Is Buffon the best player to never win the Champions League?
Had no idea. Certainly in the conversation with Zlatan and OG Ronaldo. I bet there's a bunch of others though.

Duh. Just remembered Maradona never won it.
Pele never did either.
Wonder how many CL games played by OG Ronaldo, Maradona and Pele in comparison to Buffon and Zlatan?
Pele never played in Europe.

Champions League as we know it did not start until 1992. Before that it was only the Champions Cup in which only league champs made it so significantly fewer players participated.

Minor nitty point but the defending champions of the Big Cup were invited back in to defend their title regardless, it wasn't just the league winners from each country

for current #9 players I would rank Kane, Lewondowski and Benzema a little ahead of Ruud.

And we only need more time before Haaland enters the pantheon.

This is true, but I think, and correct me if I am wrong, if a team won their league and the Cup at the same time, only that one team went in to the next cup from their country. I only mention this because of the long dynasties of the teams back then where multiple league tities werer won in a row.

look- there are a bunch of players who were really good forwards. VN fits nicely into those and tiers behind other guys like Henry that haven't even been mentioned, let alone players like skinny or fat ronaldo

I think Messi will be playing his first away game since joining Miami. Miami goes to Dallas for the round of 16 in Leagues Cup.

He has played three home games in a row.

Messi is literally the anti-Thierry Henry in MLS. He's such a supportive teammate. Just an adorable little mensch with a left foot from the Gods. If he makes the rest of the league look like the Washington Generals I'm entirely here for it.
highlights seem to show that he's enjoying himself.

but can he do it on an August night in NE.

Is that 5g 2a in 225 minutes, give or take? Just your usual 67 goals and 27 assists pace (for a 3000 minute season). At 35 years old.

Also, if my sleep-addled tally is right... It's MLS 14-7-13 Liga Mex so far in the Leagues Cup. Are the games all MLS home games?

This would be an interesting discussion actually. I wonder how the stats bear out. And while they aren't the end all of any discussion they do paint part of the picture.
And not just goals/assists. goals per min, xG, all the new fun stats to see how they compare.

I would ignore the the record, it is relatively meaningless because all games are being played in the US. The records would be much more even if there were games in Mexico.

OMG. Leeds v Barcelona, 1975 European Cup semi highlights.

Lost track of the current-era red cards. Dozens.
Wow. That was dirtier than almost every "old man" or Sunday league game I've ever seen.
This was a nice tackle I saw pop up in my x feed yesterday

oh gawd - that is worse than the Marcello tackle that earned him a red card in the Copa Libatadores yesterday (Don't look up that video if you have eaten recently)

Holy ****. That's full on assault. His teammates should have let the wolves have him. Was disappointed to see him upright at the end of the video.
#7 started swinging immediately afterward too - wow.

Anyone know anything about this guy? I hope it's fake news. I think Oscar has us on the right track.

Tite is a legend in Brazil

Field turf up here:)
I really meant to say Yankee me wankee stadium

Newcastle set to sign Tino Livramento pending medical. I’m excited because he’s young and talented but mostly because he was an absolute legend for several of my FM runs.

This quote about Arena from the Athletic today is really something....

==================================

As of Thursday morning, Arena himself had not been informed as to the nature of the allegation or allegations made against him, said multiple sources familiar with the investigation.

Messi's two goals were pretty last night. Problem is he probably should have had a red card before the 2nd one. Martinez flop to get penalty kick was pretty brutal. Every call seemed to go against Orlando.

Orlando fans calling it Rigged cup instead of Leagues cup. Wonder if the calls will be as blatant when Miami plays the teams from Mexico.

The PK call was awful. I don't know if they have VAR in this competition but that was the furthest thing from a PK on a replay.

Yes they have VAR. Ref used it to call back Orlando's late 2nd goal. Ref even winked at Miami players when he called for VAR.

They reviewed but there was definitely contact so VAR stayed silent. Super soft call for sure.

It’s so fun watching him - sure it’s against lower competition now but it’s not like he hasn’t done it against top notch competition, and he’s just dominating.

If they do Leagues Cup again, I hope they rethink the venues, and let teams from Mexico host. The diversity of teams in the round of 16 is not good so far.

Of the 11 teams confirmed to advance to the next knockout round, 10 will be MLS teams. The only Liga MX team that advanced to the round of 16 so far did so by beating another Liga MX team.

Liga MX teams could go on a run and balance things a little in the remaining round of 32 games to push some more teams through.

England's stated that they are going to be putting on a lot of extra time similar to the World Cup this year to try to quell time wasting, and well if tonight's Sheffield Wednesday's/Southampton games any indication, there is going to be a ton of extra time.
First half had 7 extra minutes, no injuries, a few cards.
Second half had 9 extra minutes, there were to stoppages for injuries and a few cards. Both were at least double what I would have expected.

And I don't have a great source for stats, but in the 9 minutes of extra time, I'm pretty sure Southampton had at least 96% possession and completed well over 100 passes.
For the game, they had 80% possession and last I checked completed 931 passes of 991 attempts.
That's pretty strong.

And for any gamblers out there, championship games are oftentimes lined at lower totals because it's a slog of a season, but the difference of the three teams dropped and the three teams promoted netted something like 150 goals gained and tbh Southampton probably has the strongest team in the league assuming they only make one more sale - I'd anticipate more goals this year by miles.

so you are a soccer fan from abroad who has moved to Minnesota. You decide to check in on the local sides transfers this summer and read this. Imagine what one would think....

Oh man. Clear new winner for "Most 'classic MLS' move":

Minnesota United acquired the right of first refusal on Liam Fraser from Toronto FC for $50k GAM...... then traded the right of first refusal on Liam Fraser to FC Dallas for $100k GAM.

it's a ponzi scheme.

Having just come from a game (one half of both newly promoted teams shipping five, myself being at Sutton) where we had +8 and +10, this is confirmed true

One of Italy's most dangerous fugitives has been caught in Corfu after a photo of him cheering on his football team gave away his whereabouts.
Vincenzo La Porta, 60, is thought to have close ties to the Camorra organised crime gang in Naples.
He has been on the run for 11 years - but earlier this year was spotted in a photo of fans celebrating in Greece.
The Naples Carabinieri police said: "What betrayed him was his passion for football and for the Napoli."
Officers said the photos were taken after Napoli won its first Italian championship in over three decades earlier this year.

Messi is like the goose that laid the golden egg.

Ares Management is investing an extra $75 million in Inter Miami CF, the Major League Soccer club that’s riding high following the arrival of superstar Lionel Messi.

Inter Miami will use the money from US-based Ares’s credit group to develop its proposed Miami Freedom Park stadium and fund other growth initiatives, according to a statement on Friday.

Details of Inter Miami’s value after the latest injection from Ares were not disclosed in Friday’s statement. Jorge Mas, the club’s managing owner, said in a July interview that its value could reach $1.5 billion within a year.

Don't know if anyone watched the Community Shield today, but Arsenal equalized in the 101st minute and then went on to win.

If this keeps up, it will dramatically impact late game tactics IMO. I'm glad the FA is trying to implement this. Expect a lot more bitching like from Pep this evening going forward.
