When Saul hits the skater in episode 1, he's giving a credit card number with a '04 expiration date. Saul doesn't get introduced in BB timeline until somewhere around 12/3/09. So you are looking at 5+ years until his introduction in BB and another 15 months before he leaves for Omaha.

So far I am pleasantly surprised. It's not OMG AMAZING but I really enjoyed the very early scenes of current day Saul, I agree with whomever above said this actor is good. The character is less schticky and has some more meat. Looking forward to seeing where it all goes.

By all means let's get back to predicting future directions of the show and shticking it up with bb references we didn't see.

 
Did you guys notice that the novella abolita was watching was the same one that Flynn referred to at the breakfast table in episode 3 of season 2

 
I expect him to pick his new name soon. He said that black people prefer a Jewish lawyer, so that is why he picked it. I'd imagine they could make this back story pretty funny.

Agree with this. I thought the first half of the first episode was tough to get into (other than the courtroom scene). Some really good scenes but I wouldn't say this show overall has been spectacular or the GOAT. Odenkirk's terrific and his lawyering his way and the doofus twins out of the desert was another terrific scenes but to this point it's been more about some really great scenes and not two great episodes for me. But it's a new show getting its legs and few shows start off being amazing (although Breaking Bad did in my opinion).

One thing I'm curious about is how Tuco ever gained a position of prominence in his group with the smooth talking guy around. Tuco's all force. The other guy looks like someone clearly to reckoned with.

 
I don't think anyone said this was the GOAT. As far as spinoffs go, I think as long as it's a good solid show, people will be happy. Nobody is expecting this to be better than BB.

It's light years better than the last spinoff Gilligan worked on, that's for sure.

Then again, that show was pretty putrid so not like the bar was set all that high.

Not only that, but when abolita comes out of the room and is standing on the steps, you can hear (barely I admit) a commercial for comet cleanser. When Saul (although he's not officially Saul yet) walks into the nail salon, you can see a container of comet wedged on the counter behind the fifth nail salon employee (counting from the door). I tell you, this Gilligan guy is genious.

Maybe the guy, just lets Tuco think he's in charge because he has the "muscle" and the connections since he knows he can easily manipulate him to do what he wants anyway. He was the one that convinced Tuco to let Jimmy go - so that he could later attempt to partner with him in the robbery of the embezzler client.

 
Watching Saul negotiate the punishment of the two kids with Tico was exactly the kind of stuff I was looking forward to seeing. That's great stuff.

 
My prediction for the 5th show is that it will be guest directed by Kurt Sutter and we will have our first SOA crossover where Saul has to defend Jackie Boy, Gemma, and Rat...

I watched the first two episodes last night. Overall I enjoyed it, but I thought the scene between Saul and Tuco (where he convinces Tuco not to kill the two skaters)- that seemed really corny and silly to me. so much so, in fact, that I'm still not sure whether or not Saul's character is going to carry this show for me. He was great as a side comic figure in BB, but he may be too much of a caricature for his own show.

So far it's keeping my interest because I loved Breakong Bad and am eager to learn the backstory here, and also the acting and direction are good. So I'll probably keep watching and I'll probably enjoy it, but if I had never seen BB, I'm not sure I would keep watching.

Tuco seems more like a Santino Corleone type while other dude is clearly a Michael type. After the visit to the nail shop/law office I wondered who was really in charge.

True. Seems like the other guy is going to die or end up in jail considering he was not in breaking bad. Maybe Tuco kills him for trying to rip off the 1.5 million behind his back?

 
I thought the first episode was better than the second.

The drama of Saul's situation won't be able to compare to what Walt went through in BB so it'll be hard to compete. Knowing the various character's future takes away from tension too. Not only did we know Saul wasn't going to be killed, we knew Tuco wasn't going to cut his finger off either. I think it'll be a solid show, fun to watch, but as much as I like Odenkirk, he's not on the level of Cranston in acting ability.

I like the Odenkirk/McKean scenes.

I thought the scene where Saul negotiated Tuco down from life to six months was the best part of the episode, but now I know. Thanks.
