So the recent murder and debates that have ensued in here got me thinking about the whole texting in theaters deal.

What do people really think about the issue. Of course, all it takes is one unstable person with a gun to escalate any minor annoyance, but I'm curious what is normal on the subject. Please answer honestly.

In the very rare instance that I go see a movie in the theater, I paid $7 to watch the film, not your cell. Just put the damn thing away for a couple of hours or step outside if it's urgent.

But how do you even see it? Are you staring at all of the people during the movie? I just find the whole premise odd.

When I go to a theater, the only thing that I notice is people talking. Silently punching a lightly glowing phone doesn't even register to my senses while the movie is playing unless, the scene was very dark and even then I'm straining to see the next bit of light from the screen.

Someone else texting in a theater is a minor annoyance, but it also shows a lack of respect for other people around you. The self-centered / egocentric world we live in is becoming the norm. Treating others with respect should be the norm, but in more and more cases it just isn't. It's pretty sad really.

Howso? Because you are trying to talk to them or is it really the light that bothers you? If it is the light, how do you even notice it?

Talking I get is distracting and have asked people to stop talking myself, but the whole anti-texting movement at movies is odd to me.

It doesn't peeve me if other people text during a movie. What would annoy me is if I noticed it over the film, because it would make me think, "Why in the heck did you pay a small fortune to come into this movie, only to half watch it and text message with people?" But in a saying "get off my lawn" to myself kind of way, not a "well these kids clearly need to be confronted immediately" way.

You probably need to clarify whether or not the phone is silenced.

I don't mind the light at all. The sound might annoy me a little (but I haven't encountered that much)

Texting isn't far off from talking if the person is right next to you/ right in front of you. At that, it's annoying. If the guy is a few rows away and all I see is some perephial light....that's not any different than the runner lights on the aisle.

I just don't get why people shell out a decent amount of money to half watch a movie.

Count me as one though that would faithfully patronize an Alamo Draft House styled theater. I'd pay more for the cinematic experience to be better.

Yes it is. You have to look away from the screen to even see it.

Are you guys going to theaters with bleacher seats or something. Does it bother you guys when someone is eating popcorn or drinking a soda?

How do you NOT notice a stray light a few rows in front of you?
Because I'm looking well over them. It would have to be a freaking flashlight to even catch my eyes enough to be even slightly annoying. Do the runner lights on the floor bother you as well?

If I'm texting in the movie theater, my phone is on silent, screen is dim, & phone in my lap.... If that bothers someone, then they are clearly deranged.

I disagree. Some people don't silence their phones....so you're hearing whatever texting noise they have....then there's the actual clicking....then....most of the time those people aren't exactly subtle in regards to their conduct while receiving texts; often commenting to their friends who are with them. Plus....there's the actual light. if it's continually moving it can be bothersome.

If someone around me is texting, yes, I notice the light and it is a minor distraction / annoyance. I didn't know there was an anti-texting movement at movies, but would like more information on it. Will there be any cookies?

That I understand. ANY sound is a different story. I'm talking about the quiet, in the lap texting. And the light usually isn't moving much, if at all.

Best thing to do to thwart annoying movie patrons?

Sit in the back....wait until whatever annoyances occur a couple of times and then yell real loud "TO KNOCK IT THE #### OFF".....

Back in the "laser pointer at the theatre" craze......nothing turned those laser pointers off faster than yelling "IF YOU DON'T SHUT THAT #######ED LASER POINTER OFF...I"M GOING TO SHOVE IT UP YOUR ###"!!!!!!

Text away during previews

Put it away during the movie...if some emergency comes up go ahead and send a text, but don't just sit and text away like some jackoff

:lmao:

"In the lap"? "Light not moving"? No one does this.

When I see people texting in a theater, they pick up the phone and hold it up in front of their face. Above shoulder level. And they usually text one-handed, which means it waves around a little bit as they type. It's impossible not to notice.

fine with others texting at any time. It doesn't bother me at all as long as its quite.

If I hear keypads clicks, swooshes, beeps, after the movie started, I'm going to be bothered.

Jayrod might want to look into getting his vision checked if he's unable to pick up light sources 30-40 degrees off center.

If I HAVE to text during a movie (rare but it has happened), I sit in the very back row. Only acceptable method short of getting up during the movie itself.

You aren't that important. Turn your phone off.

Last time I went to the movies, a grown woman 2 rows in front of me (and 5 or 6 seats over) sat there browsing Facebook for like 5 minutes right in the middle of the movie. It happened to be a dark scene and her phone light was incredibly distracting.

It was the first time I'd gone to the movies in a few years and thus incident was a great reminder why. People suck. So Damn inconsiderate

Dude, settle down. ;)

Not sure what kind of rinky dink theaters are where you live, but the majority of patrons in the theaters I frequent would be 75-90 degrees off center.Again, are you anti-textites also distracted by people eating popcorn or drinking soda? Do the runner lights on the floor bother you as well? What about the exit signs, or that pesky projector glow from the back of the theater. Maybe if a 2" x 3" screen is distracting you from the 50ft x 100ft screen, maybe you need some ADHD meds.

SQIRREL!!

You literally had to take your eyes off of the screen to see that. Maybe some of you shouldn't be driving if you can't focus your attention any better than that.

Again, are you anti-textites also distracted by people eating popcorn or drinking soda?
Actually, yes. I'd prefer to watch the movie in something close to silence. It's not a big deal, but people chomping on popcorn, slurping soda, and loudly unwrapping whatever packaged stuff they're eating always makes me wish I was watching this in my basement instead of in a theater.

Seriously. I'd be afraid to drive in a car with the guy.
It must be so hard for you guys to drive with all of those pesky other people driving by taking your focus off of the road. How can you help but not look when something moves or a light flashes in your peripheral vision. You guys may need to see a doctor if your ability to focus is so poor.

Pretty sure that's the point. Most of us can't help but notice a glowing light that suddenly pops up in front of us, and it pulls our attention away from the screen.

Your driving analogy is kind of odd. Good drivers tend notice lots of stuff in their surroundings. Tunnel vision is generally the opposite of good driving.

That's what I thought. If this is what you people feel like, you really don't need to be in public. Because other people aren't statues. Sometimes they have to actually move, or God forbid, make a noise.

So what you're saying is, you don't notice other drivers, you don't notice when things are moving, and you don't check out lights that suddenly emerge in your peripheral vision. And you consider yourself a good driver.

Not sure you're helping your case here.

:goodposting: Why pay $10 a head to be surrounded by a bunch of inconsiderate slobs like Jayrod?

Big difference between awareness and distractedness. Seems you may have a problem with the latter.

No, what I'm saying is that I don't need to divert my eyes at every single thing in my peripheral. Its called focus and apparently some of you can't do it.

$12 here. Turn it off or leave the theater, it's pretty simple.

:wall: Why in the hell are you "watching" someones cell? Again it takes personal effort to actually take your eyes off of the screen and place your focus on the phone. How do you people know if they are texting or surfing facebook? Oh thats right, because you are looking directly at it instead of the screen.

The point is that going to the movies is supposed to be an enjoyable experience for everyone. When you walk into a theater, you enter into a social contract with everyone else there. The terms are pretty simple...you keep as quiet as reasonably possible and you refrain from behavior that might lower the enjoyment of others.

Some distractions can't be avoided. People sneeze. People go to the bathroom. Candy bags make noise. Reasonable people understand that. But when you decide to turn on your phone to have some inane conversation with a buddy, you are being a jerk.

It's not a matter of being easily distracted. It's a matter of common decency and respecting others

But how do you know if someones conversation is inane? And i'm still baffled at how a tiny light some 70 degrees off the screen is so distracting. I'm all for silencing cell phones, but this whole anti-texting move I find odd.

Again, are you anti-textites also distracted by people eating popcorn or drinking soda?

The movie theater makes money selling popcorn and soda, so they would never make a policy that you can't eat and drink while watching the movie. Even though it's distracting, people who go to the movies have to be willing to accept that annoyance.

Your cell phone use is banned by pretty much every movie theater's policy. It's not popcorn. It's not soda. It's your cell phone.

Unfortunately people like you ignore the policy because the last thing a teenaged kid making minimum wage wants to do while working is police people for cell phone use. So despite the cell phone ban policy, self entitled testing bastards like you have made attending movies far more annoying than what popcorn eating and soda drinking noise produces. Thanks a lot, Skippy!
