Honest question.. If you think Matthews call was :bs: , then you also agree the call on Kendricks earlier in the game was also :bs: .. right??

Flags.  And I'm not kidding or trying to be funny.  Why not?  If they are hell bent on "protecting" QBs then take the sack out of all together and you pull a flag and they are down - Or two hand touch - your choice.

That's not the goal the league is trying to accomplish with this rule.  It is just to protect QBs.

Not all QBs.  You probably can tackle Cam and Tyrod with impunity.  It the stars like Rodgers, Brady that the rules get changed for.

One you said he left his feet, and two you said he drove him into the ground and you're completely wrong on all accounts.

You’re misreading the rule. The point of the rule is that, once the ball is released, the defender gets one step before contact. He has to make contact before the second step hits the ground.  It’s a good rule, and makes sense. In this case, the contact was essentially simultaneous with the release of the ball. It’s a bad call.

Here's the problem... you quoted part A when you should have quoted B (or A and B)

A rushing defender is prohibited from committing such intimidating and punishing acts as “stuffing” a passer into the ground or unnecessarily wrestling or driving him down after the passer has thrown the ball, even if the rusher makes his initial contact with the passer within the one-step limitation provided for in (a) above. When tackling a passer who is in a defenseless posture (e.g., during or just after throwing a pass), a defensive player must not unnecessarily or violently throw him down or land on top of him with all or most of the defender’s weight. Instead, the defensive player must strive to wrap up the passer with the defensive player’s arms and not land on the passer with all or most of his body weight.

The pictures I posted clearly show he didn't leave his feet, and he didn't drive him into the ground, it was an arm tackle and he hit him simultaneously as he threw the ball.

There really is no argument that it was a good call, because it wasn't.

It is a :bs: rule, but as Andy posted above, Clay landed on Kirk with most, or all of his weight.

Therefore, based on the joke rule, it was, by the book,  a "good call" ..

As I said before, the NFL now expects defenders to perform a magically feat of twisting off the QB, while in Mid-air, so as to not land on him to finish the tackle.

Dude. It's what happened after that that's the problem. And I already acquiesced to the fact he didn't leave his feet.

It's awesome that after a near calendar year or Packer nation griping about the Barr hit have it not go their way when the NFL tries to fix it.

I've watched it at least ten times, slow mo, back and forth and he just never landed on him with all of his weight, didn't drive him into the ground either, in fact Matthews had one knee on the ground when they both hit the ground.

Look, I'm not blaming the refs for the loss, never have and never will. The rule is BS for sure, but this was not called my the letter of the rule. It just wasn't. You can clearly see it was an arm tackle and he landed partially on him. Corrente said in that report above that Matthews "Drove him into the ground" which is completely false.

You're just being obtuse.

Corrente said he called the penalty because Matthews lifted him up and drove him into the ground. The video shows otherwise.

Don't know what else to say, but you guys are the ones that keep bringing up the Barr hit which was totally opposite what this hit was.

It's pretty clear on video that why Corrente said he called the penalty did not in fact happen.

No reason to keep this going as the video shows what happened.

A lot flags in week 1 for just pushing the QB.  Amazing that QBs survived in this league prior to 2018 (sarcasm)

It seems the referee, Tony Corrente, agrees with you. He stated the call had nothing to do with the new rules, but that the hit was penalized because, "when he hit the quarterback, he lifted him and drove him into the ground."

Just saw the Matthews play.  Brutal call.  Embarrassing for the league.  

Packers got robbed.  Arm tackle right when he is throwing the ball.

This game is all on McCarthy's shoulders and the fact the Packers didn't lose will keep his name out of the headlines. At 9:12 in the video the Packers are winning 26-21 with 1st down after the INT. Go for the TD on 1st because the two minute warning is going to happen. Take a shot at the endzone. 2nd down had to be a pass because Minnesota did not use their timeout... stupid play call. 3rd down was a pass, again, no timeout needed... stupid play call. Then on 4th the Packers kick the FG.

Minnesota gets the ball with both timeouts when they should have been used but for crappy play calling. McCarthy needs to go. What a waste of a coach.

I actually thought the call was ridiculous, too, when I saw it live.  But with the reverse view of the one posted a bunch here, it seems like more reasonable an explanation.

From that view, it looks like Matthews is lifting Cousins' right leg with his left arm while driving his own right shoulder into Cousins' going to the ground.

Opportunities missed.  Refereeing controversy.  Field goals missed.  Big picture, Aaron Rodgers seems to have emerged from the game with no injury setback. I'm good, if unsatisfied.

Clay Matthews, you need to start returning your paychecks buddy.

Calls missed on both sides. They missed a down by contact call that would have killed a drive for Minnesota earlier among the many many bad/missed calls.

It was bad there...but sometimes I also don't know how much is MM, and how much is Rodgers at the line being able to change looks and things.  Neither will really say...and I definitely trust Rodgers to make those calls.  May have been more of shorter passes called.

Why I will defend...is in the past...they run run run kick the FG and people throw a fit that he is too conservative.  Now they do the opposite and people still complain.

Meh...Clay played a pretty good game.  Defnitely far better than last.

:goodposting:  I was ready to shut the TV off after the interception, but left it on just because.  I don't understand the playcalling at all.  Green Bay had been running the ball fairly well, all they had to do was pick up a first down and they possibly could have run the clock out or at least left Minnesota with no time outs.  Even as a Vikings fan, it should have never come down the the Matthews hit (bad call, but so was the one on Kendricks IMO) or overtime.

Mr. Pack is right. The ‘more than one step’ deals with pre-impact. So that isn’t it. 

But - on the reverse angle (viewed from behind) Matthews did lift Cousins leg and then lower his shoulder thereby very minimally ‘driving’ the player to the ground and yes, he did land on him with his weight. 

This should NOT have been called imo although it’s not a blatantly bad call. 

Also - the rule (or the current emphasis) sucks.

My only gripe is why run on 1st down when there was only 5 seconds until the 2 min warning.  Should’ve passed there run on 2nd and take your shot on 3rd down.

i don’t mind the play calling otherwise.  They came within inches of getting a TD and icing the game.  Had they ran 3 straight times and the game ended up like it did Pack fans would be screaming about MM being too conservative.  

Put the ball in your best players hands.  I’m cool with that.

He wasn’t late though. He prevented Cousins from following through causing him to underthrow it.  Clay did absolutely nothing wrong just like Hendricks did absolutely nothing wrong in the first half.  Seriously just put flags on the QBs and get it over with.

Also then Clay risks grazing Cousins  helmet thus drawing a penalty that was.
