***Official*** Washington Redskins 2014 Offseason Thread (1 Viewer)

The Washington Redskins reached agreement with a trio of free agents Tuesday, garnering deals with former Cleveland Browns guard Shawn Lauvao, former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Andre Roberts and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Adam Hayward, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The Redskins also re-signed wide receiver Santana Moss to a one-year deal.

Lauvao agreed to a four-year deal worth $17 million, and Roberts' deal is worth $16 million over four years, sources say.

Lauvao, 26, spent his first four seasons with Browns, starting 44 of 53 games. Roberts, who turned 26 in January, was third on the Cardinals with 471 yards on 43 receptions.

Coming off a career year in 2012, Roberts' role was reduced in 2013 under first-year coach Bruce Arians. Roberts was named the third receiver, behind Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd. He had a season high 97 yards on eight catches in Week 1 against St. Louis.

Moss, 34, will return to the Redskins for a 10th season. He had a down season in 2013, catching 42 passes for 452 yards and two touchdowns.

Hayward, 29, had 25 tackles with Tampa Bay last season
.

Moss is insurance in case he works out better than another slot receiver. Hayward is supposedly a good special teamer. Lauvao is a starting guard.

Lauvao

Impact: It’ll be interesting to see what the Redskins now do with Chester -- if they do put Lauvao at right guard. Chester would count $4.3 million against the salary cap this season; if released the Redskins would free up $2.7 million in cap space. I also wonder what this means for the rest of the interior, starting with left guard Kory Lichtensteiger. There’s a chance he could move to center, something that's been mentioned a couple times over the past few years. But starting center Will Montgomery would free up another $1.93 million of cap space if released, which is why the Lichtensteiger move could happen sooner rather than later. That would then put one of the young guards, either Josh LeRibeus or Adam Gettis, at left guard (unless they opt to put Lauvao there and keep Chester). LeRibeus would add more size and, as a former third-round pick, he should be ready to play entering Year 3.
"LeRibeus would add more size" :lmao:

He reported to OTA's 40 pounds overweight last year and spent the whole preseason trying to get in shape.

Where have all the safeties gone?

Long yards passing.

Where have all the safeties gone?

Long bombs again.

Where have all the safeties gone?

Gone to others, every one.

When will we ever learn?

When will we ever learn?

The Redskins will entertain defensive end Antonio Smith and corner Corey Graham, both of whom can fill specific needs. Smith told the Houston Chronicle that he’ll also visit Tennessee, St. Louis and Oakland. He also said, “My heart’s with [the Texans], but they haven’t made me an offer, so I’m going to take these visits,” Smith said.

Smith would fill a pass-rushing void among the defensive linemen. He’s listed at 6-foot-4, 289 pounds -- a little small for a typical 3-4 end (Stephen Bowen and Jarvis Jenkins both weigh around 315 pounds). But Smith started every game but one in his six-year Texans career (in addition to missing one game after being suspended for swinging his helmet at Richie Incognito).

Smith has played in both a 3-4 and 4-3 front and would be an excellent pass-rusher in a nickel package for the Redskins. He has 41.5 career sacks, but 18 in the past three years.

The Redskins need someone who can apply pressure from the defensive front, easing the burden on linebackers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan.

Graham is an excellent special teams player -- he was a Pro Bowler in 2011. Graham was Baltimore’s nickelback this past season. In the 2012 playoffs, he intercepted Denver quarterback Peyton Manning twice.

Graham, who has good size at 6-foot, 196 pounds, played five seasons for Chicago before signing with Baltimore in 2012. He’s made 23 career starts.

Adam Hayward

3 years, $3 million

Quick analysis: Hayward is considered a good leader and solid special teams player, both of which the Redskins needed. He spent seven seasons in Tampa Bay, starting 13 games. He’s 6-foot-1, 240 pounds and runs well. His best time in the 40-yard dash in 2007 (when he was coming out of Portland State) was 4.46 seconds. Having big players who can run is an absolute must on special teams; it’s also one of the reasons Lorenzo Alexander was so good in this area. He’s also considered a good locker room guy. Obviously the Redskins know him well, with Raheem Morris and Bruce Allen both having worked with him in Tampa Bay. You typically do better in free agency when you have a history with a player.

Impact: The Redskins needed to add inside linebackers, but considering Hayward is more of a special teams standout it’s hard to imagine their work here is done. They had been linked to Joe Mays as well; he’s another special teams standout. Tough to see how this bumps anyone off the roster considering they lacked depth. I do wonder what this means for Bryan Kehl, who was supposed to play a similar role. But Hayward, from what I gather, has been a better special teams player. If Keenan Robinson is healthy and Brandon Jenkins becomes better in this area, it would give the Redskins three big players on special teams who can run. They did not have that last season
.

Andre Roberts

Quick analysis: Roberts is considered a solid receiver and someone who had a better year in 2012 than in ’13, when he was Arizona’s third receiver. He could line up in the slot or outside. He did both with the Cardinals this past season and he worked well with Larry Fitzgerald. Roberts caught 182 passes -- 11 for touchdowns -- in four seasons with Arizona. Roberts caught 64 passes for 759 yards and five touchdowns in 2012, but those numbers dropped to 43 receptions for 471 yards and two scores this past season. Roberts showed consistent hands, making tough catches, so he has -- as the coaches say -- a wide catch radius. He worked well getting separation at the top of his breaks with a little gentle push. But I saw him make several catches that required good focus knowing he’d get hit -- whether over the middle or along the sidelines. He wasn’t flashy. But he is fast, though the bulk of his work came underneath or on intermediate routes. His career average per catch (11.7) reflects his slot duty status.

Impact: Well, I would have said it meant the end for veteran receiver Santana Moss, but he’ll be back (though I still don’t think it’s a guarantee that he’ll be on the roster this season). Roberts gives them someone who can play inside or outside and has a little more size at 5-foot-11. If Moss can’t play, then Roberts can easily play the slot in a three-receiver set. This gives them some insurance if Leonard Hankerson takes a while to recover from his torn ACL. Roberts has returned punts and kickoffs, but that was not a strength as he averaged just 5.9 yards on 46 punt returns and 22.4 yards on 16 kick returns. So I don’t think anything is necessarily solved here.
I don't know why they'd still be counting on Hankerson.

Shawn Lauvao

Quick analysis: He started 44 games in four seasons with Cleveland, mostly at right guard but he has played on the left side, after being drafted in the third round of the 2010 draft. He did play a variety of positions, including left guard, in college. Lauvao was not popular among Browns fans because he remains unproven, but the coaches did want him back, according to a Browns source. He's viewed as a good fit in an outside zone because of his ability to move. At 315 pounds, he has good size. But current right guard starter, Chris Chester, is only six pounds lighter.

They are cursed at safety. I'm worried that they'll draft one, and when he walks out for his introductory press conference an anvil will drop on his head or something.

im not an orakpo guy and dont think he offers the outside rush we need. id like to see us add a big guy @ DE who can hold bodies on the oline, that would help compliment orakpo. assuming we are committing to orakpo for the nxt couple yrs..

why cant phillip thomas be a guy for us on the back end?

i thought he was more of an SS vs a FS post draft, but he could be part of the solution on the back end still, right?

Yes, I don't think they are closing the book on Thomas yet. This is the same defensive staff that drafted him, so he's in the mix I assume. Rambo might be a lost cause. Can't tackle or take the right angles to save his life.

Yeah, Thomas is as unknown as when he was drafted (except he has 1 injury under his belt). He's basically a rookie who was fairly well thought of. No way to get any indication of how he'll pan out, unlike Amerson who I think will continue to improve and will do well.

Rambo --- I think we pretty much know he's not good already.

Like the 3 signings so far. Hopefully we can lock up Corey Graham today when he comes to visit.

Bummed that we couldn't land Mitchell or Byrd, but all is not lost.

Antonio Smith would be a nice addition too, but it sounds like he wants to go back to Houston if they make him a decent offer.

Still need some secondary help, another OL, another ILB and some DL help. Don't think that's asking too much.

Still need a speed WR to stretch the field. Does Aldrick Robinson progress into a guy who can run more than one route and provide that consistent deep threat?

Think we'll use the draft to find another WR. WR is pretty deep this year so we should be able to find 1 or 2 that can help.

The Redskins seem to be targeting players who are good on special teams. Nice to see that (finally) is being treated as a legitimate team need instead of "Who do we have? Throw them out there. What could go wrong?" They missed on this one though.

The Eagles beat out the Redskins for the services of Seattle LB Chris Maragos, an elite special teams performer

They better sign Captain Munnerlynn. Coolest name in the league right now; plus, he can play and he's young.

Starks looks like he's going back to Miami. The Skins were interested in him at DT.

Someone on twitter has spotted the conspiracy already:

#redskins fans: If you haven't figured out that Bruce Allen is setting up Jim Haslett for failure yet, you're ain't getting it.
Yeah that's gotta be what it is. Let's retain him only to not give him any players so we can just fire him. Some people are just idiots.

Speculation.

Defense. Good chance hall is moving to FS. Another 2 cb come in on budget figures ... Rogers + 1 more. Add a de. Get lbs in draft.

Offense Beefing up the line. Probably 1 more name wr signing So you get griffin, Morris, garçon, Roberts, and maybe nicks, then reed at the skill positions.

Still need lots of depth added for special team play.

Redskins taking 3-13 record to Free Agency and losing there too...in-season climate carries over to off-season...used to losing now.

Maybe 'Skins will allow walk on's to try out for safety? I'm starting doing some push ups and sit ups now to get in better shape...hey, I could do it because I surely can miss on tackles and blow coverage like the best of them, I'll fit right in.

How are they losing in FA? We're not even 24hrs in
With all the holes we have, especially at safety...all top target safeties are GONE. Who's going to play safety? Point of weakness last year and none on roster and we are signing 29-30 year old special teamers instead...I call that losing when we have as many holes as we have. Not saying break the bank on one player, but at some point you have to make a move to fill your holes and we have plenty. At this point, RAK better play more than just OLB...

Oh and the Guard, grades out as a good pass blocker and terrible run blocker, I can see why it was important to jump on him in the first hour of FA.

Typical bitter fans (Every team has them) who think they know something and are just commenting when they have no understanding that FA is a process and overpaying isn't always the answer. Roberts was a good signing. Bringing up Moss and Hankerson when they signed him makes no sense with a deep draft at WR ahead of them. Garcon, Reed, Roberts, the rookie they draft after that no one is relevant.

Any team would be blessed to have your supportive attitude as a fan. Your name is RG3 Hater and he is your teams QB, why be a fan of this team if you have nothing but negativity to say?

There's still help out there at safety: http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/45947/309/2014-nfl-free-agents?pg=2

So because we signed someone early that you don't think they should've signed early, we're losing? Who cares when we sign someone, all I want to know is does the person we signed fill a need. So far, everyone we've signed fills a need.

Hall, Orakpo, Riley, Baker, Moss, Roberts, Louvao and the ST guy from Tampa all fill needs this team has. We weren't going to fix the entire roster the first 18 hours of FA.

Do you think you are going to get any positivity or reason about a teams signing from a guy whose handle is named after hating your franchise QB? Seeing that negativity from a fan of the team is off putting. Redskins have made some good signings and are attempting to make their team better. They can make their fanbase better by getting rid of negativity like RG3 Hater.

It appears you know absolutely nothing in regards to the lack of talent at a position that was deemed critical for the Redskins last year. You clearly did not watch Bacari Rambo play, if you had you would see the need and realize that sitting back and fishing for bargain basement is not was is needed.

FYI - YOU ARE AN IDIOT too as HTTR is HAIL TO THE REDSKINS, it's in my signature...go sell crazy elsewhere, we're all stocked up here.

Instead? The guys they signed yesterday is not what the reason they didn't sign a S.

By PFF? I honestly have no idea how much stock to put in them. They admit to not caring about things like technique (i.e., doing things properly), so I'm not sure how great their evaluations are.

Also, it wasn't really the "first hour". All teams had a few days to negotiate and talk to players. They just couldn't actually sign anyone until yesterday after 4 PM. And I really don't think it's a sign that the Redskins think this guy is more important than someone like Byrd or Mitchell.

Of course, I think we all share your concern about the S position. If they had to take the field today, they'd give up about 5 long TD passes in the first half. Luckily, they don't have to take the field today. They have time to add some solid players. They won't be All Pros, but they can still be an improvement.

Safety is defintiely a big need for the team, but there are still guys out there. It's not a lost cause yet. Maybe Hall moves over to safety this year and we sign another CB or 2? I'm not worried yet.

Agree with bolded for sure. Problem is we are not prestigious anymore as a franchise, we have had losing season over n over...so we have to over pay to get talent because there is no lure to coming to Redskins. We don't have the luxury to sit back, like the top franchises and ESPECIALLY not when we are 3-13 with horrible defense that is missing as many part as we have. Front office seems reactionary opposed to being aggressive from the looks of it.

Yep and the Redskins have a great record for picking the right talent...not. Maybe we get lucky, at least I hope, but history shows otherwise. Oh and we have no first rounder...drafting and building talent within is not one of our strong suits and been that way for some time...unfortunately.
