The timing of when this will happen is starting to look impossible for me. So there is a good chance I can't do it this time around.
Same here. I'll be on vacation June 24-July 1 which will almost certainly fall in the draft window.I'd like to keep my string of playing in every WIS intact. Maybe I could take on a partner.
Almost sounds like we should put it off a few weeks. This is prime vacation season.

I second this. Maybe this will give us time to re-examine the rookie season concept. Seems like too much research for a lot of us to handle.

Fair enough. I just find it refreshing and potentially insightful. A chance to get us away from "sim fishing", "spreadsheet hunting", and all the other :nerd: things that have brought interest down in the past few editions. I understand if not everyone feels that way. Only thing I ask for is that it be something more creative than "2005-2009" and not "dice roll for twelve seasons, use the best 8, multiply by 2, and then you get the 3rd season." ;)

The thing with the 05-09 season is the fact that we haven't done a modern sim yet.

If we want to make it challenging, we could do something like one player per team along with it.

I kind of agree with RnR about already having lived that era. My only real interest in a modern sim would be the speculative sim Eephus described. We will do that at some point, but probably not this time. Maybe pre-2011.

Sorry for dropping out of the thread I started. My mom died two weeks ago and pretend baseball slipped down my priorities list.We could always do another split era league. I believe we did this before with modern batters and deadball pitchers, although we may just have talked about it. 05-09 pitching staffs with high HR/9 numbers and modern bullpens might be interesting to combine with batters from the deadball era or 1920-41.

bobboucarow (sp?) dropped, so Dr. D's spot is still in.

Keep in mind, we're not lighting this candle for a while because of prime vacation time.

How about 2000-2009 pitching staffs with 1920-1929 hitters?

We only need five years of pitching season due to expansion. Depending on whether we have a 16, 20 or 24 team league, we may need to open the 20s era up by a couple of years in order to have a deep enough pool.

Fair enough. I just find [the rookie-season concept] refreshing and potentially insightful. A chance to get us away from "sim fishing", "spreadsheet hunting", and all the other :goodposting: things that have brought interest down in the past few editions.
"Sim fishing" and "spreadsheet hunting" aren't going anywhere, especially not in a rookie-season draft. We'll still pull lists from WIS.com, make spreadsheets, and see just what the best rookie seasons really are. Kills a lot of the well-known cookies, though. There's no concievable non-random format that eliminates sim-fishing and spreadsheet use.

I think taking away an easy searchable "era" where in the click of a mouse you have + numbers, log numbers, and everything else you'll ever need will change the dynamic. I don't doubt the :X power of some of you to run through tireless hours of assembling the best rookie seasons into a spreadsheet. I'm sure that will happen. If that's your prerogative, more power to you. No matter what the research method used to figure out which rookies are best, I'm 100% sure that all of us will learn something new and I'm also 100% sure this draft won't be "cookie cutter" because everyone is using the same spreadsheet.

My concern for doing something that requires oodles of research to do is this: Does anyone have the stomach for that anymore?

Maybe if we all had the drive we had back in WIS I, maybe so. But it seems as each WIS goes on, it seems like interest dwindles and dwindles. I mean, we barely got 20 people interested in this go-around.

I can understand avoiding a recent era for the lack of being able to learn anything. That's why we try to find some era that we haven't tackled yet (have we done 1910's yet in any sims?) or making some combo (I suggested an All-Coors Deadball league in the last sim).

One thing that I don't think we've done is a sim that centered around one stadium or one particular park factor.

Lets just have 2 themes. We can have the rookies in AL and the 05-09 in the NL. We will prob need a salary cap though. And add that no rookie seasons can be drafted of players that played from 2005-2009

from last season, my League of Champions finally made it to all 32 teams. I'm the #7 seed, fwiw. Starts tomorrow.
first, i thought being a 7 seed was a good thing in a 32-team league. But it means i'm one of 4 such 7 seeds, in 4 brackets seeded 1-8.My first round opponent has:

Babe Ruth 1921

Lou Gehrig 1927

Mickey Mantle 1957

Joe Dimaggio 1941

Alex Rodriguez 2007

Derek Jeter 2005

Tony Lazerri 1929

Bill Dickey 1937

Paul O'Neill 1994

His pitching has:

Jack Chesbro 1904

Russ Ford 1910

Ron Guidry 1978

Mo Rivera 1996

among others
i lost in the first round 3-2 to this team. He went on to win the championship.

While those of us who can't afford vacations sit around and wait for those that do, Doug B triggered something in my mind when he said the words "critical mass".

What if we tried an auction with one of these drafts? We'd either need to do it live ( :X ) or do it slow (which means Eephus might be dead by the time it's over).

I'm not suggesting it as a serious option here, just a hypothetical.

Only way something like that works is if Nipsey returns.

Getting a slow auction site could double the cost of entry. Running a message board auction for 600 players would be a fiasco on the level of BP. It could probably only work with a very limited era player pool because auctions only work well where scarcity is a factor.Summer is a bad time to run a draft. There are currently no drafts active on page one of the FFA.

Are there a bunch of potential drafters going on vacations between July 4th and Labor Day? Was thinking that July 6th through mid-August would be a good time to get this thing fired up. Try to get it in before fantasy football preparation/drafting starts in earnest.

Sounds like a well reasoned approach. Im in.

Advance 2010 sim. I thrown this idea out before. We'd basically be drafting players on spec and would replay the season in Oct-Nov after WIS posts the 2010 stats. We'd have to allow a mulligan or two to allow for injuries but I think this would add a lot of variability to the usual nerd.gif fish2.gif
We're going to do this for 2011. No idea about the overall future of WIS leagues here, but we gotta do this once.

Pretty sure the interest is still there. Maybe wait till we get out of the dog days of the baseball season. Most guys will catch the itch in October if I were guessing.

Personally, I think this should be a winter tradition and nothing more. That's the time when we start aching for baseball, no one's going anywhere on trips, and it's too cold and/or snowy out to go out and do anything besides stay indoors and play on the internets.

Is it safe?
It may be, but it's going to take a mass PM to bring everyone back over here.I'd say if we can settle on a theme, a commish, and a start date (early October)... a quick PM to all the people that signed up should get this thing rolling.

So, what are we doing here?
The way I see it, we've got two options:1. Rookies only (re-read the thread for more info)2. A simple short-era draft just to get things rolling againEveryone who wants to play, state your preference and we can get moving.I'm voting for rookies, though I could go either way.
