OFFICIAL WIS XVIII THREAD: An Ode to Claude Hendrix (2 Viewers)

So what is the reason guys who are good to great players suck in the SIM.
Combination of overhype and the era they played in. For instance, pitchers in 1968 will get bad normalization stats because pitching was so abnormally good.
And, in some cases, overhype of the overhype. For example, in 1968 there are a couple pitchers that are just so good, they still generally perform well but get a bad rep in the sim.

Also, it's a game of probability. You will have a season that will be a guys worst one out of a hundred times - that's a darn low percentage, but you play in enough of these, you are going to have a players worst - and best - seasons from a probability standpoint.

Kiki Cuyler, OF
One of my all time fav players. When I was in Jr. High School, I had a PC baseball game that used real time historic players. Back then, it was batting average, HRs and RBI's that seemed to affect the "engine" the most, but the cool thing is that while it utilized real historic players, you still could manually pitch and swing and field. It also used the real historic ballparks, primitive graphics and all, and compiled season stats. Loved the baker bowl.

As basic as the game was, especially graphics (we are talking 1987-88, maybe '89), it is still one of the most fun and best interfaced games I've ever played. It gave you the ability to "control" a curve, the swing, etc long before the game consoles did it seems.

Anyhoo - Kiki, with one year with a huge average, was in the game and rocked.
my fav old school pc baseball game was earl weaver baseball
That might have been it, Im looking at screen shots - maybe it was 2, not the first one, don't remember. But I know you had all the historic players and some historic parks.

I'm guessing this is why I got McNally.

Played the old green screen Strat-o-matic baseball with my dad a lot when I was growing up. That was a lot of fun.

The world headquarters of SoM are in essentially my hometown. Technically one town over, same school district. My friends would line up the day new lineups would be released long before any computer sim.

This is how we party on Saturday night.
Im trying to get a dingleberry off my new kitten. Wife brought home a 5 week old stray a few days ago, she somehow survived the freezing cold.

Adorable, other than this stupid dingleberry. Reading cat boards about dingleberry removal is not what I had planned for Saturday.

I wanted to trade up to get the SOMFD, but also to post this.

10.23 (from moops)- SS Sherry Magee, 1910s

That's right. Shortstop. C/B- defense at SS in 1914, to go along with some pretty solid normalized stats for a SS at this point of the draft.

"Oh Sherry..."

Normalized stats

1. CF L Benny Kauff - .369/.448/.549 (707 PAs)

2. LF R Joe Kelley - .365/.475/.575 (784 PAs)

3. RF R Sammy Sosa - .328/.439/.719 (711 PAs)

4. 1B R Mark McGwire - .299/.469/.741 (681 PAs)

5. 3B L Eddie Mathews - .300/.402/.613 (717 PAs)

6. C R Carlton Fisk - .306/.383/.559 (538 PAs)

7. SS R Sherry Magee- .321/.386/.535 (648 PAs)

8.

1. RHP Don Sutton - 285 IP, 2.21 ERA, .196 OAV, 0.95 WHIP, 5.97 K/9, 2.09 BB/9

2. LHP Dave McNally - 273 IP, 2.23 ERA, .198 OAV, 0.92 WHIP, 5.65 K/9, 1.89 BB/9

3. RHP Joe McGinnity - 427 IP, 1.94 ERA, .215 OAV, 1.03 WHIP, 3.48 K/9, 2.13 BB/9

4.

Closer: RHP JJ Putz - 71 IP, 1.24 ERA, .149 OAV, 0.68 WHIP, 7.27 K/9, 1.61 BB/9

Possible lineup as of now, normalized:

1. CF .350 .441 .429 B / A+ Richie Ashburn, 1958 (likely, could use 55, a lil more offense but not worth the loss in range prob and steals)

2. CA .333 .421 .522 A-A/D Jorge Posada, 2007

3. RF .377 .448 .702 B / C. Stan Musial, 1948

4. 1B .321 .433 .623 B / C- **** Allen, 1972 (could just as easily play third base, but I'm intrigued by the normalization for '72)

5. LF .372 .413 .646 C / D+ Sam Thompson, 1895

6. SS .290 .378 .541 B / C+ Vern Stephens, 1948

7.

8.

Pitching, not normalized just lazy:

SP1 1908 342 1.16 .197 0.81 3.60 0.83 0.06 130-30 Addie Joss R
SP2 1996 233 1.89 .220 0.94 6.14 1.27 0.31 159-33 Kevin Brown R
SP3 1985 240 2.03 .206 1.03 5.90 2.55 0.30 157-68 Orel Hershiser R

CL1 1918 053 1.35 .183 0.73 0.90 0.68 0.00 004-03 Jake Northrop R
Still a lot in the air as only the 40's are blocked out so far and I can swing Allen 1B / 3B

yesHow do you figure out Normalized stats. Maybe I'll take a shot at it
When you click on a player, it will bring up a pop up window with all their stats, not just the ones in the draft center. Above the stats are three links - to the left is a link for advanced stats which have normalized stats, marked by # signs. (you can also search in the draft center for the # stats)
