***Official World Champion SF Giants 2011 Thread (1 Viewer)

They have Belt practicing RF. About freakin time. Huff looks lost out there. Anyone know why Belt didnt start in OF and let Huff stay at 1B rather than move Huff to OF?Nice to see Wilson get his first save of the year by striking out the side.FYI the preview for the Showtime reality show about the Giants airs tonight at 9:30 ET on Showtime. I'm curious to see how crazy Wilson really is.http://sports.sho.com/#/baseball/videos/501
Belt needs to hit. I've seen some good looking ABs but ultimately he'll be judged on results, rather than style points. He's primarily been a 1B in the minors so I think moving the more experienced player when Ross was hurt is a defensible move. Backing the organization on everything is getting pretty tiresome. I really miss ripping Brian Sabean. What's the statute of limitations on a World Championship?I don't think Wilson is as crazy as he acts. A lot of it is calculated (but sometimes very funny) schtick.
I'd say Sabean gets trust until proven otherwise. That is to say throughout this year.I never thought Brian Wilson was crazy. He's like Ocho. A bit of a goof but it's all deliberate.

So, is there some issue between Lincecum and Uribe?
Highly doubt it. Cant say about the first hit but the 2nd hit looked like it got away from Linc and that would hardly be the best situation to plunk Uribe. Loading the bases in a 1 run game and forcing Bochy to go to the bullpen. Yeah i dont think that was Timmy's intention.

Barry Zito left Saturday's game in the 2nd with what's being described as a mid-foot sprain. If he has to miss a start, the likely candidate to replace him is Ryan Vogelsong who came up in the Giants organization last century before leaving in the Jason Schmidt trade. I wouldn't run to the waiver wire to pick him up.

400 year old Guillermo Mota gutted out 4 1/3 IP which has to be one of his longest outings ever. Mota has made 671 appearances since coming up with the Expos in 1999, all in relief.

Hey homers, I'm heading to out to Sunnyvale for work and am flying into SFO since it's cheaper. I have some time to catch the Oakland game on 5/22. I realize the timing isn't the best for a crosstown rival game, but there's not much available for tickets. Are there better avenues to go through other than the Giants website?

Stubhub and Craigslist. A single ticket shouldn't be hard to come by.

Actually looking for 2 since I'm traveling with my boss, and all that are available are nosebleeds or the Field Club. I kinda figured CL/Stubhub would be the route we would have to take...thanks.

Double-A Akron lefty Scott Barnes is off to a good start, allowing two runs in his first 11 innings (1.64 ERA) over two starts, with a 17/2 K/BB and just five hits allowed. His second start on April 14th was particularly strong: 10 strikeouts and just two hits with zero runs in seven innings. The Cleveland Indians prospect posted a 5.22 ERA with a 127/58 K/BB in 138 innings for Akron last year, but his ERA was deceptive and he pitched well in the Arizona Fall League. He has a 90 MPH fastball, and his curve, slider, and changeup are all pretty solid. A deceptive delivery adds to the package and he's been durable so far as a pro. An eighth round pick in '08 out of St. John's by the Giants, he was traded to the Indians in 2009 for Ryan Garko.
Ryan Garko - now playing 1B for your Samsung Lions of the Korean League

Belt optioned to Fresno with Cody Ross coming back.

Watching him this year he seems so close to breaking out. Oh well, hope this doesn't have a long term effect on him.

Go Braves!

Tim vs Tim, winner = Hudson!

Its going to be a good season, I hope we see SF in the playoffs again... so we can crush them!

My honeymoon with Brian Sabean is still in effect but when it comes time to take the gloves off, the words Miguel and Tejada will be tattooed across my knuckles

Pablo Sandoval is expected to have surgery in Arizona on Tuesday to remove a fractured portion of the hamate bone in his right wrist, an injury that usually keeps a player out for four to six weeks.Sandoval believes he hurt himself during a slide, but head trainer Dave Groeschner believes he did it swinging the bat. The hamate usually takes the brunt of a swing because that is where players rest the knobs of their bats.Third baseman Ryan Rohlinger will be recalled from Triple-A Fresno, but manager Bruce Bochy said he is going to look at a regular pairing of Miguel Tejada at third base and Mike Fontenot at short, as it is for today's game against Washington. Bochy will consider Emmanuel Burriss at shortstop for some games.
Not good at all

Yesterday's lineup with Rowand-Tejada-Fontenot in the 1-2-3 slots has to be one of the sorriest top of the orders in the 128 year history of the franchise

From Posnanski's SI blog:

There’s a famous story about Willie Mays scoring from third on an infield fly ball. It was while looking for the story that I came across a curious play-by-play from a game in 1967. The game happened on a Tuesday at the end of August, and it featured a Giants team that was 11 games back in the standings and a Dodgers team that was more than 20 games behind. The game was, in that way, the very definition of a baseball dog day. Willie Mays was 36 years old then. He was already a legend, already viewed as the best all-around player to ever play baseball. And he was in the middle of what was, by quite a lot, the worst year of his career to that point. The play-by-play reads like this.Bottom of the 5th. Giants leading Dodgers 4-1.– Willie Mays walk– Jack Hiatt single to RF (Mays scores)That’s it. That’s the whole masterpiece. Mays walks. Mays scores on follow-up single. What? How? Here’s the most amazing part of all: Mays had by 1967 done these sorts of minor-miracles so many times, that the witnesses did not even feel the need to explain it anymore. There was an Associated Press photograph that appeared in papers the next day of Mays sliding under Jeff Torborg’s glove on the play. But even the cutline, even the accompanying stories, did not explain HOW Willie Mays scored from first on a single. He had to be moving on the pitch. He had to notice the way the outfielder was turned. He had to see how the cutoff man was set up. He had to …Nothing. The only thing that papers said was that Willie Mays was at it again. That was enough. Heck, the night before he had scored from second on a wild pitch. Later that game he mashed a 400-plus foot home run. Yep, Willie Mays was at it again. Claude Debussy is the musician who said that music is the silence between the notes. Mays’ genius was the silence within the scorecards.
Happy 80th birthday to the Say Hey Kid

Another quality start from Ryan Vogelsong. He's 3-0 with a 2.86 ERA and a .205 opponents average against and hasn't given up a run in his last 13.1 innings pitched. The Giants have won all four games he's started.

Zito has begun throwing and should be available sometime in the next two weeks. A lot can happen in the next two times through the rotation but Vogelsong has pitched well enough so far to keep the gig. Zito supposedly isn't well suited to bullpen work because of his long warmup routine. Bumgarner hasn't pitched as badly as his 0-6 record would indicate but he may be a candidate to go down.

I know there was some speculation Zito might be cut in Spring Training (not sure if they were from anything more than a daydreaming reporter). Has there been any further news on that? Chances he'll get traded for a bag of doritos if a team will take his contract?

I guess the World Series honeymoon ended late last night.

Losing Posey is obviously a huge blow. He's the best bat in the lineup and there's no organizational depth at a key defensive position. Both the blocking and barreling elements of the play are legal. Whether or not they should be is another topic.

This should add to the debate about whether Posey's future is behind the plate. I've argued in favor of moving him in the past but it's a very tough decision for Buster and the organization. There's a long time to consider this before pitchers and catchers report next February.

Sorry for all Giant fans with Posey's loss - it will be a huge loss for sure

Maybe they tire of sending Whiteside and Stewart out and call Bengie Molina - at least he can hit one out once in a while.

Looks like Belt will be recalled today with Darren Ford also put on the DL, but that just muddles Bochy's outfield selections.

I also saw a note that they might be recalling one of thier other good prospects - Brandon Crawford a very good glove at shortstop who would likely be overmatched at the plate - but still better than watching Miguel Tejada every day.

Crawford has been productive offensively in the minors this year, although it took an unusual demotion from AA to A to get his bat started. I'm not optimisic but then I'm usually not when it comes to rookies.

Brutal to watch that play last night. The play was clean and within the rules. Hope to see the rules changed or adjusted to protect the players better. Hated to see that happen to Buster.

I always found it weird that a runner can barrel into a catcher to try and knock the ball out. Honest question, would it be legal for the catcher to initiate the contact on the runner to knock him from the plate?

Without the ball it would be interference.I would say they could institute a slide or surrender type rule, similar to plays at second base.

If this happened to AJ Pierzynski, no one would be saying a word about changing rules. Some would probably even be cheering the fact that it happened. Just because an up and coming star ended up on the wrong end of this thing doesn't mean rules need to be changed.

If it had been Pierzynski, the story would have been about how he managed to knee the trainer in the groin with a broken ankle

I agree about AJ - but that's because he's an ###.I still don't see, though, why you need this in baseball. But I'm not sure how to fix it really. Other than enforcing the interference rule.

And Sabean wasn't sure if he would ask baseball officials to consider discipline against Cousins."We're going to wait a couple days, so we can take the emotion out of it," Sabean said.
Ask the league for discipline? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I understand it's your young superstar, but a lot of sour grapes coming from SF front office.

Within the rules or not, it was a chicken#### play. Is it legal to blow up the first baseman while he is stretching on a close play at first? Cousins had a clear lane to the plate and he went out of his way to take out Posey. He will get his sooner or later.

So do all Giants fans file lawsuits and make death threats against opposing players and coaches, or just everyone but you guys?

Guess it only takes one ring to go from long-suffering to insufferably douchey. See also Red Sox, Phillies

May you all enjoy 20 more years of the Yorks
