Rules:

Players: 16

Scoring:
Forwards:
Goal - 5 points
Assist - 3 points

Midfield:
Goal - 6 points
Assist - 3 points
Clean Sheet - 1 point

Defender:
Goal - 7 points
Assist - 3 points
Clean Sheet - 3 points
1 Goal Allowed - 1 point

Goalkeeper:
Goal - 9 points
Assist - 3 points
Clean Sheet - 6 points
1 Goal Allowed - 2 points
PK save - 2 points

Clean Sheet/1 Goal Allowed Rules - a player (GK / DF / MF) must play at least 45 minutes in order to be eligible for their respective points. If a halftime substitution is made, both players (the starter and the sub) are eligible for points (provided each plays the entire respective half). Note regarding extra time shootouts in knockout rounds: FIFA officially scores games as a tie with one side winning a shootout (ex: 0-0 (4-2)). We will adhere to official FIFA results for our purposes - in the above example, each team's players would be eligible for clean sheet points.

PK Save Rules - the GK must actually make a physical save on a PK during active play (ie extra time shootouts don't count). If the opposing player misses the net entirely or hits a post without the GK making a play on the ball, it will NOT count as a PK save. Essentially, the GK must physically touch the ball somehow, resulting in a non-goal.

All players:
Started a match - 2 points
Substitute appearance - 1 point
Yellow card - (-1) point
Red card - (-3) points - note that a double-yellow will be (-3) TOTAL, not (-1) for the yellow and (-3) for the red.
PK miss - (-2) points

THE FIFA WEBSITE WILL BE THE OFFICIAL SCORING SOURCE.

Roster size
NOTE: rosters are capped at 3 players for any given team.

Group stage:
2 Goalkeepers
5 Defenders
5 Midfielders
3 Strikers

1 Flex field player (no GK allowed)
NO BENCH PLAYERS

Knockout stage rosters:
1 Goalkeeper
4 Defenders
4 Midfielders
2 Strikers
NO BENCH PLAYERS

If the knockout stage begins and your team has more than 11 players, you must choose to release as many players as needed to get to 11. This must be done BEFORE the waiver period.

Player eligibility is determined by Wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FIFA_World_Cup_squads. If a player's position is edited mid-draft, we will default to the player's position when he was drafted. Ex: a player is drafted as a MF per Wikipedia, and then Wiki changes to FW. The player will be considered a MF for our purposes.

Waivers
There will be 1 waiver period - between the finish of Group H's group stage (Thursday June 26) and the beginning of the knockout stage (Saturday June 28). This means that the official waiver period will be on Friday, June 27, 2014 (an off-day).

Waivers will work as follows:
Every team will be allowed a maximum of 3 transfers (see below for exception). Your roster MUST be 11 players in the positions specified above at the end of the waiver period. ALL CUTS must be performed before midnight, so that everyone knows the full pool of who is available.

You cannot cut a number of players to get your team below 8 players (again, see below for exception). Say, for example, that your team has 10 players who qualify for the knockouts. Let's say that you don't want 1 of them - you cut that player to give you 9 players. You are eligible for 2 pickups. Example 2 - say your team has 13 players who qualify for the knockouts - you MUST cut 2 players. You can cut up to 5 if you want to be eligible for waivers. If you do not submit your cuts before midnight, your lowest-performing player(s) at the requisite positions will be automatically released - assuming it keeps a full squad for you for the next round. You will not be eligible for waivers.

If your team has 9 players going into the knockout round, you CANNOT cut 2 players to give yourself 7 players and 4 waiver pickups.

Waivers will be processed worst-to-first for every waiver round. Last place will get the first crack at the beginning of every waiver round.

Special rule: If a team has less than 8 players heading into the knockout round, there will be extra waiver rounds instituted for that person to pick up more players. The extra waiver rounds will be at the END of the 3 rounds.

Trading

Trading of picks and players is permitted up until the start of the first game of the tournament. After kickoff of the first game, no further trades are allowed.

Draft
Serpentine draft. If you draft a player who is does not make his team's final 23-man roster, either due to injury or simply being released, you will be eligible for an additional make-up pick at the end of the draft.

The roster deadline is June 2. I think we could potentially start a day or two ahead of it, as I doubt any players taken in the first handful of rounds will be cut, barring injury.

Note that I am out of town leaving June 11.

Also, feel free to chime in on any rule change suggestions. We have used the same rules, I believe, in both tournaments and they seemed to work well. We just need to make sure any rules are set before the draft starts.

For the 2010 WC we had 14 teams and a player was only drafted once.

For the Euro's we had 16 teams and doubled up on players.

I'm open either way.

I'd prefer players drafted once, if we can.

I'd prefer once as well. Want to bump the fee to $30?

We have 16 interested parties with a loose cap of 14. Is anyone interested in teaming up? Or we could make the rosters slightly smaller and open it up to 16 players?

Also, thoughts on upping the entry fee to $30 as proposed by Fear the Turtle? It's okay with me if others are okay with it.

How would you propose the rosters go smaller if we make it a 16 teamer?

Are we absolutely against double players?

I agree with going up to $30.

Current group stage rosters:

2 GK x 14 = 28

6 DF x 14 = 84

6 MF x 14 = 84

4 ST x 14 = 56

Possible change:

2 GK x 16 = 32

5 DF x 16 = 80

5 MF x 16 = 80

3 ST x 16 = 48

Something like that?

I'm itching to get started, these drafts take about 10 days normally.

Should we start organizing, rolling for draft spots, paying, etc.

Official rulings:

- Entry fee is $30. Please Paypal the money as soon as possible to Derek for safe keeping. He has been the safe-keeper of the funds for both of the past 2 tournaments, I think. I like there being a bit of separation between commish and money. If anyone has a problem with Derek handling the money, please let me know. Derek's email:

Derek.Boesken -at- gmail -dot- com
- Truck out, Aaron in. Truck is an alternate or if someone wants to bring him on as a teammate. The 16 people are now set unless someone wants out.

- Officially expanding to 16 teams. Roster requirements changed to: 2 GK, 5 DF, 5 MF, 3 ST. I will keep the knockout round rosters the same unless anyone objects: 1 GK, 4 DF, 4 MF, 2 ST.

- The draft will start on the morning of Monday June 2. Please do your best to check in regularly as we have 15 rounds to get through in about 9 days. If we are falling behind, I will shorten the clock or introduce 3ITC or something, and I'd prefer not to do that.

- One more reminder that I am out of town with effectively no internet access and very minimal text/phone access from the morning of Wed June 11 returning Monday night June 16 (no spoilers on the USMNT game, fellas, I'm gonna watch it right when I get home). Any help of any kind, inputting statistics, handling any issues, etc. during that time is greatly appreciated.

Other notes:

- If you draft a player who is removed from his team's roster before the tournament starts - either by virtue of being cut from the 30 --> 23 player cutdown, or a last-minute injury replacement, you will have a makeup pick at the end of the draft. The draft is 15 rounds; you would have pick 16.01. This happened last time when someone drafted Nani and he got hurt and replaced before the tournament started. If the tournament starts and your player gets hurt, tough luck.

- I don't like the way ESPNFC is set up, so I am proposing that we use Wikipedia as the ultimate source. Obviously this is a questionable resource as any of us could theoretically just edit a player to any position that we want. That said, I think it is the easiest source as all of the teams are listed on one page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FIFA_World_Cup_squads - please let me know your thoughts on this. We can use a different resource if people are worried about any funny business.

Now that we have an odd number of rounds, should we add a 16th or something to even it out? Maybe have the 14th and 15th rounds not be serpentine? As it stands, the 1st pick has a bit of an advantage as they pick first in 8 rounds but last in only 7.

Dice roll for draft picks:

http://www.rpglibrary.org/software/securedice/?op=&dq=1&ds=1000&mds=6&dt=1

Please roll 1d1000 1 time (the link should be set up to take you directly to that setup, hopefully), and email the results to me with your FBG name and any other identifying info in the subject line:

pete4999 -at- gmail -dot- com
Draft order will be determined by highest roll...highest picks first, second-highest picks second, etc.

If we can get 24 how about running 2 parallel leagues? Big prize for most points in both leagues, smaller one for winning the other? It be nice to have more soccer that regulars in this.

There doesn't seem to have been much interest other than the regulars. We only had 17 people (to my knowledge) express interest.

I don't mind if we split two leagues, but I don't know where the other 7 people are coming from. And someone else would have to commish the second league.

Bump for the day crowd. Things to note from the posts above:

- dice roller posted above. Please roll for draft order.

- thoughts on using Wikipedia as a source rather than ESPNFC? Or any other resource that people have in mind is up for discussion.

- should we leave it at 15 rounds or 16? 15 rounds gives the people picking at the front of the draft order a very slight advantage with the odd-numbered rounds.

Any good simple pool / fantasy sites for the World Cup that I could send out to get people in the office more interested? Thinking pulling 32 teams out of a hat is too simple (but may be the only answer) and drafting teams of players would be too much for people. Is therea good online free option you guys know of?

Thanks!

I agree on using Wiki, ESPNFC was sloppy with their positions.

I say we go 16 to make it even.

6 people have rolled and 4 have paid so far. Please do so this weekend if you have not done so already. Post #3 updated with current draft positions.

Had anyone heard from Grateful Zed or Bonzai? Both indicated interest but have not posted in this thread yet.

I will take a partner but I already paid and have all final decisions, lol. I can be talked into almost anything and I am easy to deal with. I am on the road a bit so someone that is on here a bunch would be ideal. :-)
