***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (2 Viewers)

Well hopefully "bicep tightness" is due to the weather changing which is common. I don't really trust anyone in this bullpen right now outside of Dotel. Benoit has given up more homers this year than he has the last two years combined, Al Al is too wild, Villarreal seems to melt in high pressure situations and Coke and Valverde stink. Need a 9-1 win today with Verlander going 8.

I didn't think they'd win lat night either but I didn't expect 5 1/3 of what Smyly did either. They gotta start hitting, Peralta is hitting .170 with a .475 OPS over the lat month. How about sitting him for a game Jim?

With the first game of the playoffs (not counting wild card game) being next Saturday, I have to think Verlander's pitch count will be allowed to go pretty high. He hasn't thrown very many stressful pitches so I have to think 130 will be relatively easy for him. I hope Leyland has the same thought.

:goodposting: or, or wait for it....SCORE SOME ####### RUNS!!!!!

Can't believe the bullpen has melted down like this, I thought we were gold.

Dotel is fine they say, and should be available tomorrow. I think he's the 8th inning guy now because if you watched today, you understand Benoit's problem. He can't locate his change-up for a strike and the hitters know it and sit on the fastball. Benoit is precise location and keeping the ball down, he's not doing either of those things now. I think you still pitch him in high pressure situations, but I'd move him off the 8th and use him before when you need him.

One other bit of good news. Villarreal was not warm when he came in yesterday, he was called right before they went back out after Dotel said he was hurt. Villarreal is a combination of power and control when right and we have to lean on him to get outs. Although I like Al Al, he has a ton of work to do with his control, composure and his fastball. He is a one pitch pitcher and that won't end well at some point. We have a bigger sample size with Villarreal also, I think you put him out there in the 7th or earlier the next time you have a high leverage situation.

Those four should be fine if they can work out their individual issues, I think both Benoit and Villarreal can right the ship tomorrow but Al Al is still too raw and I don't think you know what you're getting when he comes out there. Coker can be used vs LH hitters only, Smyly if Scherzer is fine can be used as a bridge and same with Porcello. The thing with Rick is that he's pitched in big games before, I think he's a better option than some of these relievers if we get to the playoffs.

Valverde is Valverde, we can't fix that and shouldn't worry about it.

So if the season ended today, we'd play the Yankees again in the Division Series.

I think that's ok. We clearly have better starting pitching (assuming Scherzer can go). And, we'd get the first two games at home. So the Tigers would throw JV and Fister the first two games.

I like our chances.

If Baltimore wins night (they are up), they are tied with the Yankees. I don't think there is any doubt you want to play the team with a +7 run differential.

Wouldn't the ideal setup be that the Tigers win the division outright. Texas gets the #1 seed and Baltimore and New York tie so they have to have a one-game playoff to determine division champ. That way both teams will have used up their ace.

You don't watch Baltimore much, they don't have an ace.

Let's knock that magic number down a point or two today. I don't want Max to have to pitch on Wednesday. Be a good day for Sanchez to flirt with a no-hitter.

Not sure why anyone is worried about pitching match-ups anyway. Liam Neeson with his five bad movies and 6 ERA is shutting us down today.

As long as Tampa Bay wins, it will be a good day. Unfortunately this team just doesn't seem to have it. Just fortunate to maybe back into the playoffs.

Tigers RHP Max Scherzer (shoulder) said he felt good after playing catch on Saturday and could be available to start the regular season finale against the Royals on Wednesday. Leyland said the team would be cautious with Scherzer, who missed his last start because of soreness in his deltoid.
I say he starts on Wednesday regardless of if they have clinched or not. He needs the game action and even if it's just three innings, it will benefit him for a possible playoff game 3 start. Gotta get one more though, I'd like the Tigers to do it on their own and having Porcello doing it would be nice in a tough season for him.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing on Max. They already have him on the scheduleWed, 10/3at Royals8:10pFS-D, MLB.TVScherzer (16-7)Mendoza (8-9)

It is too bad Sanchez did not have another year ot two left on his contract, he is settling in very nice here and looks like a good fit for the rotation with Pocellos problems.

Trade Jay Honey for a prospect, sign a min vet type, then use the Valverde + Jay Honey $ (Delmon too) to re-sign him.Anibal + defensive shortstop >>>> Jay Honey + Brad Penny redux

Closest I come to any certainty is that the Central Champs will be opening at home Saturday & Sunday vs one of the other 2 division champs. Games 3 thru 5 would be on the road starting Tuesday.

Jay Bell or Jhonny Peralta, depends on who you are talking to.

Max had a bullpen session today and said he felt 100%. He said that he still had pain last tie but today he threw as hard as he could, and felt great. This is good news.
