***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (3 Viewers)

I would almost consider giving Smyly the closer role. He has been outstanding. The downside may be that Smyly has a chance at being a really good starter.
I don't know why they didn't let Smyly stay on in the 9th after giving up a hit. They still had the 2-0 lead ...see if he can get the save. His track record has been very good ...no reason to think he'd blow the lead like the other fool. Soooo frustrating.

That looked like the White Sox loss last night, completely unexpected and awful in every way.

Go with Benoit, send Valverde to the independent league. Giving up a homer to Markakis or Singleton is one thing, giving one up to Lorenzo ####### Cain is quite another especially on an 0-2 count. Rondon is not the answer, still walking too many guys. He may be ready to close next year or maybe even later this year, but not now. I wish he was the answer, he has the stuff and I think promoting him to pitch as a bridge again should happen soon.

Tigers relievers now 4-12 which is pretty bad and again only muster two runs. Can't move baserunners over, stranding too many guys and generally not putting hits together at all.

Valverde has to go though before he divides the clubhouse with those who support him, and those who don't. I was fine giving him another shot but he's just going to do this again, and probably one or two times after that. You can't use him in the 8th, you can't use him to face one batter and you can't use him with runners on base. So? Don't use him, let him go and call the experiment a wash for the 9 saves he got in 12 chances. I'd rather lose with Rondon or Smyly or Greco out there to be honest, at least I know there is hope. With Valverde there is none, he's a black hole of inspiration.
Rondon's walks are still a problem, but his WHIP is 0.9, he's striking out more than 11/9 and he has yet to give up a homerun this year.

Dump Valverde, bring Rondon up, put him in the 8th and let Benoit close.

I also think that when the starter goes less than 7 and the Tigers have a fair shot at winning the game, they should just hand the ball to Smyly and let him finish it out. He's a good starter that has been pretty fantastic in relief.

And I still don't get the idea that I hear over and over again on sports radio that the Tigers should start Smyly and make Porcello the closer. Is no one seeing what Porcello has done since that miserable April start? The guy's ERA has been just over 3 since the calendar flipped to May and he's striking out more than a batter an inning.

Why f with the stability in the rotation they have right now?

With an off-day today there has to be some kind of meeting of the minds on what they are going to do with the closers job. It probably won`t happen but Valverde should be released today. As much as I wanted him to succeed he just does not have it anymore. Plus it loks like his mental edge is gone...why is he always bending over looking like he is going to hyper-ventilate all the time now?

Coke is another one...he seems to be fine in the 6th or 7th inning..put him in in the 8th or 9th or in a pressure situation like yesterday and he just can`t seem to get it done.

Coke has definitely improved from the disaster he was last year and in years prior, but for the most part, I agree with you. Personally, I think igbomb is on to something when he suggests putting Rondon as setup man and Benoit as closer, because that would take pressure off the rookie and also give him experience in the majors.

Coke's now 0-4. Even if Rondon gives up a walk or two ...it's certainly no worse than Valverde giving up hits (and stolen bases). I'd take the excitement of Rondon over the drama of valverde.

Time to seriously consider a trade.

Joel Hanrahan?

Franscisco Rodriguez?

Heath Bell?

JJ Putz?

I am not sure what we give up though.

Has anyone noticed Valverde bending over all the time and taking deep breaths looking like he is ready to black-out or that someone needs to call 911?? Never seen him do that before this year..and now he is doing it 2-3 times a hitter. The other teams dugout has to be pumped when they see a pitcher looking like he has no confidence in himself.

Plus as DD stated..the free pass stolen bases are a huge concern. If a player get on it is auto-steal. Catcher has no chance and a runner is in scoring position.

Could have had K-Rod for nothing more than a minor league up till late April. I thought Dombrowski would take 2-3 cheap fliers on these kinds of guys in case Rondon was not the answer.

His windup is ridiculously long. I could get a decent jump on him, even if he throws from the stretch.

Nothing is really good about him right now.

I hope they give Benoit/Rondon a shot before going the trade route. Why throw away a prospect when you have a potential closer sitting in the pen?

Hanrahan is :deadbanana:Putz and Bell both would come with a good chunk of 2014 contract obligations. The Diamondbacks look to be contenders and might not want to deal bullpen depth. Both would probably pass through waivers post Aug 1 because of the future money.K-rod has pretty much been lights out this year. It's an obvious move for the Brewers to open bidding a month from now if he doesn't blow up before then.K-rod

Stuff like this is why I want us to try out The Beard.

Sigh...I do the love the Big Potato, but come on. 0-2 you throw three balls after that...

Ok.

TRR Plan

1, Smyly is now 8th inning

2. Benoit is Closer

3. Rondon comes up and you use him in spot relief to see how he does in the bigs now.

4. Valverde goes home.

Peace

I'd mortgage the farm for Papelbon.
They should be able to get him for next to nothing. His contract is terrible.
I got no problem paying $6 for a pizza.
I don't care about the salary. But no need to give up the farm for a guy they would probably gladly hand to the Tigers for nothing as long as they get away from that contract.
Yes, that's what I pretty much meant. Money > prospects

Gotcha. I'm with you.

Holy Cow, Jhonny won this thing himself. Not only hitting but two gems in the infield.

Another good one by Porcello.

Jimmy put the potato in to see how he woudl recover and he did well also.

Nice.

Peace

The wheels sure came off quick for the Minn pitcher. What did I see in last night's write-up ...Detroit pitchers have 19 quality starts out of their last 20? They've been incredibly steady of late.

Well that sucks.

Avila and Sanchez both put on the DL. Avila with a deep forearm bruise. Sanchez with a shoulder strain.

Leyland is optimistic that Sanchez will only miss two starts.

Holoday and Avisail called up for now. Garcia will be sent back down for Alvarez later in the week.

Hanrahan is out for the season, Putz has been out for a month, Bell was Mr Meltdown last year and K-Rod is the Hispanic Todd Jones.

Questions I asked my buddy via text:

A. Why is Andy Dirks in the lineup when Garcia and Tuiasasopo are on the team?

B. Why is Dirks not bunting with a runner on 2nd and no outs?

I think we know the answer to both those questions...

Smyly should be used only if you are willing to go two innings. You could basically put him out there in the 7th every other day, and let him pitch two or three innings. When he's not available hope that you can use Benoit in the 9th because the starter went 7 and 2/3. I think tonight was a perfect spot to use valverde and I was surprised Leyland didn't, so maybe his days are in fact numbered.

John Axford's name being floated around but that dude is super meltdown man also. Tigers would likely be in Papeldoosh sweepstakes because the Phillies probably want to rid themselves of his contract first and foremost. Too bad the A's don't suck, we could get Ryan Cook for a bunch of guys Billy Bean likes that no one else does. Jesse Crain was a good suggestion by whoknew. Peralta from Tampa? They always seem willing to trade. Almost any of those San Diego dudes I guess. Hernandez from Zona. Cishek from the Marlins would be fine and we love trading with them. Parnell or Frank Frank from the Mets?

For the record, I love the idea of closer by committee. I think Benoit and Smyly should be tier one for late inning work, then Downs and Rondon (send Reed down) should be tier two. Coke is a lefty specialist only and Valverde and Putkonen as mop-up duty.

If they would just put me in charge.

This.

So Detroit pitchers have given up 46 home runs. Only St. Louis is better (43), and Colorado's a bit behind (51) ..then it jumps to 58 on up to 99. They're tied with Atlanta for lowest WHIP (1.17).

Our bats are certainly holding up well also - leading the majors in BA and OBP.

Going to be sitting in a suite for Friday's game against Boston. It will be a game-long battle between my tendency to take full advantage of the food and drinks at these types of things and maintaining a level of decorum since it is a work function with some higher-ups.

T&Ps appreciated

Keeping Valverde for anything other than as a closer is a waste of time. He is horrible in non-save situations. Come to think of it, he is not all that great in save situations.

I couldn't agree more, but it doesn't seem like the Tigers are inclined to cut him just yet.
