***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (2 Viewers)

Rayburn actually was hitting half-way decent for a couple weeks. But striking out 3 times in 3 at bats was not a good way to go into All-Star break.

 
First place at the break and they haven't done anything to get excited about. I'll take it. Second half. Jim Leyland. Buckle up.

Verlander down? 12 wins before the break, 2.15 ERA, a no-hitter and another near miss? Prealta, Boesch, Martinez, Cabrera, and Valverda are having great years. Scherzer, Avila and Ordonez having good years too. Yep, there are a few turds who hopefully get replaced or start performing, but it has been about as good of a first half as anyone could have expected.

Yea I'd be surprised if DD doesn't make a trade for a starter. Not sure who is available.

Yeah they are definitely gonna need another starter. I like what Penny has done but that 5th spot in the rotation has been a black hole lately and Furbush should have been sent down three weeks ago to get stretched out. Looking back at it I wish they had traded for Mark Reynolds who was gotten from the D'bags for two relievers. Reynolds is an average nightmare but with all the walks he takes and homers he hits, who cares? Inge is brutal, I still hate Raburn more but Inge is turning into a hitless error machine and if they would have lost the game on that error today, that was it for me when it comes to Inge. Hoping he'll rebound in the second half, at least play some solid D and hit a few HRs. Raburn is too much of a butcher at 2B to like, Guillen coming back can't be worse. He's hitting pretty well in Toledo but I'm not sure how he is looking at 2B, maybe someone else here knows.

Being five games up on the White Sux and 6.5 up on the Twins at the break is great though and we all would have taken that to start the season. Not an exciting team but as others have said we've had some great seasons from Verlander, VMart, Peralts and Boesch while Miggy stays a stud. Porcello and Scherzer are the keys for the second half and if they don't acquire another starter via trade Furbush or Oliver is gonna have step up and give the team some quality starts. I also wonder why tey haven't given Below a go. He is on the 40 man roster, might as well give him a start or two with the way he has pitched in Toledo.

The team has been meh and to be in first is more than anyone could have expected. They haven't been very good. They have to be the worst team in the league when it comes to having productive outs. I'm thrilled they are in first but I don't expect them to be there in the end. History says they won't be.Pessimist- An optimist with experience

Nothing really jumps out at me as far as Detroit's schedule goes, other than they have Boston and New York out of the way.

Cleveland and Chicago schedules seem typical.

As stated earlier in this thread, Minnesota made hay during the easier part of their schedule and has a few more games against better teams in the second half. Upside for the Twins is they have a large number of home games. They'll have to be better than .500 at home in the second half though.

I think the Tigers second half schedule is easier than the first. They finished the Yankees, and Red Sox. Have one more series vs. Tampa. Obviously divisional games will be key in the second half. Tigers just need to win some games against the White Sox coming out of the break to keep some separation from them and the naysayers off their backs. They play the Sox 6 times right after the break. If they go 1-5 and allow them to creep back into the race with them and Cleveland right after the break then you're going to start hearing folks talk about the second half swoon and how they're already screwing up. Hopefully they can avoid that problem/distraction. I do like how we get to set the rotation up for the series after the break and are playing at home though. I don't know how Guillen is looking in the field but he's hitting real well in AAA. Hoping we can add him to the lineup soon after the break (although I realize he gets injured everytime someone sneezes next to him. Just need to add a 5th starter and hope that Avila, Boesch, Peralta, Valverde don't return to earth in the second half. We've got 6 guys who have played at an all star level for the first half yet we're still just a handful of games over .500 and in a dogfight with Cleveland in a weak division. Should be an interesting second half (as they always are)....
 
Miguel Cabrera had to leave Tuesday's All-Star game with side stiffness.

Uh oh. There's no word yet on the severity of the injury, but hopefully it was just a precautionary move and he didn't tweak an oblique. We'll provide an update on Cabrera's condition when more information becomes available.

 
I find it interesting that the Tigers have never had a winning record after the allstar break under Jim Leyland. This shocks me, considering he guided them to the World Series in 2006 and to a Game 163 loss to the Twins in 2009. Based on stats from Baseball-Reference.com, here’s a look at Detroit’s post-break records under Leyland:

Year: Record (Games lost to AL Central lead)

2010: 33-43 (From 0.5 GB to 13 GB)

2009: 38-38 (Led by 3.5 G, finished 1 GB)

2008: 27-41 (From 6.5 GB to 14.5 GB)

2007: 36-40 (Led by 1 G, finished 8 GB)

2006: 36-38 (Led by 2 G, finished 1 GB, taking wild card)

I think Jimmy needs to produce this year or he gets the door

He put a competitive team out there year after year. Prior to Leyland, Detroit had twelve consecutive losing records with some pretty horrible years. In Leyland's 6th season, he should get his 5th winning record. Leyland is far from perfect, but is a solid coach who has done a good job in Detroit.
 
I posted this in another thread.

I took the % of wins from each of the teams in the AL Central against the AL East, AL Central and AL West. Then I took those numbers and entered them in against each of the teams opponents in the second half. I know this is flawed because a team might have a higher winning % against the AL East because they played Baltimore a lot in the first half but they play the Yankees and Red Sox a lot in the second half etc... but it's still fun to see how it comes out.

Detroit Tigers 92-70

Cleveland Indians 84-78

Minnesota Twins 79-83

Chicago White Sox 70-92

Kansas City Royals 66-96

Let me just go on record by saying I don't think this is how the division will finish exactly.

My prediction would look more like this:

Detroit Tigers 83-79

Minnesota Twins 81-81

Cleveland Indians 79-83

Chicago White Sox 77-85

Kansas City Royals 69- 93

 
Wandy Rodriguez and Jeff Keppinger for Porcello and Casey Crosby.

Would consider that I think. At least a good starting point, if we can keep Turner and Furbush and get an INFer and a #3 starter I think I'd do it.

You think so? Is the upgrade from Porcello to Wandy worth the money and Crosby? I'm not ready to give up on Rick and not that enthralled with Wandy. I'd rather the team try to fill holes by trading prospects, not trading pieces who are already contributing for possible upgrades.

You think so? Is the upgrade from Porcello to Wandy worth the money and Crosby? I'm not ready to give up on Rick and not that enthralled with Wandy. I'd rather the team try to fill holes by trading prospects, not trading pieces who are already contributing for possible upgrades.

Well the Wandy contract is not terrible and he's signed through 2013. He is a big upgrade over Porcello and Keppinger is an upgrade over Inge or Raburn so there is that too. This is just the first of the rumors, I like Wandy though especially at Comerica.I don't hate Porcello either, but I think Furbush and Turner are the two I'd least like to deal. Crosby is gone, he's getting traded.

I like Kuroda....as an NL Pitcher....pitching in the NL West parks....against the NL West. I think he'd get bombed if he came to Detroit.

NL lineups, he faces a SP instead of a DH. SF, SD, LA all have pitcher friendly parks. SF, SD, and Arizona have had pretty weak batting lineups the last few years. His track record, albeit very small, against AL teams is less than impressive.
 
Tigers scouted Jimenez last night. Now that would be exciting. It would undoubtedly take Turner - but that would be worth it.

Wandy is at best a mild upgrade over Porcello, and is nearly ten years older. No way the Tigers should make that swap. And the Tigers don't need to swap pitchers (unless Ubaldo is involved), they need to ADD a pitcher. Give Colorado the farm for Jimenez and let the front three of Verlander/Jimenez/Scherzer light it up in the postseason.Of course, the odds of a trade of Ubaldo are probably around 1%.
 
I thought Wandy was a few years younger. Tigers talking to Atlanta about Lowe also but he has a $15mm salary next year, yuk.

Must win today, must win.

Yep. Was starting to look like the start the Tigers got off to last year when they got swept and fell out of the race. The difference between winning this game and losing it is enormous. Victor and Guillen with the biggest knocks of the year, AA with one of the biggest outs, Valverde with one of the biggest saves after throwing so many pitches yesterday and to AJ to lead off the inning. Phew.

Yeah losing two out of three isn't good but the win today is the difference between being two up on the Sux, and four up on them. Indians lose and they are back tied for first. This team isn't very good, but they aren't any worse than these other teams in the Central.
 
It is like a breath of fresh air that Ryan Raburn is no longer the regular 2B. I still don't like Guillen hitting before Avila and Mags hitting in the 3 hole but I'll take the baby step for now. If they can get Ulbaldo somehow... wow.

 
Below is a local guy, and I'm not sure why it has taken this long to give him a look this year with the way he has pitched.

Orioles are scouting Furbush and there is speculation this is because the Tigers are interested in Jeremy Guthrie. Well there is no way the Tigers can make a straight up deal for Guthrie (not becuase of the 3-13 record but because of the K/BB ratio over his career) so maybe they are indeed asking about Mark Reynolds. Not a Guthrie fan at all, but he'd be better than Derek Lowe because he won't cost a ton of money next year. Still not worth Furbush though, no way.

I think Kuroda is gonna be the best mix of good without breaking the bank (in either salary or prospects). Rockies are asking the Yankees for their whole farm system for Ubaldo, I think that is fine for a big hitter but not for a big pitcher because of injuries.

I would gladly take Captain K over Inge at the hot corner. At least when he does connect it goes a long way.Guthrie? Lowe?Yeah, Kuroda is starting to sound better with every new name listed.
