***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (4 Viewers)

I'll check back in mid/late July. Enjoy.
Ok, it's early July, but Jesus does this team suck or what?
You have to wonder: If the problems persist for the Motor City Kitties, how much longer can they afford to pretend this is just a really good team off to a slow start? The fact that this squad was the no-brainer pick to win a mediocre division heightens concerns that things aren’t going the way they’d like them to right now. Do you send manager Jim Leyland packing based on the club’s inability to win consistently so far?, or do you stay with Leyland

Right now, this Tigers team is what it is...a .500 team. They can't hit when they need to hit and can't pitch when they need to pitch. They aren't good enough to win. I'm not all that hopeful that things will change.

I think this too. A .500 team - can't get everything going at once and the injuries haven't helped. I just hope they don't try to patch it up by trading away a top prospect, or a bunch of prospects in hopes of making a run. I'd rather regroup next year with V-Mart returning, tweak the roster in the offseason, and dump Leyland for a manager that will have this team better prepared to play each day. The team seems way too comfortable with him and he doesn't seem to be changing his approach - time to change it up. That being said I keeping trying to be an optimist and keep thinking to myself that maybe they can squeak in like St. Louis did in 2006 and 2011 and make a run. But their defense and overall team baseball IQ is so terrible I don't see them winning consistently, let alone, against good teams when they need to. This season has been horrible to watch. If they were in any other division they'd be having a firesale right now. The pitiful AL Central is the only thing keeping them relevant right now, not their level of play. The other thing I keep asking myself is who is the leader on this team? Verlander? Seems like he is but it's hard to be the leader being a guy that pitches every 5th day. It's not Cabrera, Avila is too young, and Fielder just got there. Why they haven't had someone call a players only meeting and get things figured out is beyond me. Seems like a rudderless ship. Leyland is obviously not going to call a meeting - funny how in 2006 he took the team out to the woodshed in April before the road trip to Oakland. That was a turning point for that team and set the tone for the rest of the season. I don't see why someone doesn't try that now. The whole mentality keeps being - let's just coast along and then we'll put it together and make a run. This team hasn't won more than 2 in a row since May 25-27. Good luck with that type of mentality. On the Lloyd piece - I will say that the team has been hitting much better of late. My question on that is how much of that is attributable to Lloyd or Toby Harrah. Why Lloyd keeps his job while Harrah is with the team is laughable to me. Just give the job to Toby and be done with it - he's doing Lloyd's job anyway. The silver lining from this season is if it doesn't end up well Leyland will finally be gone.

Well, they changed it today with the 7-3 win. Prince comes through with the timely (and big) hit. Young gets a big hit when it's no longer necessary, which is quite typical for him. But the stinkin' Sux pulled out another one. We'll have to take care of them ourselves after the break. AJ and MC still rocking!!!

Killer stadium. You guys are lucky to have something that nice.
3 out of 4 detroit pro team stadiums are awesome. Need a new one for the wings now. Hope you enjoy your stay in the D!
Thanks! Ford Field looks awesome too. Yea, we were just walking on the river, looked to the right...and there's Joe Louis. Caught me by surprise. Looked like another building.
you going to the game again tonight? you check out greek block? the casinos? Layfayette coney?

Not going tonight. Heading out to Ann Arbor right now. Saw Greekville, MGM Casino and had Lafayette yesterday. Checking them all off the list. Went to a place called frankenmuth (?) the other day - phenomenal fried chicken.

Its funny, TM, the Young HR was sort of necessary yesterday (and I am a Young hater). Ryno and I were at the game and it was hot as #####. After the Prince HR, there was a decent cheer, but everyone kind of just sat back down. Same thing happened on both plays at the plate for outs earlier in the game. On the Young HR, it was clear to us that it hit the green railing above the yellow line. No idea WTF the umps were seeing yesterday as Rayburn clearly caught the ball he dove for early in the game (we were about 15 yards from him and he dove right towards us). The crowd was jacked after Young's hit was not ruled an a home run, spinning their hands in the air and cheering for them to look at the replay. I took forever to Smokey to come out of the dugout, but when he did and it got them to review the play, the crowd stayed up, went nuts when they called it a home run and stayed into it though Valverde's final K.

We got taken to Grizzly Peak. Goooooood beer.

Went to the game last night and it was a steam bath!! Good thing is that RyRay is looking much better at the plate as of late and Valverde seems to have his command back. Just need the WhiteSox to lose a couple now.

Valverde's fastball looked much better last night and had a lot more late movement.

I did not think the Sox were going to be about 10 games over going into the All-Star break, but you can't expect to make the playoffs playing .500 ball. Good to see Leyland lighting a fire under Raburn and Delmon's butt. I am very optimistic about the second half, but the first half was disappointing outside a few. Getting Fister back in form will be the key to a successful second half. That and some clutch hitting. Relief pitching looks to be solid finally.

I'm hoping this team is playing with some urgency now and not just thinking they are righting the ship by getting back to .500. They've already done this once this season and dropped the ball again. I like that the hitters are finally showing some discipline. Clearly Lloyd was a problem and I still don't like how he has been protected by Leyland but that's what you get with the old chainsmoking dummy.

f-ing Velverde. Even with a 4 run lead he manages to put the tying run in scoring position

The guy is a machine!!!
This series is why he needs to stay on the roster. Although not ideal, he's a better option to put in the lineup than the likes of Raburn and Boesch. Raburn getting thrown out at first just pisses me off - even if he somehow gets on base he screws up base running. Oh, and he also botched a ball at 2B yesterday. Guy is completely worthless yet they still trot him out there so he can find a way to hurt the team.Jackson saved Valverde's bacon in the 9th.

Team MVP through 1st Half:

1. Miguel......71 RBI's...just doing what he always does.

2. Jackson.....wow....impressive 1st half. And I was worried he would not be a good leadoff man after 180 Strikeouts last year.

3. Verlander....Pitching great as always. He deserves to be better than 9-5

4. Prince....Very good year....but not great.

5. Villarreal...with the exception of Valverde, the bullpen has really picked things up.

6. Quintin Berry....love what he adds to the team.

ETA....Delmon is moving up the charts!!!!

Prince now will go into the All-Star break with 15 taters and 63 ribbies. Plus close to 40 base on balls. Prince is compiling some good stats.

unf-ing stoppable!!!!
 He'll most likely get mentions for MVP after the scorching 2nd half he's about to have.
:lmao: He has 10 HRs, four in the last four games. A .716 OPS out of your DH is unacceptable, he better start drawing more walks because at some point everyone is just going to autowalk Fielder. Hopefully Avila and or Boesch can straighten things out because Delmon is just not to be trusted drawing five walks in 215 plate appearances streak. I hope he hits great in the second half and earns himself a long-term contract with another team.Scherzer is the #2 pitcher and he should be mentioned before Berry and Villarreal above. I like those two guys a lot but they are bit players in the grand scheme of things. No mention of Castellanos being named futures game MVP?Tigers need to trade for a 2Bman or Corner OFer and I'm not crazy about trading for a guy like Matt Garza either. If Fister can recover I like the starting pitching just fine, Scherzer has been terrific lately and Porcello has been good outside that last outing. Orioles, Angels and White Sux out of the gate in the second half, we'll see what this team has but I'm not buying it yet. Any line-up with Raburn in it four times a week and Boesch in it more, is toublesome. When people start getting excited about what Delmon Young is doing that tells me they have some serious holes. Maybe Toby Harrah is actually scouting the other teams though, they have hit since he was named associate hitting coach.

Radio talking heads mention that Castellanos is being moved to LF in the minors. Toby Harrah = human rain delay guy?

Mike Hargrove was the human rain delay. Those Detroit Talk Radio Guys are idiots, they really know nothing about baseball (I hate Cavuto in particular). Castellanos is being worked out in the outfield, he's not been moved anywhere yet. It is probably best to leave him at 3B unless they think he's coming to Detroit next year out of Spring Training. He's 20 years old and has a sub 800 OPS in Erie, he's not ready yet. They better not trade him though unless they get a real established star in return, otherwise it would be pretty stupid given the lack of position player talent in this organization over the past 30+ years.

We need a second base and a outfielder. What players at those postions will be available? Let be realistic here because I doubt the Tigers will take on a contract dump with their payroll.

I'm guessing many would disagree but I don't like the thought of trading for Justin Upton. I'd have to guess that Arizona would LOVE to get a 3B of the future since they really don't have much. All the rumors about Arizona's willingness to move Upton scare me. It has got to mean he either has injuries that could affect his career or he's just a lazy jerk like his brother. Otherwise why would you move a 24 year old potential superstar who is under contract through 2015?

I want Castellanos in a Tiger uniform.

Matt Davidson is Arizona's 3B for the future. I too would be real upset if we traded Castellanos and it'd probably take him to get a guy like Upton. I won't gripe if we trade anyone else though.

I didn't know anything about Matt Davidson. According to some blurb picked up by MLB Trade Rumors, the D-Backs would be in the market for a 3B, among other positions.
Justin Upton Rumors: Tuesday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 10 at 7:56am CST]

The Diamondbacks are willing to listen to trade offers for Justin Upton, the 24-year-old outfielder who finished fourth in National League MVP voting a year ago. Teams are already checking in on Upton, and interest is said to be huge. Heres the latest on the Diamondbacks and their right fielder:

The Diamondbacks are seriously open to the idea of trading Upton, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic confirms. The organization has outfield depth in the Majors and minors, so the club could replace his production in the short term. Some decision makers in the organization dont seem crazy about Upton, as the recent comments of managing general partner Ken Kendrick suggest.

The Diamondbacks would be looking for a third baseman, shortstop or top-of-the-rotation starter if they trade Upton, Piecoro reports.

The Pirates are interested but they dont match up well with Arizona, Piecoro writes. Its possible the Blue Jays could be a fit, however. The Diamondbacks are known to like shortstop prospect Adeiny Hechavarria, though he wouldnt be enough to tempt the Diamondbacks.
I think Arizona would want more than just Castellanos for Justin Upton.ETA: Looks like Upton's contract balloons from 6.75 mill in 2012, to over 9 mill in 2013, then over 14 mill for 2014 and 2015. And Detroit is one of a few teams he can block a trade to.

Maybe they're projecting Davidson to 1B or LF? He's just 21 and has taken big strides at double A this year lowering his previously troublesome k:bb and he's hitting for more power, looking more and more like a 25/95/.275/.340 bat. Last I read he was still developing his defensive skills at 3B, but he was far from a lost cause. And, I agree, it'd take more than Castellanos to get Upton so I don't see anything there.

Well Verlander will have to pitch on the road in game 1 of the World Series this year, hopefully he makes up for his performance tonight.

I like that thinking!Reading JV's comments on the Tigers' website this a.m. was interesting. He apparently laughed it all off ...decided the fans wanted to see 100 mph heat, not working the corners at 90 mph. After one 100, Fielder shouted "Ver, 101!" and JV complied. He stated he typically establishes his mechanics early in the game and then is able to pitch hard (with accuracy) later on. I'd have preferred some shut-down mastery (like the two K's he got), but that's just me. Back to our regularly scheduled winning streak ...

Considering it now includes piping Kate Upton, I figure he'll tire out around mid-August.

Yup, his fastball should be spent by then.
