***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (2 Viewers)

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Tigers are talking to the Marlins about a trade for Omar Infante. It makes sense for the Tigers, as Infante would be a clear upgrade at second base. The 30-year-old is hitting .284/.309/.448 with eight home runs, 33 RBI and a .757 OPS this season and is solid defensively. He is under contract for $4 million next year.
I would be just fine with this move. Doubt it would cost much.
I always liked Omar.

Tonight's game is going to be a good indication of how the Tiger's second half will be. If Fister is back in form, the Tigers will be in good shape to win the divison especially if Smyly gets healthy. If Fister struggles, the Tigers will strugglge too.

Nice welcome to the majors for CJ Wilson from the Tigers.

Eric Hipple to Jeff Chadwick, 38 yards. Lions in an early 7-0 lead!

ETA: Less HARS although really it's HAR infinity since it's so damn funny.

10 Fisterings and only 2 hits in 8 innings! Don't know if he gets a shot at the CG, but it appears Fister is back!

freep rumour chatter:

Here's a roundup of what's hot on the web today regarding trades the Detroit Tigers could/should/would make before the July 31 deadline.

• Scott Miller of CBSSports.com reported that the Tigers, Yankees and Royals were in attendance for Astros left-hander Wandy Rodriguez's start in San Diego. He gave up five earned runs in just four innings in the 8-4 loss to the Padres.

• USA Today reports the Marlins are discussing trades that would send second baseman Omar Infante to Detroit. Infante played for the Tigers from 2002-07 and is hitting .284 in 80 games with Miami this season.

• Jon Paul Morosi, foxsports.com: "Tigers, WhiteSox and Orioles have checked in on Padres lefty Clayton Richard. Former Michigan quarterback. Pitches today in SD."

• Buster Olney, espn.com: "Detroit is said by execs to be among most active teams in pursuit of a starting P -- and their search presumably intensified after Tuesday's game."

• Ken Rosenthal, foxsports.com: "The Cubs are exchanging names with teams interested in right-hander Ryan Dempster, and the Dodgers, Tigers, Braves and Red Sox all remain in the mix, major-league sources say."

• More Rosenthal: "Ryan Dempster’s first choice is the Los Angeles Dodgers and his second is the Atlanta Braves, according to major-league sources. ... Dempster’s primary wish is to go to a contender, and he likely would consider any of the teams interested in him, including the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals."

• Joel Sherman, New York Post: "As for Dempster, the Dodgers are currently viewed as the favorites, the Tigers as strong pursuers and the Red Sox — (GM Theo) Epstein’s former team — as long shots."

• Toni Ginnetti, Chicago Sun-Times: "Sources say interest from the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees isn’t nearly as strong as several reports indicate. That might leave the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves at the front of the Dempster derby. "

• More Morosi: "This year, the White Sox, Tigers and Indians are likely scouting many of the same trade candidates. One starter who would fit nicely for all three teams — Minnesota’s Francisco Liriano — pitches for a division rival. ... It’s possible the Tigers could have a new pitcher by (Sunday) — whether Liriano, the Mariners’ Jason Vargas, the Cubs’ Ryan Dempster, or another outside option."

• Jim Bowden, espn.com: "The Detroit Tigers would like to acquire another starting pitcher and an upgrade at second base, but with an inflated payroll and their unwillingness to include Nick Castellanos or Jacob Turner in any deal, it means they’ll probably make one or two smaller trades rather than a blockbuster. They’d like to get Darwin Barney from the Cubs for a mid-level prospect."

• More Morosi: "I will say this: I would be very surprised if Tigers moved Nick Castellanos for a rental."

It looks like Fister is back. Max is pitching very well. Justin is Justin. Porcello is servicable as a 4th or 5th. The Tigers only real need for a starting pitcher is to get Smyly healthy. I don't see it as a pressing need. I like the rotation going forward.

If the price is right I'd like one of Garza, Dempster, or Shields. Max still struggles vs. lefties, which could really bite us in a short series, and expecting Porcello to take a turn in the rotation in October is wishful thinking. Sure, the light could turn on, but realistically it probably won't.

Is Smyly going to miss his next start too? If so, who is pitching against the White Sox this weekend? Turner?

ETA- Looks like Turner is pitching Sunday.

My guess is Smyly will also miss at least one more start. After that, it might be time to panic. Perhaps Turner can show a little something this time.

20 of the 32 runs scored by the Tigers since the All-Star break have come with two outs. Toby Harrah doing work people.
As suspected, Toby Harrah has been working exclusively with Brennan Boesch on identifying pitches and strike zone discipline. If the Tigers make the playoffs and Leyland comes back next year, I think the evidence is in that Lloyd is an idiot and should not be back.

Nice win today for the Tigers. I was hoping for a split from this series. Taking 3-4 from the Angels was a bonus.

It was especially impressive doing it without Verlander.
True, but now the pitching match-ups favor the White Sox this weekend other than tomorrow, and with the way Peavy owns the Tigers, even tomorrow isn't a slam dunk. If Porcello and Turner get destroyed the Tigers recent surge will feel a lot less encouraging. Really need to take 2 of 3 this weekend in my opinion. This is a huge series that could set the tone the rest of the way. I don't see the White Sox imploding this year whatsoever.

Any trade that gets Raburn off the roster would be a good one. The Tigers are playing their best ball of the year right now. I don't think any major move is necessary. On a related note, Inge has a stellar .211 batting average in Oakland.

Sux are struggling a bit right now, the break hit at the right time for the rest of the division. If we slam the door tomorrow night with JV I bet we take one of the others this weekend. And I wouldn't rule out the Sale game, we can hit lefties pretty well.

As long as the tigers don't get swept, it is not that critical. Too many games left and the Tigers are pitching a fill-in and their worst starter. If the Tigers get 2 of 3 it will be a huge bonus, IMO. The Tigers are finally looking like the team they were suppose to be. Let's hope the clutch hitting continues and Smyly can come back soon.

I was at the recent game in Chicago where the Tigers rallied from 6 down with a few 2-run homers off of Peavy. We do need this first win tonight ..then hopefully steal one of the next two. The Sux have a lot of young players - I have hopes that they'll fade (physically and/or mentally down the stretch).

The Sox are a veteran club. I'm not sure who you mean by a "lot of young players". Maybe Sale, Reed, De Aza, Viciedo? Otherwise it's a whole lot of Vets.

Even if they stop hitting I think their pitching keeps them in it for the long-haul. Gotta hope Verlander is special tonight, because we aren't winning tomorrow and Turner goes Sunday.

Subtracting the actual teams they will play, the schedule doesn't look too bad. Seven (7) off days & no doubleheaders. Nice not having a bunch of rainout makeups clogging things up and making 5th & even 6th starters always needed. That said, another solid pitcher would give them some insurance in case of injury, etc.

Detroit Tigers' Dave Dombrowski: Nick Castellanos 'very close' to being ready for majors offensively

DETROIT -- Nick Castellanos is "very close" to being major-league ready at the plate, according to Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski.

As an outfielder? Castellanos still has some work to do, but he apparently has plenty of promise.

"As Gene Roof just told me, he's going to be a good outfielder," Dombrowski said Wednesday afternoon, referring to the Tigers' baserunning and outfielder coordinator. "He's not going to have any problem being a good outfielder. Is he a good outfielder yet? No. Is he going to be a good outfielder? Yes."

Castellanos made the switch to right field last week after playing third base for Single-A Lakeland and Double-A Erie prior to that. Dombrowski gave a quick rundown of his abilities in the outfield.

"He runs well enough, he has a good arm and he wants to be successful out there," Dombrowski said. "He's an intelligent guy. He knows that Cabrera is at third base here. The quickest route for him to play with us is in the outfield."

Dombrowski said the move to right field is not set in stone. The Tigers could eventually move Castellanos back to third base or over to left field. (Although third base will not be an option as long as Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder are both on the team.) Castellanos might even play at third in the Arizona Fall League, Dombrowski said. But for the foreseeable future, he will play in right field.

Castellanos hit .405 with a 1.014 OPS in 55 games for Single-A Lakeland before being promoted to Double-A Erie. He is hitting .302 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in 34 games there.

Two times in a four-minute conversation about Castellanos, Dombrowski interjected the phrase "his bat's getting very close to playing" into a sentence.

"Let's just say his bat plays well enough," Dombrowski added. "Well, he's not going to come up and play at third base for us right now. But he might be able to do it in the outfield. I'm not saying that he is, but he might be able to do it in the outfield."

It was suggested to Dombrowski that saying Castellanos's bat is "getting close to playing" is saying a lot.

"He's a good hitter," Dombrowski responded.

In the end, he could be a solid outfielder, too.

"He works hard at it," Dombrowski said. "He's worked hard and he's made a couple mistakes out there, which is understandable, but he's done very well early. Gene Roof's very impressed and he said he's going to be a good outfielder."

Maybe one of the Tigers can get a bat on the ball.....maybe

ETA....Finally...BTW, crappy effort by Rios on Boesch's double. He should have caught that.
