***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Have to like that Tigers are serious about winning. Infante will be a huge upgrade. I personally was happy with the way our rotation was shaping up. Sanchez will be alright, but he won't be a Fister. A slight upgrade to Porcello, and maybeN that was probably all we need. I would have rolled with Smyly/turner, but the infante part is impossible to argue.
Can you unpack this?
He will upgrade the 4th spot in the rotation, push Porcello down to 5th. It should translate to a couple extra wins, and really that is all you can ask. From the perspective of this year it is a great deal, especially the vast improvement at 2nd.
You never had heard of Sanchez before Sunday correct? He struck out 200 guys last year, he and Porcello are complete opposites in styles and Sanchez's numbers are quite a bit better this year, last year, whatever year. He took two no hitters into the 8th and 9th innings for Christ sake. On paper this is not a slight upgrade, it's a big upgrade. Scrump>Sanchez had shoulder surgery in 2008 and had issues in 2009 as well. Not sure why we'd worry too much about that right now, he's not been to the DL since 2009 and probably won't be staying after this season anyway.

Hopefully Sanchez will feel at home right away with his Venezualan brothers Miggy, V-Mart, and Infante in Detroit. He doesn't have the best record against AL teams even though the sample size isn't that big. Toronto destroyed him earlier this year, Tampa took care of him, but he pitched pretty well against Cleveland.

I like that his career splits show he's better over the 2nd half and he's close to a K per 9.
I wouldn't be as concerned with his performance in specific games - he enduces a lot of ground balls, strikes guys out, doesn't have a walk problem, and can handle lefties - that's usually a recipe for a good pitcher. I'm more concerned about his shoulder than anything.
He's got a bum shoulder?
Yep, missed most of 2009 with it. I don't think he missed a start this year, but I do remember reading about potential shoulder and velocity issues earlier this year. Hope they're past him because healthy he is the guy from the last year and a half.

I pretty much watch the tigers and that is it. I was familiar with his near no hitters but that is about it. Looks like a guy consistently just under a 4 era and wins half of his games. Yes a good half point below Porcello in era. Porcello is not a strikeout guy, but he does limit his walks and wins games. The tigers have won 8 of his last 10 starts. Porcello is a very good 4th/5th guy.I hope he is a big upgrade to the pitching staff, but I will wait to see how he performs in the American League. Assuming they both get a similar number of starts, my guess is they have close to the same number of wins. I am not seeing the major impact like Fister gave us, but then again the need is not nearly as big as last season. When healthy, we have a good staff. Now it is better. How much better, we will soon find out.

Sanchez is a better pitcher than Fister.
I would bet Fister wins mores games and has a lower era from now to the end of season vs. the same.
I don't evaluate pitchers based on W's and ERA so you won't be getting a bet from me, easily two of the most unpredictable cats. K's, BB's, weakly hits balls, QS - much better metrics. Fister's good, but Sanchez is better.

Herd? Really? Jonmx>I like your honesty but Sanchez is a better pitcher than Fister all things considered. We struck gold with Fister, even when he's meh like tonight. Sanchez is gonna get a FAT contract because he's got #2 stuff. If he pitches to talent, we easily win the division (even if we can't beat ####### Cleveland).

But Raburn heats up late in the year,

I like the thought of getting VMart back for the playoffs, assuming the Tigers get there

AJ

Quintin

Miguel

Prince

VMart

Boesch/Young

Infante

Peralta

Avila/Laird

It is hard to believe what Raburn does in Aug/sept

2009 Aug. .327

2009 Sept. .321

2010 Aug. .308

2010 Sept. .378

2011 Aug. .323

2011 Sept. .383

Not wanting to make the case for Raburn, but those are good numbers.

Has anyone read/heard anything about Anibal's reaction to be traded to Detroit? I know it is business, he's a professional, and players get traded all the time but they were showing Sanchez sitting in the dugout last night with Verlander next to him. He looked disengaged and there was no talk between him and JV. It looked almost uncomfortable.

I'm positive I'm reading too much into it but hope he is on board physically and mentally. I'm interested to see what he does against Toronto this weekend, a team that absolutely shelled him earlier in the season.

CLEVELAND -- It's a really funny story, Anibal Sanchez said, how he and teammate Omar Infante made their way from the Marlins in Miami to Ft. Lauderdale to Cleveland with the Tigers."They left without us," he said. But after their scheduled flight out of Miami was delayed, and after they missed their next one, and after they drove to Ft. Lauderdale and flew Tuesday morning to Cleveland, Sanchez and Infante landed safely at Progressive Field, in the welcoming arms of a first-place team."This team is in a good position right now," he said. "Right now, I'm here, and I'm glad."Tigers manager Jim Leyland is glad, too, admitting before Tuesday's game that he thought the team needed another starting pitcher, another arm "with whiskers," but didn't know if acquiring that arm "was a makeable putt."But anything is possible when general manager Dave Dombrowski has the putter in his hands, and roughly 24 hours after a text message from the Marlins during Sunday's game, the Tigers' rotation has another solid starter on their hands."Everything is going to be new," Sanchez said, "but I'm going to do the same thing I do all the time, try to make outs."But now, he'll be doing it against American League lineups -- starting Saturday against Toronto -- and doesn't expect much of a change in his approach."I just want to work and do the same," he said. "I try to use the right pitch in the right moment. Basically, I like to throw everything for a strike."Sanchez throws five pitches: four-seam and two-seam fastballs, a change-up, curveball and slider. He was 5-7 with the Marlins this season, while compiling a 3.94 ERA in 19 starts and striking out 110 batters in 121 innings. He has a lifetime ERA of 3.75 and has made more than 30 starts in each of the last two seasons, nearly eclipsing the 200-inning mark both times. Now, with the Tigers, he has a golden opportunity to pitch in the first postseason of his seven-year career."I think everything happens for a reason," said Sanchez, 28. "It's a good opportunity to be in the playoffs."He found out that opportunity after the Marlins' batting practice in Miami on Monday, when teammates wished him well before Florida manager Ozzie Guillen and general manager Larry Beinfest could pull him into the clubhouse."I was surprised," he said, noting that the only team he heard his name rumored with was the Atlanta Braves. "But I'm just going to take care of my job like when I was a Marlin, and I'm going to do the best I can when I take my mound."

I heard he was studying every hitter and the nuances of the ballpark intently, making mental notes and did not want to shoot the crap.

Again, doesn't strike me so much as a guy who is legitimately excited to be on his new team.

:lmao: I guess Leyland's just a worrier, that's why his friends call him Whiskers.

Yesterday sucked....for as many games are the Tigers have blown, it is amazing they are only 1/2 game out of first. So as frustrating as most of the year has been, the Tigers are still in great shape.

Porcello's last six outings before tonight

IP H R ER BB K7.0 10 2 2 1 26.0 6 1 1 3 7 7.0 4 0 0 0 43.2 12 3 3 1 05.2 8 5 5 3 58.0 5 1 1 0 4
Obviously consistency is a big problem here. His stuff looks better to me, seems to really be trusting his four-seamer more and the downward action on all his pitches leads to productive games. Then you have a game like tonight where he's walking Travis Snider to load the bases and then watches the likes of Jeff Mathes clear them.

Not the best week. Hopefully that can get put it together and win a few good games and not make this road trip a complete disaster.

This is more frustrating than watching the team go for the most losses in a season. Perhaps they really are no better than a .500 team.

Was reading through my Deadball Era handbook and found this interesting note:

Shoeless Joe Jackson scored the first ever run at the brand new Detroit Tigers stadium on April 20, 1912.

Shame that Jackson was banned from baseball, even more of a shame he has yet to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Pretty shaky evidence surrounding him being a part of the Black Sux throwing that series IMO.

Fister just outstanding today. I like the pitching on this team quite a bit, the rest outside Miggy, Prince and AJAX I pretty much hate.

Fister has been very good since the All-Star break. He is looking like last year again. I tend to discount his first half since he was injured and has just found his groove. I know I am in the minority, but still see Fister as the second best option on the team.

Am I the only one still on board with Avila? I think last year really hurt him this year due to the wear and tear on his knees as he basically played hurt + every day once Victor couldn't catch anymore. I'm not sure if he gets hot or not this year, but long term I think he'll bounce back.

I like him. I think he probably overachieved last year and his numbers going forward will be more like this year than last. He seems to always be nicked up which is a concern. I like his defense and how he handles the staff. Laird has been very good this year. I wish they'd play him a bit more. He deserves it and it will help keep Avila fresh.

Avila is a good defensive catcher and I like his swing a lot. I don't really count them individually when I say the rest, just part of the group that is hard to watch night to night. Avila to me is a very good long-term solution at catcher, above average with some all-star seasons mixed in. But he'll need to play some 1B or DH because he seems to get beat up more than almost any catcher I've ever seen. jon>I don't think you are in the minority. Fister is the most consistent starter over time so he'd probably be the 2nd best option for a lot of people. Scherzer and Sanchez have better stuff though, with Scherzer really having borderline #1 stuff when he's on. With him it's head and location though, I think tomorrow in Boston vs that line-up is a good test to see how far he's come. If he pitchers well there, I'm convinced he's our #2 starter. Also on Sanchez...give him a few Comerica starts before developing an opinion. He looked really good early yesterday but those homers got the best of him and the final line wasn't great. I think he will get in a groove and be key down the stretch.

Jim Price made a good point about Sanchez..said 90% of his first pitches were fastballs and the Jays were sitting on the first pitch fastball and killing it. They had 6-7 first pitch hits off Sanchez and all were fastballs. Price likes Sanchezs arm..said he just has to pitch smarter. On another note I am a litle concerned about Infante...the first few games I have watched him he reminds me dare I say..a little like Delmon Young at the plate. Taking wild swings at bad pitches. DD what is his career number in terms of BB and OBP? Hopefully he is just a little nervous and will settle down.

Infante learned not to walk growing up in the Tigers organization, I doubt that changes. He'll be fine though but I'd rather have Dirks as the #2 hitter.
