Fister just outstanding today. I like the pitching on this team quite a bit, the rest outside Miggy, Prince and AJAX I pretty much hate.

Jhonny's usually better in the 2nd half, maybe yesterday was his start.

Is Q-Tips 15 minutes about up?

CLEVELAND -- Nick Castellanos soon will get instruction from the man who played rightfield perhaps as well as anyone ever has.

Al Kaline will visit Castellanos to work with him on his conversion to right, Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila said Thursday night.

Castellanos, the Tigers' top prospect, was moved to the outfield from third base two weeks ago so he'd have somewhere to play when he gets to Detroit. Miguel Cabrera is entrenched at third base.

"Nick is working hard and is making good strides," Avila said. "Gene Roof (the roving minor league outfield instructor) is having him go through every drill and situation imaginable, and we are going to send Al Kaline in there soon for his expert advice."

Kaline, known as the flawless rightfielder in his Hall of Fame career for the Tigers, serves as an outfield instructor in spring training.

Surprised the stats say that, he often picked it up in the 2nd half in Cleveland and obviously his first two months as a Tiger were strong after a bad start in Cleveland.

I'd say so, he just needed to be the bridge to get us back to Dirks. Job well done. I'd be for sending him back down for August to make sure he continues to get full time AB's, his speed is needed come playoff time though.

Al Kaline - I'm ..old, so my memories are the '68 Tigers and watching Al Kaline through the years. For all the money these players now make, it surprises me that at least of few of them don't just stay with their team, knowing they'll be revered for life like Mr. Kaline is in Detroit.

I believe agents are partly to blame. They preach to the player that they need a max out contract over anything else. The players are letting the agents make decisions for them.Pujols should still be a Cardinal.

One of these guys is going to have to be a roster victim once Dirks returns. Is Smyly going to stay in Toledo or will he pitch a bit down there and then return to be an arm in the bullpen?

I would definitely prefer Smyly to be in Toledo getting starts. He can be used as a spot starter or whatever in Detroit but I think they need to stay on plan with him because he's our #5 starter next year. Let him go down to Toledo and strike out some AAA guys for awhile.

I texted my buddy:

Bases loaded, one out. I say Delmon pops it out to SS on the first pitch.
Result: Swing on a slider out of the zone on first pitch (Price said advanced scouting report said Buchholtz loves the slider on the first pitch out of the zone. That's what Buchholtz threw). Second pitch, GIDP 6-4-3#### Delmon Young. Any chance he can go to jail tomorrow? If Dombrowski even considers re-signing this POS I'm driving to Lakeland next spring and punching him in the junk.

DD, I will buy you a beer.

relax, I doubt Delmon makes it to Aug 15th with the Tigers.

Focus on Max pitching like a stud tonight.

peace

For August? Yeah, but we went 14 batters 11 arms in October last year so I'd bet on a similar makeup this year. I think Berry goes down so he keeps getting full time ab's.

I think a long relief role would be a good move too. That'll be his job if we make it to October and it also keeps him stretched out in case injury forces him back into the rotation.

Soriano or Delmon at DH? I'm guessing Delmon would be let go if this happens.

Better not give anything and I mean ANYTHING of value for Soriano. He's at least 50 years old.

I think it would be ridiculous to send Berry down. He has earned the right to play, at least against RH pitching. His speed creates a lot of problems for other teams. His numbers are solid. And no, I don't think he should sit for Dirks.

You know what they do? Pull Young vs righties and have Dirks DH until he's ready. Beckett threw 17 pitches to get the first six outs, Verlander 35 in the first. The difference between these two teams is Boston will actually take A ####### WALK!

Verlander looked like piss today. There goes his streak too.
Impressive run, 62 straight games of at least six innings a team record. His command is off lately, he looks like 2008 Justin at times which is bothersome. There is no way I would have thought at any point in the season he'd walk a runner home. Sucked they went to the rain delay with bases juiced, I think coming out of that with the guy (Infante) having an hour to think about it is tough. Then again he probably would have popped up anyway, disgusting turn of events on this roadtrip after you were starting to think they were finally on track. Nope.

What a bunch of bull#### that was.

It had been raining throughout the game and then they stop it with bases loaded and two outs? I can never remember a game ending like that in my life. #### those umpires, terrible.

Yep, that's pretty bad form with 2 outs and bases juiced.
Perhaps the umps were just sparing us from having to watch Raburn bat.

BOSTON -- Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland took the high road after a 4-1 loss to the Red Sox that was called because of rain with the Tigers having the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth.

"You can't do anything about it,'' Leyland said. "The weather didn't cooperate very good all night, but that's the way it goes. People have to make decisions and you respect that.''

But according to another club official, the Tigers filed a complaint with the commissioner's office when the game was postponed after a 1-hour, 45-minute wait. The Tigers' contention was two-fold, according to the official: They questioned whether the game should have started at all given the fact it was raining steadily from the first inning onward. But once the decision was made to play, the game should not have been halted at that juncture unless the umpires had a reasonable certainty the game would be resumed.

Otherwise, the official said, the Tigers should have been allowed to complete the inning -- there were two outs -- before play was interrupted.

Asked if he was surprised that Omar Infante, the next scheduled hitter, was not allowed to bat before play was called, Leyland said, "Well, I don't know, at some point umpires have to make a call. It's a tough call, whether we could have got through that. You know you've got the bases loaded and you're a little bit excited that you've got a shot, but the umpires do the best they can with that stuff.

"We had been playing in some pretty heavy rain, and I think that Jerry [Layne, the crew chief] just decided at that point that he needed to stop it. He gave it a good shot to try to get it in, but from what I hear, it's not supposed to stop until around 1 or 1:30. Certainly to call the game at this point, I thought was the right call.

"Could we have maybe gotten through that inning, who knows? Like I said that's a tough situation for an umpire and I think that they definitely made the right call to call it. So be it. We put ourselves in an unfortunate situation.''

The Tigers are locked in a tight race with the White Sox in the American League Central. They could also wind up battling for a wild-card spot with the Red Sox.

The weather brought an end to Justin Verlander's 63-game streak of going six or more innings in a start. Leyland said that even though Verlander was at 107 pitches and trailing, he planned to bring him out for the home half of the sixth.

"Yeah, I was going to unless we had a situation where there was a little delay or something, or a long inning, then he was going to come out.''

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine gave a tongue-in-cheek response when asked about the game being halted with the Tigers threatening.

"I think it's a great rule,'' he said. "Perfect."
Is Bobby Valentine ever not an idiot? His players hate him, fans boo him, and he still goes on thinking he's the cack of the walk.Typical east coast bias. :lmao:

I can't stand Leyland. Coke had no business coming out for the 7th. Pen didn't pitch yesterday, off day tomorrow and Coke got hammered in the 6th and on Monday. Use someone else you senile old fool!

:goodposting: But nice to see another back-to-back by the big guns. I saw stats recently that show Prince leads the league with RISP - clutch. An Oprah night for the guys - "I've got a hit for you, and for you, and for you ...everybody gets a hit!"

He loves Coker and was trying to give him a shot at redemption, but Phil doesn't have it right now. I thought for sure Dotel was coming in at the start of the 7th and then when I saw Coke trot out there, even against Carl Crawford, I thought it was probably a mistake. I can't wait until Benoit is the closer. He's probably gonna blow about as many as Valverde but he's gonna have a ton of 1-2-3 saves to make up for it. Valverde good last night, but he makes my stomach upset.

Former Twin Delmon Young hopes for plea deal in hate-crime case

Associated Press

August 2, 2012

NEW YORK -- A defense lawyer says he's trying to work out a deal with prosecutors in Detroit Tigers outfielder Delmon Young's hate-crime harassment case.

The former Minnesota Twin was briefly in a Manhattan court Thursday, August 2, for an update on the misdemeanor case.

He's accused of yelling anti-Jewish epithets at a group of tourists, tussling with them and tackling one to the ground in April.

The Tigers were in New York to play the Yankees.

Defense lawyer Daniel Ollen says he and prosecutors are discussing a potential "disposition that's acceptable to both parties."

Prosecutors say only that they they're not making any offer at the moment.

Young has said he regrets what happened. He's free on $5,000 bond and due back in court Nov. 7 -- after the World Series.

Tigers shuffles Nos. 5, 6

Brennan Boesch batting fifth against a right-hander in the finale at Fenway, with Young dropping down to sixth for the first time this season, wasn't just for one night.

"I'm going to leave it that way," Leyland said. "I'm making that move."

Boesch responded against the Sox with a run-scoring single. Young had two hits, including a solo home run.

Avisail Garcia, Bruce Rondon continue to post strong numbers for Double-A Erie

Published: Thursday, August 02, 2012, 4:25 PM

Nick Castellanos is not the only Detroit Tigers prospect playing well for Double-A Erie. Outfielder Avisail Garcia and closer Bruce Rondon are posting some impressive numbers as well.

Garcia has a 10-game hitting streak and is hitting .415 during that time. Over his past 10 games, Garcia is 17-for-41 with three doubles, a home run and five RBIs. He went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored Wednesday in a 3-2 victory over New Hampshire.

Garcia is hitting .308 with an .828 OPS for Erie this season.

The hard-throwing Rondon continues to post impressive numbers. He is 0-1 with a 0.48 ERA and 12 saves in 19 outings for Erie. He has allowed three runs on 12 hits and nine walks in 18 2/3 innings. He has 20 strikeouts.

Of course, Castellanos has received plenty of attention for his play. He is hitting .310 with six home runs and 19 RBIs in 49 games for Erie.

The Tigers have a need for a right-handed bat, and some have speculated that Castellanos could be called up at some point this season. Those calling for the Tigers to make that move would be interested in Castellanos's numbers against left-handers during his time with Erie: 25-for-55 (.455), four doubles, one triple, two home runs, eight RBIs, 1.137 OPS.
