What do you think the odds are the Tigers make post-season play? Can`t be any better than 50-50 at this point. WhiteSox are not going anywhere. The number of pissed away games this year seems very high compared to last season.
Better than 50/50. Even if they don't catch the White Sox there are two wild card spots with the likes of Oak, LA, TB, and Balt in the mix. Some big series ahead with Chi, Oak, and LA. They need to do well in those head to head games. At least the LA and Oak games are at Comerica. Those should be a great atmosphere, especially Oak with Inge returning. This team has pissed away more games this year but to be fair they were like 76-0 when leading after 8 last year and they were never going to repeat that. The number of mental lapses this team has, in the field, on the bases, at the plate, etc. are mind boggling though. Coaches are no exception - that LaMont report of missing the sign last week pisses me off and I am still mad he didn't send the runner home Saturday night. I've always said the silver lining if they miss playoffs is Leyland will be gone. Don't get me wrong he has done a lot for this team and is a good manager but I think it would be good to have new voice in charge of the team. His message seems to have gone stale.

Yes, I figure 50/50 for the division + maybe another 20 points added with the 2 wildcards factored in. 70/30?And yes old smoky should be canned along with his fatass 3rd base coach if he can't make the top 5 in the AL with this payroll.

we figured out that they were the Twins.

Fister goes 8. NO EARNED RUNS. Boss

Very few people realize how important it is for the starter the night before a get away game gives the BP some rest. This is awesome in the long run.

Peace

Fister is 5-1 with an era of 1.52 in last 7 starts. Fister is the difference between the tigers being a .500 team and one that makes the playoffs. Sanchez on the other hand has made the tigers worse. A couple more bad outings by Sanchez, and I will be hoping that Smyly might return to the rotation.

Fister:  I saw they changed one of Fielder's two same-play errors to just a failed fielder's choice. Still, not a good night for the big guy. In general, I really like this line-up. Five .300 hitters, plus Avila or Laird, both of whom have a good knack for getting on base, plus Peralta and Young and Boesch, who have their moments. The pitching has had a bad cycle of late ...starters not too sharp, and the BP giving away a couple. This team could easily go on another hot stretch.

Listening to DD and Jim Price yesterday and both were really down on Sanchez. Price said he has good stuff but is puzzled by his lack of intensity and just not competing.

The difference between the Tigers being a .500 team or playoff team comes down to hitting, period. Verlander, Fister and Scherzer are a great top three and Porcello is a solid back of the rotation guy who has excelled in the late months in the past. Sanchez has not been good, but there is enough time for that to change. I like your "I was not big on Sanchez" shtick though, even if you had never heard of the guy before last month. :thumbup:ETA: Scherzer :moneybag:

I did look at Sanchez's stats. Just not that impressed. Decent era, good strikeout numbers, but a losing record. There maybe better metrics to judge a pitcher by. Perhaps wins-loss record can be largely luck, but it can also be a sign of intensity, which so far has been the issue. Just has not been stepping up with the big pitch in critical situations. Sometimes you can dig too deep into the numbers.

That's fine, but if you watched him last year and early this year you realize how good he can be.On the effort/intensity thing, the guy is playing for a contract so regardless of what the talking heads think...I'm quite certain the guy is giving full effort. Maybe he's spending to much time in Mexicantown with the chicas. :unsure:ETA: Also the next chance they get, they should split up Sanchez and Porcello and stick Fister in-between. 16 of the next 19 are at home, if they aren't ahead of Chicago at the end of that they never will be.

Looks like they are skipping over Sanchez with the off day scheduled. JV-RP-DF for the Baltimore series. Blue Jays series rotation not set yet but I would assume Sanchez & Max to start.

We have four starters pitching well. If we can get Sanchez to start pitching sub-4 era, life will be good down the stretch.

I will be in Detroit area for a couple weeks in Sept, unfortunately the tigers will be on a road trip most of that time. Should be able to catch two Oakland games though on the 18 and 19 th.

Thankfully the White Sox are as chitty as the Tigers. Who will back into first when all is said and done?
You've got that right. Hopefully it's the Tigers. Two more frustrating losses. Jhonny misses too many chances before finally contributing yesterday; Porcello starts to lose it, and Leyland stays with him a bit too long. As for today, Fister to team: "give me some runs for a change, guys!" Bottom of first: "thanks! I've got it from here." Top of second:  . The walks just killed them today.Cabrera is seriously flirting with the triple crown (and hits, and runs). Tigers need to win the division if for no other reason than to help Miggy get the MVP.

On another note Fernando Rodney is having a really good year. 38 saves an a K per inning. All for 1.7 Tampa does seem to get some good bargains.

Looking at the 60 or so guys in the all-star game, him & Granderson were the only former Tigers. We got AJax & Max for Grandy so no problem there, but FRod is doing well these days.

I haven't seen many Tampa games, but he has walked less than 10 batters. I have to think he is finally commanding his fastball. That is all that stopped him from being dominant before because his changeup is unhittable.

Detroit Tigers' Doug Fister strains right groin; his start Saturday now in question

DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland told reporters after Doug Fister's poor start Sunday that the 28-year-old right-hander didn't look "quite right."

He was right. Fister was playing hurt.

Fister strained his right groin Sunday afternoon while throwing warmup pitches prior to the first inning, Leyland told reporters Tuesday.

"I'm a little worried about him," Leyland said.

Fister underwent an MRI on Monday at the Detroit Medical Center and was diagnosed with an and his next start. As a result, his next start Saturday is now in question.

"You know, I can’t guess that (whether he’d make next start)," Fister said. "It’s tight today, so we’re treating it as we need to, and we’re going to kind of play it by ear."

Fister said he initially didn't feel pain, but felt the area tightening up shortly after being removed in the fourth inning Sunday.

"It didn't get any worse throughout the game, it was just a matter of being tight and sore, but nothing that was alarming at the time," Fister said.

Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said the strain affected Fister's follow-through and him finishing his pitch.

"It didn't bother him to push off, but it did bother him following through and finishing his pitch," Rand said. "So, that's what we've got to get him comfortable doing."

He lasted only 3 2/3 innings Sunday after giving up seven runs and walking three batters in a 7-5 loss to Baltimore. Six of the seven runs came with two outs.

"It’s still in one of those stages where it’s still tight, but I haven’t tried to stress it at all yet, so we’re just trying to take it slow," Fister said.

TIgers pitching coach Jeff Jones met with Fister on the mound Sunday in the second inning and Fister apparently told him he was OK. He echoed similar comments following the game.

"He said he was alright," Leyland said. "We checked in in the second inning and he was alright. That’s one of those Catch 22s, you know? So, we’ll just to wait and see how it plays out."

In the event Fister can't make his next start, it's unclear how the rotation will be rearranged or who would pitch in his place. The Tigers have an off day scheduled Monday.

"I don’t know. I can’t give you any details," Leyland said. "I can assure you that we will have a pitcher in his spot. Either him or somebody else and right now I can’t give you any information."
