Top of 5 ...Tigers go for the extra base and get caught - again. That could have been a big inning!

Bottom of 5 ...Porcello gives up a single and two walks, but manages to escape. Still, he once again was getting into trouble as his pitch count got higher. If Leyland is smart, he doesn't bring him out for the 6th.

4 hits including a HR and coming away with 1 run. :o

With Mauer going 1 for 4 so far tonight and Cabrera getting two hits already....batting Title is almost in the bag. HR crown is looking real good too now.

But then ...#44 for Miggy!!!

Verlander first MVP for a pitcher since 92. Miggy hitting for the first triple crown since 67. Coming within a couple of games of a world series and headed to the post season for a second straight year.

As frustrating as the Tigers have been this season, hopefully Tigers fans can appreciate this club at least a little before their next incoherent Leyland tirade. We have two of the best Tigers of all time playing in their prime and we'll long for these days when they aren't playing anymore.

I don't think any Tiger fan doesn't appreciate the great core they have in VMart, Prince, Miggy, Verlander, Max, and Fister. That is undoubtedly championship material if they can just fill in around it. What is frustrating is they played like a .500 team for most the season.ETA...AJax....a really impressive core.

Max had a bullpen session today and said he felt 100%. He said that he still had pain last tie but today he threw as hard as he could, and felt great. This is good news.
Given his injury, I'm more worried about how he feels tomorrow than today.Brigther news, 5 outs to go...

Everyone appreciates Cabrera and Verlander, no one appreciates ####ty error-plagued defense, a team that makes a guy with a 6 ERA look like Tom Seaver and players like Boesch who may go a week without a hit. But all is about to be forgiven, they achieved in the regular season exactly what they intended and that is having a shot to win the World Series.

You don't think any Tigers fans don't appreciate it? Really? There are hordes who aren't capable of seeing anything but what's wrong. And naturally they're usually wrong about what's wrong. Tigers fans are brutal. This year has certainly been frustrating. The offense, pitching and defense haven't come together in as many games as they did last year, and sometimes it's just as simple as that. But despite the bumpier road traveled this year, this team might be better suited to go the world series than the one a season ago. Our top four in the line-up is much healthier and dangerous. Last season, our strength throughout the year was guys down in the order but by the playoffs Avila was gassed and hurt, Martinez and Young were gimpy and Jackson was lost. In a series environment, and against a weaker Texas or NY team, I think the offense will produce more than last season.Starting pitching looks better to me assuming Scherzer returns to form.Bullpen and defense are much weaker--at least one of those two weaknesses need to turn into strengths to make the WS. It's certainly possible.

I'll say this, the talk radio crowd in Detroit is awful. Those who get their info from it, who quote it or who follow it. I can't listen to those guys when I'm there, they make a generally pessimistic fanbase angry. The dumb TV announcers we have don't help either, I watch the other teams announcers on extra innings while having the radio feed on. I'm usually very upbeat and optimistic but this year has been painful to watch. Avila leads the league in passed balls and steals allowed, they are way up there in errors and Valverde demonstrates how hard it always has to be.But again all is forgiven. They can beat anyone in the playoffs but just had to get there. I think most of the fans will be content with the possibilities.

Good year for the White Sox, they were the better team for most of the year. Came down to head to head, Tigers were 12-6 vs Chicago. I guess that's how the unbalanced schedule is supposed to work.
:yes:Good luck in the playoffs. Hope all of you Tiger fans enjoy it and have a good run. Well, all Tiger fans except for Greco, who already wished us Sox fans luck in the playoffs. ####### tease, that Greco.Oh, and teamramrod. Hope he chokes on a tool.

Tigers RHP Max Scherzer (shoulder) said he felt good after playing catch on Saturday and could be available to start the regular season finale against the Royals on Wednesday. Leyland said the team would be cautious with Scherzer, who missed his last start because of soreness in his deltoid.
I say he starts on Wednesday regardless of if they have clinched or not. He needs the game action and even if it's just three innings, it will benefit him for a possible playoff game 3 start. Gotta get one more though, I'd like the Tigers to do it on their own and having Porcello doing it would be nice in a tough season for him.
I was thinking pretty much the same thing on Max. They already have him on the scheduleWed, 10/3at Royals8:10pFS-D, MLB.TVScherzer (16-7)Mendoza (8-9)
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Tigers’ clinching of the AL Central on Monday night eliminates the question of whether right-hander Max Scherzer would start Game 162 Wednesday night with the season on the line. Manager Jim Leyland said over the weekend that Scherzer wouldn’t pitch Wednesday if the Tigers clinched the Central before then. However, that thinking might have changed. In a post-game interview on FSD Monday night, pitching coach Jeff Jones said Scherzer would pitch for a short time on Wednesday night. This would serve as a playoff tune-up for the right-hander, who would figure to be part of the four-man rotation for the playoffs. (Either Anibal Sanchez or Rick Porcello would appear to be out of the playoff rotation. Of those two, Sanchez has been pitching far better lately, notwithstanding Porcello’s win in the clincher Monday night.) The Tigers can use their remaining two regular-season games in Kansas City as they please to get ready for the playoffs. They can’t improve their seeding with any more wins. They are locked in as the No. 3 seed. The only postseason series for which they’ll have home-field advantage is the championship series against the wild-card team. Scherzer missed his last start on Friday because of weakness in his shoulder, a problem that first surfaced two weeks ago tonight. Scherzer has said on each of the last two days that he fully expected to be ready to pitch in the playoffs whether or not he pitched in the regular-season finale Wednesday. Scherzer was pleased with the between-starts bullpen session he threw Monday. “The last pitch I threw, I threw it as hard as I could,” Scherzer said. Leyland had planned that rookie Drew Smyly would start Wednesday night if A) the game meant something and Scherzer couldn’t pitch or B) if the Tigers had clinched. Leyland wanted to see how Scherzer felt today after Monday’s bullpen session before he made a decision on Scherzer’s availability for Wednesday night. If Scherzer is going to pitch for a short time Wednesday, there would be plenty of time for Smyly to get in some work in that game, too. Smyly could also work tonight in relief of Doug Fister. If Smyly is on the playoff roster, he could have an important role. He is a left-hander, and all of the starters will be right-handed. If the starter is knocked out early, Smyly could come in and have an advantage in facing a lineup that was loaded with left-handed hitters to face the right-handed starter. This strategy worked when Smyly shut down the left-handed-heavy Indians when he relieved Porcello in the fifth inning a few weeks ago. Smyly was in line for the win in that game until the Indians rallied against Jose Valverde for the win in the ninth.

Max will pitch one to three innings, no more than 40 pitches. I would not pitch him, but I understand the logic.

BTW.....Cabrera wins the batting crown as long as Trout does not get three more hits than Cabrera over the last two games. A few assumptions, but should hold up to most scenarios. Hamilton is the only real threat to over take Cabrera in the HR race. I can see someone tie Cabrera, but unlikely to pass. In really good shape to pull it off, but a couple more hits would really be nice.

woot.First time the tigers have made the playoffs in b2b seasons since 1935.a triple crown would be sweet to see.
The b2b playoffs surprised me!Nothing for Hamilton last night, so Miggy holds the lead in HRs.
they been pretty horrible for long stretches of their history. If they can somehow win a world series with this crew in next couple of seasons. 2006 through now will be considered the greatest stretch in club history.1982-1987 was a pretty sweet stretch of time.

Great news, must've felt good this morning. It's a glorified bullpen session to live batters, need to get him out there to get some confidence in the shoulder going into the playoffs.

Is it still considered a Triple Crown if Miggy and Hamilton end up tied in HRs but Miggy winning the batting and RBI title?

So who do we want the Tigers to play?

I think Texas is the best team - so my thought would be to play them in a 5 game series - not a 7 game.

But, another scenario is for Texas to win the next two games - get the best record - and then have NYY and BAL tie. Then they would have to play an extra game. That could be a nice benefit for the Tigers.

I think the best scenerio is the Balt and NY tie. None of these teams scare me. Tigers can beat any of them.

I'd like to avoid the AL West. The Yanks pitching has been much better lately, but we have had recent success against them. Baltimore's a great story, but I see them as one and done in a playoff series - just not enough starting pitching. Oakland's pitching and our poor play out west worries me, their bats have really heated up too. Texas has scuffled to the finish line, but top to bottom they have the best team in the league if they get all the pieces in place at the right time.Dream scenario - we draw the Yanks or the Orioles, the AL West wildcard team doesn't make it to the ALDS, then the other AL West team loses the ALDS. I think that's our best chance.

Agree with this. I'd prefer Baltimore but I think a one game playoff between those teams for the division (they won't use their aces but it is more grind), and then the A's and Rangers killing each other is the best scenario. Can't say that I care though, I think all the teams in the playoffs are tough. Avoiding the AL West in the ALDS probably best although I agree with Whoknew that Texas is more beatable in a five game series. But why want to play Texas at all? Maybe they get taken out in the wildcard game if the A's win the next two nights.
