Drama around the closer situation isn't going to go away any time soon for the tigers, Jimmy always been a one man closer
You are entering Wooder##### territory for baseball knowledge. Leyland used CBC approach for most of his time in Pittsburgh, employing as many as four closers in a year a couple of times. :bye:

Bob Kipper isn't walking through that door

What about Stan Belinda?

On Saturday McCarver said " Santiago is one of Leylands favorite players of all-time..and would play everyday if he could run"

So Leylands other favotires must be Don Kelly, Inge and Rayburn. Jimmy has a soft spot for crappy baseball players.

Why was Santiago playing again today? If they want to sit Peralta one would think it wouldn't be against a left hander.
I think it is part of Operation Light Fire Under Peralta's Fat ###.

Victor Martinez - DH - Tigers
Victor Martinez is out of Tuesday's lineup against the Blue Jays with a cut on his right thumb.
V-Mart required eight stitches after cutting his thumb on the bat rack, but the good news is that he's considered day-to-day. Andy Dirks will serve as the designated hitter Tuesday while Don Kelly will start in left field.
Seriously?

Batted .206, with 17 RBI's, a negative WAR and nothing special in the field while collecting $2.1 mil. What is not to love about that?

Yeah this sounds suspicious. I'm guessing it has something to do with clubhouse masturbation...

Please explain.

So we'll need a DM for the DH?

Nice outing all the way around today (well, except for Benoit being a little sloppy and the bottom of the batting order ...though Kelly gets a pass for his great catch).

Any stat on what innings pitchers give up their runs? Seems like Porcello just can`t get through the 5th or 6th inning.

2 outs in the 1st, patience at the plate wins a free bag to both Miggy and Prince. Miggy steals 3rd, as if you were expecting anything less. Victor hits a single to left. Voila........manufactured run. Who says this team can't play small ball? :IBTL:

Garcia takes over that job by the end of the month, right?
If Dirks fails they'll go to the awesomeness we know as Quentin Berry first (or maybe TUIASASOOOOOOOOPO!). Castellanos probably with the first shot for playing time from the farm, I suspect Garcia will be a September call-up once again unless he's just killing the ball in Erie OR if the Tigers have injuries to more than one OFer. But for now I think Garcia is probably the 8th OFer in the organization, but soon to be #3.

  • with 1/18th the schedule now played (where did the time go?) Tigers on pace to go 90-72, almost exactly the same total I saw from Vegas at the start of the year.

Good enough to finish 18 games back of the 108 win Kansas City Royals, and the second WC spot.

If Inge and Raburn are any yardstick, Dirks will have to bat .190 for about a year and a half before Leyland starts thinking about benching him.

I like the defensive moves the team made late in the game ...let's see if they do that when the lead isn't so large.

And: No errors yet for the team. Extrapolated out, that means an errorless season, which would be a little bit unusual.

There was a local radio show I was listening to this morning and chuckled a bit as they discussed whether Carlos Quentin would pause before charging Verlander, with Prince and Miggy bombs coming from east and west.

Prince and Miggy would just hug him and love him up......they are not fighters.

Dirks would charge from the outfield and take a swing. And miss.
worth the price of admission. Thank you. Now back to wiping the diet coke off my monitor.

Peace

So my daughter calls me to pick her up at a party..I was sound asleep I think it was around 2:20am. When backing out of the garage I turn the radio on and Villarreal is set to deliver. Next thing I hear is DD calling.."It is a well hit ball down the rightfield line.........then a whisper..gone." Price says "Can you believe it?? In all my years coming here I have never seen a right handed batter rip one right down the right field line that carried out like that"

Game over and back to 500

On a good note. Papa Grande had two Ks in an A game without a walk.

This bullpen isn't gonna last. I think a true closer rightens the ship, but whether that is internal or external is a different question. Valverde haters should be rooting for him, Rondon skeptics should embrace. Those two are probably our best hope and this comes from a Benoit guy.

Villarreal and Al Al should be shot ot of a cannon back to Toledo, both are awful. Prince Fielder is not awful, he's pretty much

Peralta HR was big yesterday. He has hit the ball well thus far. If he can hit .280 and 15 HR, he will have done his part. Have not watched enough to see if his defense has improved. You almost have to be at the field though to really see it.

Valverde looks pretty good right now. Valverde can`t possibly be as bad as his last few outings last season...can he? Something had to be wrong.

As a closer he was effective the last three years, I think 110 for 118 has to be one of the best rates in baseball.

He was a one pitch pitcher last year and I think it's safe to say that if his splitter is back, he'll be ok. If not he won't and this won't last long and the Tigers will have to go to Rondon or make a trade. I think they are gonna trade for bullpen help anyway, but having to trade for a closer would cost too much. Best scenario is Valverde and or Rondon is the answer and we trade for a guy that can help bridge.

If AJAX is going to strike out once every 10 ABs, look the f out.
!!!

What a great game again today ...top of the line-up just killing it, contributions throughout (Dirks with a 2-out ribbie!), Sanchez adding his own 3-hitter to the mix, and ...Porcello for the two-inning close!!!

Porcello to the bullpen? i know they were just skipping a start and giving the hurting relievers some rest, but it might not be the worst idea.

I'd give him a few more starts and then go to Smyly. Thing is I think Smyly sticks as a starter, so Rick better get his #### together soon. I'd like a lefty in the rotation...

Not surprised about Al, bummed Villareal had the velo drop - thought he may be legit as last year went on. Here's hoping Rondon gets a look in May, if he fails dial up Valverde, and if he fails - hello, trade market.

Really good article here

Of the below I'd rank them AJax 1, Avila 2, Scherzer 3 and Fister 4. Cabrera is really a "depends" because of the price tag and I rank Scherzer lower because he's probably going to be out of the team's price range. AJax is a must re-sign and it would be nice if they took care of that this offseason. Avila also, I think you can lock him up now for 5 years at a decent price. Luckily three of those four are under team control for three more years though so there is flexibility. VMart and Peralta should be let go, Infante depends on how he does this year.
