Really good article here

Of the below I'd rank them AJax 1, Avila 2, Scherzer 3 and Fister 4. Cabrera is really a "depends" because of the price tag and I rank Scherzer lower because he's probably going to be out of the team's price range. AJax is a must re-sign and it would be nice if they took care of that this offseason. Avila also, I think you can lock him up now for 5 years at a decent price. Luckily three of those four are under team control for three more years though so there is flexibility. VMart and Peralta should be let go, Infante depends on how he does this year.
I think that's all fair. Austin Jackson is a young, superstar. So you are right to want to tie him up. It is going to be tough to keep everyone together which is why you may see some trades in the near future.

Also - it'd be nice to see Fielder moved to DH full-time when VMart leaves and Cabrera moved to first with Castellanos at third.

Having said that - if Illitch is still alive, who knows? Maybe we will keep everyone.

Garcia takes over that job by the end of the month, right?
If Dirks fails they'll go to the awesomeness we know as Quentin Berry first (or maybe TUIASASOOOOOOOOPO!). Castellanos probably with the first shot for playing time from the farm, I suspect Garcia will be a September call-up once again unless he's just killing the ball in Erie OR if the Tigers have injuries to more than one OFer. But for now I think Garcia is probably the 8th OFer in the organization, but soon to be #3.
I hate to see Dirks open the season slowly because he probably has a shorter leash than any other starter. But I still think he has some time. He's taking a ton of walks, and his BABIP should regress in a positive direction. He should be ok.

But if he does need some time off, I think Tui gets first crack. He has stung the ball so far, and the only way to get Berry is to either send down a position player or send down Villareal and shift the balance of pitchers/batters. Of course, if it meant dropping Kelly to bring Berry i woudl be all for it. Not that Berry is any great shakes, but Kelly sucks.

And for the rest of the guys, I don't think Castellanos is close. He's starting slow and still learning the outfield. And Garcia has yet to play, though he will be in Toledo when he is ready to go, starting next to Berry and Castellanos.

Chicago Tribune had some stat lines on WAR since 2010. JV leads all pitchers (20ish WAR) ...all four (with Max, Fister, and Sanchez) in the top 18. Miggy leads all hitters (also just above 20) with Fielder at 19th. With all those players looking great - and Jackson and Hunter killing it - it makes for a really strong team. Just need a bullpen!

Get the 9th inning figured out and the dominos fall in line thereafter. Still plenty of time to figure it out. Division is weak enough and we're strong enough to play with the chess pieces for a couple of months. This year > future years, but with Illitch on the verge of his meeting with St. Peter, the contracts currently out there, and the ones pending in the next couple of years we really can't afford to bring on a guy inked for > 2 years or trade any of our top prospects.

If it were me. In the next couple of weeks, I would call up Mr. potato and Rondon. Send Villareal down and maybe if possible put Dotel on the 14 day DL. Use Rondon as the setup guy on a short lease and give the Potato a chance to win his job back.

Pirates minor leaguer Jerry Sands has been suspended one game for going into the stands at last night's Indianapolis-Toledo game. The Mud Hens fans were heckling and throwing stuff (one source says peanuts, another says beer) at Sands' teammate Brandon Inge.

I hope you all have your alibis in order.

Wow. What a job by the bullpen. That easily erases one of the three games they have blown. It is also great our 2 thru 4 starters can stand toe to toe with anyone's ace.

Alibi? I might lie and say it was me.

WOW, indeed! Tough couple'a days for Prince, though. How about Dirks coming through and driving in the first run?

What's Inge's alibi for all these years of screwing teams out of millions of dollars?

The past two years Prince has 192 walks and 190 K's, pretty amazing for a guy with that kind of swing. He's 10/16 so far this year and I think his K's will go up some with VMART behind him and seeing more pitches, but his other numbers will go up also. I think he's a 40/120 guy this year.

>Old Brown Eye stared down King Felix last night. No fear. "I've got your 8 innings and 12 K's right here."
Congrats on defeating that Seattle offensive juggernaut!!

:lmao: :lmao:
You serious? Seattle is improved over last year's team......a team that won 9 out of 19 h2h matchups against your beloved Rangers. A team that your "ace" has a career 6.65 ERA against.

With some of the most important pieces on your team having long injury histories, you should really cap the bravado.

ETA: Rangers are 2-2 against Seattle h2h so far this year. Total runs scored in that series?.....11 Texas, 11 Seattle. How about that Texas offensive juggernaut!!

You're one of the most defensive people I've ever seen on these boards.

I'm a little embarrassed now because I know absolutely nothing about you.

Seattle is 28th in Avg, 27th in OBP and 27th in SLG. I'm just saying tap the brakes on a 14 inning win in which your team struck out more than they did.

But thanks for knowing as much as you do about the Rangers. Appreciate ya.

I said, and believe that Seattle is improved over last year. Last night Felix was on the mound, one of the best in the business, and Max matched him pitch for pitch. It's not like the Tigers are going to score 8 runs each game.....it doesn't work that way. Different guys come up big....last night is was Max and the bullpen....worth getting excited about in the Detroit thread.

I looked up the Rangers record vs Seattle last year and this because it didn't seem like Texas blew them out last year and I definitely remember the Mariners beating the crap out of Yu because he was my fantasy pitcher.

Think it's funny a Ranger fan rips Tiger fans because of victories over Seattle when the Mariners seem to do pretty well giving Texas all they want and more.

Scherzer has 30 K and 4 BB in 19 IP. That's crazy good, especially considering he's generally terrible in April/May before catching fire later in the season.

Good point! Scary to think what happens if he stays strong all year!

Scary how good the top 4 starters are. Verlander pitching well today, but has thrown 71 pitches through 4. May only get through 7 innings at that pace.

I noticed the pitch count after 4 innings as well ...and feared they might stretch JV too long due to the heavy bullpen usage last night. On a different day, maybe they pull him after six.

Twice now (along with the NY game) that JV has had 0 run support!

I know it's early but I already hate this season.
I like this season. Yeah, they should have a couple more wins. I can excuse yesterday after the marathon game they had the night before. Won the first two series on the road, so can't really complain.

Bullpens don't matter
When you score Zero runs, bullpens aren't the problem. The Tigers have not been able to buy runs the last couple of games. This game was over when Prince grounded into a bases loaded double play when the game was still in reach. That said, I think both Rondon and Valverde need to be called up.

Gotta go to Smyly now as the #5 starter, tough when you don't even give your team a chance.

Three runs the last four days, team is too streaky for my liking.

The Sanchez signing is looking pretty good right now. The more I watch him pitch the more I like the way he competes. Porcello would have been #4.

I don't see how this doesn't happen, but then again this team ran Valverde out there as closer for all of 2012.
I thought Smyly had the advantage going into spring training, but Porcello earned the spot with a very strong spring. Smyly has been a much better pitcher thus far in the season, so giving Smyly a shot is pretty reasonable. Valverde deserved to be run out of town. His two worst outings of the season were in the playoffs and his performance last year had tailed off. Something was off with him. Not sure if he has it fixed yet, but they could use Valverde if he does get it figured out.

It was a good signing, except it is going to make resigning Max and Fister more difficult. Cubs pushed the price tag a bit too high. But it was a good signing.

The way Max is pitching there is no way they will be able to afford him. Fister is signed through '15, no real rush there or even a reason to worry about it.

Tigers pitchers have given up 7 hits and what should be 3 unearned runs through 12 innings today (The Pujols doube was a joke, should have been E-5). Left the bases loaded three times, no clutch hitting and terrible base running by Infante. Glad Lloyd is still employed, makes for another fun year!!!

you make at point DD about the pujols double etc., but the bottom line is coke gave up the big one, tigers didn't want to spend the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on Rafael Soriano, but he has 6 saves vs coke and he leads the tigers with 1. I have a hard time understanding teams that will spend all the money to get great players, but then get cheap at the end for the final player to win it all. Go big or go home when you spending this kind of money. The tigers should walk away with the central(and I think they can), I know someone will compare cokes era vs Soriano, but is all about saves or just win baby. I wish the tigers well, but just don't understand when you so close why you don't go all in.
