***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (2 Viewers)

Really surprised they haven't called this game.
Yeah, it is pretty bad. I think they were saying it was suppose to clear up in 20 minutes, but that was 20 minutes ago. It is geting worse. But the Tigers hitters seem to love the rain. C A B R E R A ! ! ! !

I hope Garcia gets healthy soon and gets called up. We need to get better production out of the LF spot. Seems to be the sole weak spot in the lineup outside of catcher.

Tuiasosopo is hitting .320. If we need anything in left it would be a left handed hitter. But I think Dirks will hit better.

Sweep! Twins at home and then to Houston this week, good chance to get nice and clear of .500.

Garcia is still a ways off from being an everyday major league player. Until that day comes, he should be playing in Erie or Toledo.

One thing that hardly gets mentioned anymore is Cabreras defense at 3B. Miggy has good hands and a great arm. I know his range is not the best but he is playing much better defense that most thought he ever could. Seems like he is enjoying it too.

Fully expect to lose the series at home vs. the Twins.
Of course.....Does Minny and KC play as aggressive against every other team as they do the Tigers? Just seems like they play the Tigers like they have nothing to lose..running all over the place and taking chances.

What's amazing is the team has only, what, 6 errors to date? lol Maybe they're just not getting to balls, but still ...

Tiger pitchers piling up the Ks! Nice game for Dirks (!), and a big hit for Prince. JV up next!!

KC getting whomped, so it's all good. (Raburn on fire for the Tribe! :o )

Anyone else wanna jump on the Alex Avila = Brandon Inge 2.0 bandwagon?

I am wondering if 2011 was an aberration and he is really a .235 avg and 10 HR kind of guy.

Season isnt as much fun without someone to complain about on a daily basis.

Yeah this is an ongoing conversation which I mentioned earlier. I think the best thing to do is expect very little, .235 and 12-15 HRs. Keep in mind though that Avila was 9th and 8th the past two years in the fielding bible for MLB catchers and was also a gold glove finalist the past two years. Getting production like 2011 out of your catcher is terrific but he was terrible in 2010 and last year and looks iffy this year at the plate. He is a valuable player behind the plate though so there is some comfort there.

And if there are teams that can survive a crap bat at C, I'm pretty sure the Tigers are one of them

All Alex needs to do is relax...swing...and let his bat work.

His main job is what he does with this staff...

Sorely overlooked.

Peace

What the greater fanbase ignores about Avila is that the guy takes a walk like nobodies business. He's at 12.6% BB% for his career, and led the team last year. So even though his average and power stunk, he had a very good OBP and was an above average major league hitter. He's been bad this year, but there is most definitely hope. He's going to walk more and the balls he hits will start to drop in.

The worst is those mlive neanderthals that think Pena should be the starter.

Tigers w/o Papa Grande. 9 - 9

Tigers w Papa Grande. 6 - 1

Obviously, there were some cold bats on that road trip and the bats have heated up at home, but the bullpen is so much better with everyone in a role they are comfortable in. When nearly half of your losses were blown saves, there are serious issues.

Interesting Tidbit:  Tigers pitchers struck out 10 - reaching that mark for the fifth straight game. That equals the longest streak by an American League team since at least 1921. The major league record since then is eight games by the Milwaukee Brewers last August, according to STATS.

Doc, I thought this was the type of player AA was projected to be when he was drafted. A solid defensive catcher who works well with the staff. A .250 or so hitter with a little pop at times. I don`t think he was ever projected to do what he did two years ago and probably will not do it again.

Griping a little about Avila being the catcher tells me there is very little to gripe about right now. Starters have been electric and the top of the order has done exactly what they are supposed to do. This team is solid and really seems to enjoy playing in Comerica.

Can we start worrying about V-Mart yet? Slugging less than everyone else in the starting lineup. Driving in 11% of the baserunners in front of him. Miggy is being Miggy and Prince is being Prince and the team is first in BA and OBP, but at what point do you move him down in the lineup?

Haven't seen more than a couple of ABs but I'm holding and hoping for the best. His .247 BABIP is way below his norms. Strikeouts and FB/GB/LD numbers seem to be more or less in line with what he's done in the past. 100 PAs is a small sample size, he's old and rusty and it's been cold and yada, yada, yada.

The lack of power is concerning but I think he'll come around (but not back to Cleveland production levels).

He'll be fine, a whole year off takes its toll and there really isn't a better option to hit fifth right now.

Rondon could be another 2006 Zumaya by the end of the year, but he really has to stop walking so many guys. You can't get behind in every count against MLB hitters, you just can't make a living that way. He has the stuff to overcome mistakes but not if he's not throwing strikes, guys are just walking up there and standing.

They are gonna have to make a trade for another reliever. Doesn't have to be a closer even if Valverde falters, but they need someone else. Dotel seems one pitch away from being done, I think they need him healthy to go forward as is. I'd leave Rondon up though, he needs to learn from his mistakes in low leverage or medium leverage spots. Smyly gives them a lot of flexibility in tie games late too, just put him in until the game isn't tied anymore to be honest. He's the best pitcher in the bullpen right now.

I'm just waiting for the first double intentional walk to Miggy and Prince to get to V-Mart.

Yup, a nice outing for Porcello ..couple bad pitches. Tigers extend yesterday's new league record of striking out 10 or more ...now at seven straight games. Heading into the 11th ...let's not waste this one (not helping that our guys are striking out even more than they are).

eta: And if someone saw the game, please tell me sending Tui home in the top of 11 was the right call. Walk, hit, hit would have loaded the bases on a pitcher not in a good rhythm.

Something needs to be done about Porcello.
I know it's the Astros, but he pitched a great game tonight. If he gives the Tigers a chance to win, he's worthy of keeping that starting job.
I posted after the first two innings. It looked like another developing train wreck was coming against a crappy team. It is great to have Smyly in the bullpen, so I agree if Porcello can at least keep his starts competitive, it will be OK. But damn, he has sucked in nearly every outing. Maybe he can build off of this game and at least be respectable. But if he goes back to sucking the next couple of starts, I would seriously think about turning to Smyly.

How about the first double intentional walk to Miggy and Prince to get to Don Freaking Kelly? How did that work out for the Lastros?

Whew! AJax contributed when it was needed ...Kelly getting some hits. Putkonen (and all the relievers) very solid.

A good win.

7 innings, just a couple walks and a couple of hits. Don't get much better than that. On top of that, the bullpen was not depleted for tonight. Still have Al-Al and Big Papa fresh and ready if needed for tonight.

Smyly, too! See if Fister can keep it going tonight.

Cabrera passed 1,000 hits as a Tiger. He's only 82 behind Inge. :P
