***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (4 Viewers)

I like Avila also and he makes the team better because he's good defensively. If he can hit at the bottom of the order it just makes them so much tougher.

Nice effort by Fister tonight.

It is great to see these games finished out. Nothing more disgusting than seeing a brilliantly pitched game blown in the 9th.

Mad Max loving the big leads!!!
Mad Max not needing the big lead! With the odd exception of JV, lots of great work by our starting pitchers over the past week. Nice to see Miggy back (and back strong) as well.

Cabrera being throw out on an 0-2 count for mumbling something to himself? Chad Fairchild should be suspended for that, horrendous. Leyland has been thrown out twice this year, both by Fairchild and he throws Miggy out in the middle of the at bat? WTF?

Best team in baseball and it isn't close IMO
Bullpen is extremely thin and inexperienced

Verlander is not pitching well

Peralta is facing potential suspension

They are a long ways from being crowned World Champs.
Then again ...

Smyly and Benoit have been extremely reliable

The other four starters have been consistently putting up quality starts

Perez is proving to be a very capable addition to the team

Rumors that Texas would like to move Nathan, wondering if any interest from the tigers
I'd be surprised if they were because a) I'm sure Texas would ask for a lot (it was reported on twitter they want an established hitter); and 2) I'm not sure either of those teams wants to make a trade that will help the other.

Verlander is the best 5th starter in MLB..Benoit is turning into a stud closer..Smyley can do 6th-7th-8th or whatever is needed. Dotlel will be coming back soon.,Rondon is coming on and the Tigers will keep all their prospects. Let it ride...

That's optimistic. He is going to throw to live batters for the first time in months on Tuesday, let's see how that goes before we pencil him in for the 7th.

Valverde thought he'd be back in two weeks, I'd be surprised if he's ever back. I really hope he isn't; let's move on.

I would be shocked if Valverde ever came back. I can't even believe Leyland is that loyal, but he always surprises me. Bonderman will be nothing more than a right-handed Coke. Might give you a few good outings here and there, but is not someone you will be able to count on. I am not optimist about Dotel either. I have been a huge fan of Smyly for a couple of years, and if anything I think he is under utilized. Bonoit has shown to be a very effective closer. Rondon is a wild card still. Porcello will be a good for long relief in the playoffs. Just one more good arm, perferablly a lefty, for the bullpen is needed for the playoffs to compete against the big boys.

Can`t see Valverde returning. If he did what role would he have? No way he can ever be trusted to close again...can he? Hopefully Bondo can fill Dotels role..or Dotel can fill Dotels role. I would like to see Benoit stay as closer...he is throwing strikes and striking guys out. Plus it looks like he is really confident in the role now.

Tigers trade for Jose Veras. Had to give up Danry Vasquez and PTBNL.

Vasquez is really young - but supposed to be a pretty good prospect. But - we have a chance to win this year and needed another arm. Seems like a reasonable deal.

It does seem like a pretty good move. Wonder what role they have in mind?

Also is Benoit an UFA at the end of the season? Thought he signed a 3 year deal when he came to Detroit.

He did. Since this is is third year, it makes sense doesn't it?

Tigers now have an established closer in-house, and an up-and-comer in Rondon for possible closer duties in 2014.

Just wondering if they extended him or had a team option for a 4th year. Keep hearing about Max and Peraltas contract situation but never hear anything about Benoit.

8th inning. Fill-in closer when Benoit needs the day off. Leyland doesn't use him 3 days in a row and I doubt he'd use him 4 times in 5 days either.

"Veras, 32, brings a 2.93 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 44 strikeouts and 14 walks in 43 innings for the Astros"

I like the sound of all that!

eta: More from the mlb posting -

Tigers fans might remember Veras for the go-ahead home run Alex Avila hit off of him in the ninth inning May 3 in Houston. Veras has thrived since then, allowing 17 hits over 31 innings, with 10 walks, 30 strikeouts and a .162 opponents' batting average.

For the season, right-handed hitters are batting just .162 (12-for-75) against Veras, with two home runs, eight walks and 30 strikeouts. Left-handed batters are hitting him at a .224 clip (17-for-76).

Veras grew into a high-strikeout reliever in a career that began with the Yankees and took him to Cleveland, Miami, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee. In Houston, he struck big by winning the closer's job, lowering his walk rate and turning in some of the best numbers of his career.

At age 32, Veras filled the role of a good veteran closer on a young, rebuilding team. And on a trade market where bigger names have been drawing heavy interest and high demands, he became the logical way for Dombrowski to address a bullpen that has been short one veteran right-hander for most of the year.

Veras is under contract for $1.85 million this season with a $3.25 million club option for next year. A strong finish could put him in position to play a major role in Detroit's bullpen in 2014.

Peralta is not only leading the league for shortstops in fielding percentage, but he is 4th in the league in fielding chances, indicating he is getting to a lot more balls than usual. He is having a great year defensively too. Hopefully he can avoid suspension.

Speaking of stats, I saw that VMart led the AL in hits in July (37 ..four more than the next player). Porcello went 4-0, and Fister 3-0, for the month.

I believe less and less in defensive stats by the day, anyone who has watched more than 10 games of these guys can see Peralta doesn't get to anything unless it's hit within 3' of him.

Well, jon is using the stats wrong. Doesn't help.

The number of chances doesn't mean he is getting to more balls, it just means teams are hitting a lot of balls to shortstop.

Peralta's range rating is below average at -2.3 (average is 0). But, as always, if it's hit to him he is extremely dependable so his overall SS defense is above average by UZR, to the tune of 1.9 UZR/150.

and we don't have an MVP candidate because Mike Trout's WAR is better....

Peace
Max will make it three different Tigers in three consecutive years.
Dude...Bryce Harper's hair is at least 3 WAR above Max alone, get real brohan.

peace

I expect some outrage from the faithful for trading Garcia, because people seem to like him, but if that's all we gave up I'm THRILLED with this deal. Iglesias isn't a finished product, but shortstops with his skills at his age with that many years of control are gems. Without Peralta we'd be utterly ####ed, but I'd make that deal in a heartbeat even if Peralta was in the clear.

I agree. I would trade Garcia for Iglesias straight up and be quite happy about it.

Garcia was blocked at least until Hunter leaves and the Tigers will have to find a LH bat to play a corner when that happens. Castellanos in LF, AJAX in center and then a LH bat in RF. I like garcia, go back and look at my scouting report of him last year. I think he's gonna be a good every day player and he's a plus OFer. The franchise has no SS in house though outside Perez who is better at 2B, and Iglesias is under team control through 2018.

People are assuming this is a reaction to Peralta possibly being suspended, but it is also insurance for Infante who was killed by Colby ####### Rasmus.

Scouting Report: Elite defensive skills highlighted by extremely fluid hands and soft glove. Excellent instincts and anticipation produces his well above-average range. Will get to balls that most, if not all, will not. Plus, accurate arm. Adept at throwing on the move and has outstanding body control. Future perennial Gold Glove shortstop. Grades as an "80" defensively. Can also play second and third base more than adequately. Major-league ready in the field. Plus bat speed accented by quick wrists. Low maintenance, compact swing. Little lower body in swing mechanics. Pulls ball hard, but struggles driving the ball the other way. Minimal power projection. Can evolve into a solid-average hitter for batting average and show doubles power as he matures. Small frame with not much more room to pack on muscle. Extremely impatient approach. Making strides and improving with understanding of his strike zone, but inexperienced professionally and very age advanced. Neglects to cover outer third of plate with eyes. Struggles staying back against breaking balls. Must improve with handling of off-speed stuff to hit consistently at big-league level. Above-average speed. Projects as #9 hitter in first division team's lineup, with ceiling of #2 hitter as he approaches his late-20s. Due to advanced defensive skills will most likely learn to hit at the major-league level and slowly ramp into becoming more proficient at the plate over the course of big-league career.
I don't get the hate on him as far as his hitting either, guy has hit at every level. Looks like he had some trouble when he first went to AAA and then last year when he went to Boston, but he's hit otherwise. Several +.300 stints and he has a .785 OPS in 215 ABs with Boston this year. WTF do people want? I don't expect we just traded for the next Jeter here but he seems to be a guy who has adjusted at every level and will only get better.
