I don't care about his average, but I lubs me some Avila just from a grittiness standpoint.

Mad Max not needing the big lead! With the odd exception of JV, lots of great work by our starting pitchers over the past week. Nice to see Miggy back (and back strong) as well.Da Guru said:Mad Max loving the big leads!!!

Verlander is not pitching well
Peralta is facing potential suspension
They are a long ways from being crowned World Champs.
I'd be surprised if they were because a) I'm sure Texas would ask for a lot (it was reported on twitter they want an established hitter); and 2) I'm not sure either of those teams wants to make a trade that will help the other.Rumors that Texas would like to move Nathan, wondering if any interest from the tigers
Verlander is the best 5th starter in MLB..Benoit is turning into a stud closer..Smyley can do 6th-7th-8th or whatever is needed. Dotlel will be coming back soon.,Rondon is coming on and the Tigers will keep all their prospects. Let it ride...Bullpen is extremely thin and inexperiencedBest team in baseball and it isn't close IMO

That's optimistic. He is going to throw to live batters for the first time in months on Tuesday, let's see how that goes before we pencil him in for the 7th.Verlander is the best 5th starter in MLB..Benoit is turning into a stud closer..Smyley can do 6th-7th-8th or whatever is needed. Can`t see Valverde returning. If he did what role would he have? No way he can ever be trusted to close again...can he? Hopefully Bondo can fill Dotels role..or Dotel can fill Dotels role. I would like to see Benoit stay as closer...he is throwing strikes and striking guys out. Plus it looks like he is really confident in the role now.valverde at Toledo:

Valverde thought he'd be back in two weeks, I'd be surprised if he's ever back. I really hope he isn't; let's move on.
It does seem like a pretty good move. Wonder what role they have in mind?Tigers trade for Jose Veras. Had to give up Danry Vasquez and PTBNL.
Vasquez is really young - but supposed to be a pretty good prospect. But - we have a chance to win this year and needed another arm. Seems like a reasonable deal.
He did. Since this is is third year, it makes sense doesn't it?It does seem like a pretty good move. Wonder what role they have in mind?Tigers trade for Jose Veras. Had to give up Danry Vasquez and PTBNL.

Also is Benoit an UFA at the end of the season? Thought he signed a 3 year deal when he came to Detroit.
Big Potatoes have many eyes to cry from.Somewhere near Toledo, Jose Valverde weeps.
Just wondering if they extended him or had a team option for a 4th year. Keep hearing about Max and Peraltas contract situation but never hear anything about Benoit. He did. 8th inning. Fill-in closer when Benoit needs the day off. Leyland doesn't use him 3 days in a row and I doubt he'd use him 4 times in 5 days either. It does seem like a pretty good move. Wonder what role they have in mind?Tigers trade for Jose Veras. Had to give up Danry Vasquez and PTBNL.

I think Jair's going to get a look too.Bullpen in September if Dotel can return healthy:

They have a $3.5MM club option for next year. So if he's good, they may pick that up.versa a pure rental?
good move, like it, no reason to panic and trade Nick or Garcia
Even if he isn't great, that's a pretty good price for a guy who can potentially close. He'll be back in the fold next year you'd think. They have a $3.5MM club option for next year. So if he's good, they may pick that up.versa a pure rental?

I believe less and less in defensive stats by the day, anyone who has watched more than 10 games of these guys can see Peralta doesn't get to anything unless it's hit within 3' of him.Peralta is not only leading the league for shortstops in fielding percentage, but he is 4th in the league in fielding chances, indicating he is getting to a lot more balls than usual. He is having a great year defensively too. Hopefully he can avoid suspension.

I agree. I would trade Garcia for Iglesias straight up and be quite happy about it.I expect some outrage from the faithful for trading Garcia, because people seem to like him, but if that's all we gave up I'm THRILLED with this deal. Iglesias isn't a finished product, but shortstops with his skills at his age with that many years of control are gems. Without Peralta we'd be utterly ####ed, but I'd make that deal in a heartbeat even if Peralta was in the clear.
Garcia was blocked at least until Hunter leaves and the Tigers will have to find a LH bat to play a corner when that happens. Castellanos in LF, AJAX in center and then a LH bat in RF. I like garcia, go back and look at my scouting report of him last year. I think he's gonna be a good every day player and he's a plus OFer. The franchise has no SS in house though outside Perez who is better at 2B, and Iglesias is under team control through 2018.I agree. I don't get the hate on him as far as his hitting either, guy has hit at every level. Looks like he had some trouble when he first went to AAA and then last year when he went to Boston, but he's hit otherwise. Several +.300 stints and he has a .785 OPS in 215 ABs with Boston this year. WTF do people want? I don't expect we just traded for the next Jeter here but he seems to be a guy who has adjusted at every level and will only get better.Scouting Report: Elite defensive skills highlighted by extremely fluid hands and soft glove. Excellent instincts and anticipation produces his well above-average range. Will get to balls that most, if not all, will not. Plus, accurate arm. Adept at throwing on the move and has outstanding body control. Future perennial Gold Glove shortstop. Grades as an "80" defensively. Can also play second and third base more than adequately. Major-league ready in the field. Plus bat speed accented by quick wrists. Low maintenance, compact swing. Little lower body in swing mechanics. Pulls ball hard, but struggles driving the ball the other way. Minimal power projection. Can evolve into a solid-average hitter for batting average and show doubles power as he matures. Small frame with not much more room to pack on muscle. Extremely impatient approach. Making strides and improving with understanding of his strike zone, but inexperienced professionally and very age advanced. Neglects to cover outer third of plate with eyes. Struggles staying back against breaking balls. Must improve with handling of off-speed stuff to hit consistently at big-league level. Above-average speed. Projects as #9 hitter in first division team's lineup, with ceiling of #2 hitter as he approaches his late-20s. Due to advanced defensive skills will most likely learn to hit at the major-league level and slowly ramp into becoming more proficient at the plate over the course of big-league career.
UpdateTomorrow's game (7/31) at 1:05... who's in?
I think he is going to be a nice pickup for you guys, but to say he has hit at every level is a stretch. In 916 PA, over 222 Games in AAA he has hit 244/296/292I don't get the hate on him as far as his hitting either, guy has hit at every level.
