Officiating in the Saints game? (1 Viewer)

I'm a Saint fan who likes to read opposing team message boards and was shocked at the amount of whining about the refs. Even though I'm a Saints fan, I can admit when the calls go their way, I just didn't see it this time. I don't remember any controversial calls exept maybe the illegal contact, but replays showed clear contact about 8 yards downfield. A bit ticky-tacky sure, but still the right call. Also, the false start on 4th down was obviously a false start.

So, are Eagles fans just cry babies or am I missing something?

I guess you didn't see Jamaal Brown holding on Reggie Bush's TD? I guess you didn't see him hold on almost every play?

Are Eagles fans going to complain about the officiating? Absolutely. 99 percent of losing teams in the NFL see their fans complain.

The illegal contact happen a fraction of a second before the sack. It had no bearing on the play. But even that call was legitimate. It just looks bad on TV.

Other than that, it was a well officiated game IMHO.

If I recall correctly, Jammal got stood up causing Bush to change direction. I don't remember any holding but I could be wrong.

he had his arm extended with a clear grab of a jersey. enjoy reggie bush. he's sickeningly fun to watch.

Out of curiousity, are you a Eagles fan? I assume you're not but figured I'd ask. As for holding, I usually don't worry about it one way or another. I take Madden's word for it saying there is holding on every play, so I leave that alone when I complain, whether it hurt or helped the Saints.

Holding calls are a joke on linemen anyway. In the colts game, within 3 plays of each other, Ogden gets beat by Freeney and absolutely tackles him, no call. This was on the play where the Colts intercepted the ball but were called, rightly so, for Illegal contact.

Then 3 plays later, Freeney tries a spin move and Ogden uses Freeney's momentum against him and slams Freeney to the ground legally, a holding call.

It was just bad officiating both ways.

I had no rooting stake in the game either way. Didn't see anything that looked like game-changing officiating to me.

The biggest call was the false start on the Eagles' last drive. I've heard a lot of Philadelphia fans complaining about that one. But half the people I was watching the game with said "false start" out loud before the announcers even recognized it. I thought it was pretty obvious.

People are so invested in their teams that it's impossible for them to look at officiating impartially. Like the way a stadium erupts in boos when there's a call against the home team, regardless of how obvious the call is. It's just so difficult to judge officiating separately from your own rooting interest.

I'm an Eagles fan. The officiating was fine.

The only gripe I remotely had was a spot on a Brian Westbrook run towards the end of the game. It clearly looked like a first down. Brian Westbrook got up and the ref moved the ball back a yard. Westbrook looked angry and pointed up to where he was and that was it. The Eagles had yet ANOTHER series of 3 and outs, and kicked their last FG.

But that didn't cost the Eagles the game. The Saints were better. I felt MUCH better than the score indicated. I think the Eagles have been pretty lucky thus far - and lucky to have beaten the Giants. Let's face it, the Saints won most every stat of the game. The Eagles never really sustained drives. It was all the BIG PLAY.

Nope, Saints won fairly. They deserved it. I hope they make it to the Superbowl. Congrats.

Eagles fan here...

There were two calls in the game that got me fired up.

#1 - Reggie Bush's TD there was an obvious hold and I was shocked it wasnt called

#2 - Westbrooks 1st down at the 2, it was clearly a first

However calls like this happen all the time in games and you are expected to over come them. The Eagles lost because of their inability to stop the run and to not commit penalties themselves.

Class post! I watched the game and felt the officiating was just fine. There were a lot of no-calls on both sides and I was OK with that since refs have seemed to be very foul prone lately. It is refreshing to see an officiating crew let the players play. That 4th down call at the end was obvious, and sour grapes is all it is if there are really a lot of people complaining about that one. I would be complaining a lot more about the calls the coach made. Punting on 4th down and passing so much on running downs was not a solid game plan. The Eagles proved me wrong though by making it to the second round. That was quite an accomplishment! They should be proud of their team, they really played hard since McNabb went down.

Diehard Eagles fan here. I thought the officiating was fine. The false start was obviously a false start but I agree on the bad spot on the 2 yard line. I was more pissed at the whoever made the stupid mistake. But overall, I thought it was a great game by both teams.

On a tangent, the "worst call" of the game was Andy's decision to punt on 4th and 15 with under 2 minutes left, when your run D is playing like crap, and you got 15 yards on the previous play. WHAT.. THE... HELL...

Seriously. Terrible call. I still believe the Saints would have found a way to win... but it was nice of Andy to give it up like that.

And you JUST made a 15 yard pass that got called back. AND you have 4th down history heroics in you r recent playoff past. One of the Westbrook spots, dunno if it's THE spot in question, where he thought he got more yards is clearly backed up with replay that his knee went down 2 yards shy of the first down.Holding calls, I can't say I watched close enough to see how the non-calls were but I did see plenty of jersey grab and choke holds from both sides. But I couldn't tell you if the non calls were slanted greatly to one side.Either way, I didn't feel the refs were bad at all. Sure there were some marginal calls but that happens every game. And I certainly didn't think it was bad enough to get some of the huge reactions here about NFL conspiracies and blatant cheating. Of course I find it difficult to listen to any arguments when the posters insist on complaining about a false start.

If the officials had been capable of turning McAllister into a human pinball, I'd see the argument. All the Eagles had to do to win was tackle one guy all night. Never happened.

:lmao: As an Eagles fan, I agree. The Saints were the better team last night.

I hope the Saints go to the Super Bowl. It is a great story.

The biggest call in any game yesterday imo was the wrong ruling that Ed Reed stepped out of bounds on the INT before lateralling the ball to his teamate. If the refs don't incorrectly blow the whistle there, you have a DB with 2 blockers and plenty of running room....could've easily been a pick six that won the game for the Ravens.

But I'm not complaining of course

that's normal. Holding for linemen has always been about getting caught. There's plenty of stories of dirty things that go on "in the trenches" in previous eras, I'm sure some stuff still happens that we don't see.

With all the complaining that players do for calls on the field, especially when the call was blatantly correct, I can't believe the lack of reaction from the Ravens on that play. Obvioulsy a bad early whistle but both Ravens on the play were very blase about the whole deal. It was weird.

FWIW - Diehard eagles fan and i didnt see anything wrong with the officiating. I saw a couple of p*** poor coaching efforts from both HC's, but the officials were fine IMO.

As for the holding, you could call that on every play in the NFL.

I think the level of whining about offiicating has gotten ridiculous. There are so many calls during a football game and the officials get the vasy majority right. Most of the calls that people complain about are correct according to the rules or at least close enough that they could be called either way. The number of calls they flat-out get wrong are really few in number.

Complaining about a bad call here and there is fine but when people use that as the reason their team lost they have crossed over into being crybabies.

:football: That goes for players too, as far as I'm concerned. I get a little tired of seeing wide receivers throw their hands in the air complaining for a penalty every time they don't catch a ball. Would love to see that turned into an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Makes them all look like whiny tools.

The only question I had about the officiating was the lack of booth reviews in the under two minute period. There were some really tight moments for both teams, and the call wasn't made. In fact, both coaches called time outs just to see if Mike Carey could get something reviewed.

Eagle fans always cry when they lose .. this is nothing new

the EAgles were one of the worst playoff teams anyways ....

Best part of the game was the cute blond with the "### da Eagles" shirt...
that was sweet ..... I wish I had one of those.
I seen that too, that was classic. I was just surprised that the producers did not catch that before it was shown. cool shirt
Because it was shown on purpose. Not only for the context of the shirt, but also for the contits...errr contents.

There's holding on every down in the NFL, sometimes its called sometimes its not. I'm absolutely positive there were plays that philly held on but didnt get called and im certain of the same for the saints. I thought the game was pretty fairly called and i cant think of any calls that i thought were controversial or ridiculous, non calls either for that matter. I honestly thought the hail mary should have been reviewed, but it was a bang-bang play so i understand the call
