ohh my.....kevin jones hurt again (1 Viewer)

"Kevin Jones, the first-round pick of the Lions in 2004, once looked headed for stardom.

Instead, he's battled injuries for the better part of his career before settling into a backup role in Chicago last season.

On Thursday night, Jones suffered another potentially devastating injury. It's unclear how serious it is, but Jones stayed down for five minutes after hurting his ankle. He was eventually carted off the field.

If Jones is out for a while, it could allow long-time Bears running back "The Other" Adrian Peterson to make the team and back up Matt Forte.

Forte accounted for a greater percentage of his team's offense than any player in the league last year, and now he might be asked to carry a heavy load again."

Source: Running back Kevin Jones has torn ankle ligament

By Brad Biggs

on September 4, 2009 3:05 PM

Running back Kevin Jones suffered a torn ligament in his left ankle in the first quarter of Thursday night's game at Soldier Field.

Jones has been informed that he will require surgery to repair the injury, and the rehabilitation process will take up to 10 months.

This means the veteran will be out for this season.

Sad news for Bears fans. A healthy KJ would have really kept Forte fresh throughout the season, imo.

I wonder how this will change fortes projections?
I'm thinking it goes back to last year when he led the league in touches. If he doesn't go up in draft, it should help the doubters be more comfortable with his ADP. He's Cutlers best receiver too, they have no problem lining up Forte wide as well.

If Forte gets injured, the Bears would likely use Peterson on run downs and Wolfe on pass downs so there's no clear handcuff to get.

This injury to Jones may mean that the Bears will throw a little more often. I do think that the Bears would like to have Forte carry a little less of the load.

With the backups for Forte not having done much in the NFL, it may mean a few more attempts for Cutler.

I wonder how this will change fortes projections?
Not at all.The lunatic fringe (that thought Jones was some sort of threat to Forte's carries) will just plug in Peterson there, while the sane among us will continue to know that Forte is the workhorse.
While I don't think KJ was set to cut into Forte's touches significantly, I think, based largely on comments I read by beat writers etc., that KJ (looking a little more explosive this year vs. last) was going to spell Forte a bit more this year. Not at all because he is near the player Forte is, but because it makes sense to keep your stud RB fresh throughout the grind of the NFL season. I don't think Peterson or Wolfe bring to the table quite what a reasonably healthy KJ does, so I see this loss meaning a few more carries for Forte and that he will get a little less rest throughout the season.

ETA: Fron Brad Biggs blog this summer...

Veteran Kevin Jones said more playing time was not the primary factor in his decision to turn down an offer from the Buffalo Bills and return, but it did come up in the conversation.

"We definitely want him to be more involved and we told him that,'' offensive coordinator Ron Turner said. "He's a good football player. Last year he came in and he was coming off that knee and he came into camp and he wasn't in the best of shape. His knee wasn't 100 percent. Now, he's a year removed from knee surgery, he's had a year in our system. He's looking great out here. He looks totally different. He's quicker. He looks more confident in himself and in our offense. He looks really good."

Jones didn't come on board until July last year and that meant Forte was ahead of him in terms of learning the playbook. He will not be behind this time, and one of the things he's trying to prove to Turner is that he can catch the ball. That's one thing Forte did well. He led all running backs in the league with 63 receptions, setting a Bears' record for catches by a rookie at the same time.

"Kevin doesn't want to be a guy that is just back there to run it,'' Turner said. ``He already told me, `I got 61 one year.' I said, `I know, Kevin.' He said he was just reminding me. We wanted to get him in more than we did and it was just a matter of comfort level. We had more confidence in Matt. He's got an offseason now. We need to get Matt off the field and Matt will be a better player because of it.''

Yeah, but you cant deny that if Forte looks tired or tweaks something, you dont need to hesitate to sit him for a series when you have a RB like Kevin jones who can step in and do a good job.this makes all the difference in the world. with KJ healthy, Forte gets 3-5% less carries than he would with KJ injured.

In the offseason Forte discussions, one possible negative was the presence of Jones. I thought that was laughable. No one thinks Forte is going to get every single carry, but at no time did I think the Bears coaching staff was thinking, "Geez, we gotta figure out a way to get Jones the ball." Saying that a player will spell the stud......I mean, who doesn't do that?

Obviously the Bears will add a RB. The question is whether it'll be a legit backup to Forte or a RB4 warm body. That may depend on who falls out during the cuts today and tomorrow.

They will be eyeing the Packers to be sure. Either Lumpkin or Sutton (probably Lumpkin) will be cut. Also Dede Dorsey in Cincy, always productive when healthy, usually hurt, will likely be available. Kenny Watson was cut earlier too. LaMont Jordan could be a cut from the Broncos. Rafael Little was just cut from Tennessee and he has some ability. I read it's possible Baltimore keeps only one of Parmele and Peerman. If they try to put Peerman on the PS, he could get scooped up. One of Pittman/Darby/Ogbonnaya will be left out.

Among old vets, Ahman Green, Warrick Dunn are out there wanting to play. Also TJ Duckett, although I suspect he's not the fit they'd be looking for. Ryan Torain s/b healthy from his injury soon. DeShaun Foster, Rudi Johnson, Michael Pittman. Tatum Bell has joined the UFL and I don't know if he could get out of that commitment, but he's like a cockroach that just keeps coming back. Deuce McAllister wants to play still, though he's subject to a 4 game suspension if he comes back. SAlex wants to play still.

And probably a lot I forgot. So, lots of names out there.

Raiders will cut one of, or both: Gary Russell and Louis Rankin. Both could be worth a look.

Oh I agree... but Forte played a TON last year... and I think it is reasonable to think that if KJ was healthy and looking more explosive again, that CHI could feel better about resting Forte a touch more than they would with Peterson/Wolfe as his main backup(s).This is sort of what I was talking about... From Brad Biggs blog over the summer:

I'm not that sure about this. There was speculation that Peterson may have been on the roster bubble as the 4th string RB, but he looked pretty good lately. I think it makes sense to add a practice squad RB, but they should be OK with Peterson/Wolfe backing up Forte. Not sure there's room for a 4th RB on the active roster and not sure they'll find someone better than either of their current backups. Obviously, if there is another RB out there that they really like, they have some added room to pick him up now. But, I don't think they'll make a big move here.

Jones got a lot of hype/positive buzz from camp reports, but he showed very little in the preseason games. I don't think this will have much of an impact on the Bears as long as Forte stays healthy.

IMO the Bears should look at Jalen Parmele or Cedric Peerman as a backup to Forte. One of them is likely to be cut and either would probably be an upgrade over the others backs on the roster.

Aaron,I only saw him in limited action against Denver but he wasn't necessarily blowing my mind.

32 yd TD didn't raise an eyebrow? :coffee: Oh wait that was the game the week before vs NYG.The nice thing was seeing Cutler throw the under ball to him, hope he keeps it up.

This changed my projections quite a bit. Forte was pretty awful punching the ball in and I saw Kevin Jones vulturing some of those TDs. I really think Adrian Peterson and Garrett Wolfe are just warm bodies and will have minimal roles going forward. I am still not 100% in love with Forte's skills here, but the oportunity is there to have an outstanding season once again.
