You are right, there are a lot of athletes who do Make A Wish. I'm wondering, why do people bash Tebow, is it because of his religious roots? He has always seemed like a nice guy to me who works hard to be good at what he does.I really like Tebow and think it's absurd that people bash him. It's one of the major reasons I still think Mike Florio is a goon. But with that being said, quite a lot of athletes do the Make A Wish stuff. It's awesome that he did it too, but I don't think that alone makes him special for any reason. But still a cool story.
Nor does he give a #### that what the media thinks of him.Cutler is a pretty good guy too, but he isnt as charismatic.
Don't kid yourself, Tebow gets bashed BECAUSE he has character. Plenty of people in the US prefer to tear down anyone that displays integrity, especially in a Christian religious context.I dont think anyone doubts his character as a person. Some just doubt his ability as a NFL QB. Great story though. Been enjoying this series.
I am warming up to Tebow. To answer your question, many people don't like him or didn't like him not "because of his religious roots" but because of the perception that he was wearing his religion on his shirt sleeve. To many, religious is a private belief and practice, not something you advertise. When he painted Biblical verses on his face while appearing on national television, he was seen as 'holier than thou.' Personally, I don't like other people throwing their religion in my face.I think other people felt he was using his religious character as a way to improve his popularity with evangelical Christians, improving his draft status. Whether this was the object of his using football as a way to advertise religion or not is impossible to know, but that it in fact did improve his draft status I think is indisputable. He was instantly far more popular than his ability or performance justified simply because he was so outspoken about his religion. You are right, there are a lot of athletes who do Make A Wish. Fair enough, it is certainly cool to be a Christian basher (especially online) these days.Don't kid yourself, Tebow gets bashed BECAUSE he has character. I think he nailed it too. It's much more acceptable these days to be a pessimist and tear things down. Positive people annoy the unhappy.I think you nailed itDon't kid yourself, Tebow gets bashed BECAUSE he has character. I doubt this very much. I don't think Tebow was drafted because of his popularity one bit. He was drafted because he was a Heisman trophy winner that set a bunch of NCAA records, won tons of games, has a big arm, is fast, has great size, is smart guy that understands the game, and is a proven leader that can rally his team. None of that guarantees success and I don't think that he has the ability to be an elite NFL QB, but he has enough talent to more than justify his draft slot. To say that he was drafted where he was because he is an outspoken Christian is just silliness.I am warming up to Tebow. looked pretty good with 11 tds passes in essentially 4 games late in the season and 3 straight 300 yard games. I know thats a small sample size but this kid has a great work ethic, he is genuine and is a total leader. people that bash Tebow are scared of living. Pathetic little tools who prounce around and worship their gangbang, dog fighting players. Well I don't want to rant but yes Tebow is awesome and root for him as a pleyer and believe he will be a great qb in the NFL.I dont think anyone doubts his character as a person. Some just doubt his ability as a NFL QB. Great story though. Been enjoying this series.

Well said.I watched it yesterday. I may come off as too much of a cynic here but sometimes those pieces feel contrived to me. It's difficult to tell how those meetings flow because they're editted and cut up so heavily. At times it looks like they're just going down a checklist for ESPN's purposes.
Water Gun showdown...check
Throw baseballs....check
Take kid to field and setup pass patterns with Dad coached by kid....check
Receive a few passes from kid....check
Sign football for kid....check
sign cleats for kid....check
Part of it gives me a dirty feel......about ESPN.
But beyond that I get a different feel from Tebow. He comes off sincere and very comfortable interacting with the kid. Sometimes the athletes seem to go through the motions with these Make a Wish kids but Tebow doesn't just go through the motions. The way he interacted with the kid was more like a big brother than someone doing a big favor for a really sick kid.
I like how Tebow tells the kid he'd like to keep in touch beyond that day and have him come to a game. It comes off sincere and it means that Tebow is willing to go beyond expectations to me.
Tebow seems like a guy that gets it to me. Just like Curtis Granderson does for the Yankees. Those guys aren't just athletes going through the motions, they're men of substance. They get it, they actually care.
I too have become a Tebow fan.

I don't think so. I was one of the ones who voted "Will never amount to anything" or whatever that poll option was back when he was drafted. But he looked surprisingly effective to me. Surprisingly. He will never be a classic dropback QB and he'll never sling it around like Dan Marino, but he has other strengths. Incredible mobility, hard to bring down, leadership, desire and all the intangibles in the world. If his coaches don't ask him to be something he's not, he can be a successful QB.he seems to be a good person but he's a lousy QB for an NFL team.
I've always had the feeling the main reason many people don't like him is the same reason they don't like a Brett Favre or a Vince Young. Or a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady for that matter.Because they get sick of hearing about him all the time.I am warming up to Tebow. I think this is what separates him from the other gimmicky QB drafted over the years (Crouch, VY). He knew what he was drafted for, but took it upon himself in Year 1 to get better. I also sold him short on the basis of his combine training when it was stated, he did not know how to take a snap from center. I blamed Tebow at the time thinking it was a lack of desire to learn the way that he would have to to succeed at the next level, but now I put it on Meyer and his staff. How do you do a kid wrong like that who gave you so much??? It would have killed them going into his senior year to take 30 minutes after practice each day and prep him for his inevitable future?I don't think so. Meh....it seems pretty popular to slam Christianity. Famous people and advertisers throw things in my face all the time, telling me how I should think, look, act, and what things I should believe in...and it's rarely Christianity. I've got to tolerate everything else but not someone who's vocal about their belief in God. Tebow wearing his Christianity on his sleeve is the least of my pet peeves. It reminds me of the South Park episode when the kids are forced to go to Tolerance Camp. They go to the Tolerance Museum and it's demanded of them that they respect different races, people's sizes, and choices they make. At the end of the tour the lady sums it all up telling the kids why they need to respect everyone else, and a second later freaks out at some guy smoking off in the distance and rips on him for it. All the other adults chime in and tear down the smoker as well. It's pretty hilarious and another solid poke at society's inconsistencies by the writers.I am warming up to Tebow. fixed
and are tired of hearing how good a guy he is. The worst thing for a 'really good" guy is for people to constantly be told how "good" a guy that person is.The reality is that people are flawed and eventually even persons with best intentions and even history of good works have done something or will something that is not up their standards or immoral or frankly even illegal. Seriously, the preacher/pastor/deacon screwing half the congegation and/or bilking funds in some way are almost cliche at this point. I want just want to watch Tebow play football. He was.....until you told us about it.Guys like Randy Moss do this kind of stuff all the time and shun the press. Does that make Randy an even better person?

Do you have evidence of this?![]()
Guys like Randy Moss do this kind of stuff all the time and shun the press. Does that make Randy an even better person?it's great that Tebow does stuff like this but every time he does his agent makes sure all the press is around so Tebow can attention whore it up.Tons of guys in the limelight do just as much if not more but don't have their agent call up every media source to cover it so their client can make more money on endorsements in the future.
That's very ignorant. Tebow has been doing stuff for kids and charities all the way back to his high school days and probably before. It's how he was raised. His agent isn't the one broadcasting it. Tebow wants word to get out about what he is doing so others will see it and hopefully decide to do it themselves. Tebow isn't out to gloss himself no matter how much you want him to be.Guys like Randy Moss do this kind of stuff all the time and shun the press. Does that make Randy an even better person?

I think you're taking a pretty cynical viewpoint there - if you read the comments of the ESPN link in the OP, the kid's dad posted a response and said Tebow's done a dozen more of these Make-A-Wish trips this year that never got publicized. The Tebow media saturation gets to be a little much at times, but I don't think it's necessarily him or his people constantly creating that stuff, it's just a product of today's 24/7 sports coverage combined with Tebow's fan popularity.Guys like Randy Moss do this kind of stuff all the time and shun the press. Even though you're from FSU, I bet Tebow would teach you punctuation and English if you asked nicely. Just saying....there are alot of good people in the NFL/sports. but they aren't crammed down our throats like this guy. the media give this guy a verbal BJ any time they can
Based on?His limited 3 game sample size says differently.he seems to be a good person but he's a lousy QB for an NFL team.
