So this seems like the appropriate thread to discuss what lead to V-J Day.

1) Do you think Truman knew the full affects of what the bomb would be?

2) If so, was he wrong to drop the bomb?

3) Was it wrong to drop the second bomb - after he knew the affects of the first?

Yes

No

No, although the Japanese surrender had as much to do with the Soviets declaration of war. The Soviets role in defeating the Axis powers is greatly diminished in the west

1) Is there knowledge of that? I was watching a documentary recently and it stated that Truman knew nothing about the Manhattan Project before he was President and didn't understand the full devastation of what the bombs would do/had done until he saw aerial photographs of Hiroshima.

2) Why do you think it was ok to drop the bombs on civilians? Not once but twice?

3) Do you think they same could have been accomplished by dropping the bombs on rural or mountainous regions?

I don't think there was the same moral distinction between nuclear and non-nuclear force in 1945 as there is today for people who've spent their whole lives considering the unthinkable.

1) Good questions. I am not an expert, but clearly he knew enough to let the Allies and Russians know what kind of weapons the US had. I don't know that most people fully grasped the long lasting effects to the world (cold war) and other ethical questions, the bombs would bring.

2) Welcome to World War II. We have advanced warfare and engagement that I wouldn't expect the US to bomb civilian targets today, but that was not the case in WWII. Its brutual and sad, but that's how wars were fought. I'm glad that many wars are now reduce to lower civilian causalities.

I also think by actually using the weapons, it has prevented additional atomic weapons from bring used.

3) I don't think bombing a mountain would have any effect. A better question, in my mind, is would the Japanese have surrendered if the US didn't drop a bomb, and the answer could very well be yes, but we don't know. At least it had not happened to that point.

if there was a ground war on mainland Japan we would of needed the Russians to help out. Not sure they helped out a ton in pacific islands.

So no comments from anyone about what was just said to me in here (and subsequently erased)? Your silence on that kind of stuff is tantamount to condoning it.

roadkill1292 - I see you are lurking in here. Care to apologize and retract your comment?

Guy's a complete chump. He just got personal with me in the Late Night Thread, the one where the guy that espouses worker cooperatives can't possibly be in favor of controlling the means of production. Ignore it, he's obviously a small little nasty clown.

Who's the small little nasty clown?

Who's zat?

Who's zat small widdle nasty two-year-old clown?

Yesterday when I stated my concern with suicide rates for gay teens, someone posted that he wished I was a gay teen. Later on he apologized, though he also tried to explain it away at the same time.

I dunno. Civility seems to be dying out these days. A guy running for President insults Mexicans, insults POWs, and insults women. And every time he does this stuff his poll numbers go up. No wonder people are rude.

No.
You do realize it's a federal crime to issue threatening statements over the internet, right? Not smart. I'm pretty sure the statement "I dream of murdering General Tso in his sleep" would classify as a threat in some legal circles. At the very least it is a horrible thing to say, just because you disagree with someone's politics and life experiences.

If he deleted the post, doesnt that count as a retraction?

He didn't delete the post. The mods did, along with my response, to protect their liability. They will probably delete these posts as well.

Or maybe he was waiting for Sept 2nd you know the official US VJ day since that's the day the surrender was signed and that is when we traditionally observe it.
I know all about it. My Dad was on the Missouri.
Either you don't care about VJ day, or your father was not on the Missouri. Or both. If you cared about VJ day, because your dad was on the Missouri you would absolutely know what month VJ day falls in.

I believe the only reason you actually care is this:

I watch Fox from 8-11 almost every night.
Oof.

I didn't think he was a bad guy. Had some political views I disagreed with, but so do a lot of people. Seemed nice enough to me.

WTF happened in here?

When I see "guest xyz poster" I kinda feel like I should be on my best behavior, after all we need to treat our guests with respect.

A good point which would be a lot stronger if you were equally vigilant against left-wing rhetoric. But instead you have a tendency to group all people on the opposing side together with the worst elements to belittle everyone on the other side instead of engaging in legitimate points.

:lmao: Nuked his ###
That would indeed be a way to look at it I suppose.

Or it could be that he'd had it with what he viewed as a stinkfest, requested a delete, and was obliged. That was the impression I got.

But I guess laughing off weirdly hyperbolic murder fantasies by members of the board is the modus operandi for some people.

Would like to know what really happened here. How does one become a "guest" poster after they have already established a well known account?

Actually, General Tso was always nice to me and respectful of my opinion, so I also have trouble not being critical of a banishment.

In any event, I can't say that I am really surprised. The General kept talking about black mobs beating up white people and those that have started threads with that meme (johnjohn, popsecret and Clinton come to mind) don't seem to last too long on this forum.

He asked his account be deleted... so poof.

Not to worry, he will be back in yet another form.
