RB O. Smith Jumps To CFL

Associated Press, via Houston Chronicle - [Full Article]

Onterrio Smith, who sat out last season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, signed a contract Friday with the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The former Minnesota Viking running back was released last month with six weeks remaining on the one-year suspension he received for violating the drug policy.

Maybe he and Ricky can share stories......and other items.

What's odd about this story is that he appears to have a 1-season commitment to the CFL even though the NFL was reportedly able to reinstate him in October of 06. The way I'm reading the story here, the CFL contract wouldn't expire prior to the Grey Cup [at the earliest], which is November 19. Hard to imagine an NFL team bringing him in in December.

As i understand it the NFL isn't ready to reinstate him in October. He's just eligible to apply for reinstatement in October.

I'll be at the Argo-Bomber game thats for sure. Onterrio vs. Ricky ! And if Ricky does come up here and play, he will destroy defenses. It will be ridiculous.

Welcome :welcome: to Canada where ya smoke the green and the money's Loonie

Wonder what the over/under is on both of em applying for citizenship

Another strange fact about the signing is that our current RB, Charlie Roberts, is arguable the best player in the league. Here is a bit about him:

COLLEGE CAREER – The leading rusher in NCAA Division I history originally became a Winnipeg Blue Bomber when he inked a pact with the CFL club May 22, 2001. Roberts is a U.S. college football legend. During his time with the Hornets, Roberts set or tied nine NCAA I-AA records, 13 Big Sky Conference records and 27 Sacramento State records.

Roberts accomplished so much during his college career that it is embarrassing to try and describe it all. Among the highlights is the NCAA single-game rushing record of 409 yards versus Idaho State, Nov. 6, 1999. That performance won Roberts several honors and represents the first and only time a college running back has exceeded 400 yards rushing in a game since the NCAA began recording statistics in 1937.

To boot, SOD was on local TV today doing a phone interview saying that he is not coming to take over the job at RB. He said he realizes it is Charlie's team, etc. Kinda a strange situation.

Also the Blue have a new coach who typically doesn't run the ball terribly much. So in the CFL where a RB getting 20 carries is huge, we have 2 splitting time in a pass pass pass offence...strange.

I think he just wants the fast cash and the ability to smoke some good canadian gunga.

I am from Winnipeg too. This is a stupid move by the Bomers. Sure the kid has talent but he has major baggage and we already have arguably the best RB in the league. Who might I add is ticked we signed the Whiz Kid. Check out this article. SOD hasn't lost his cockiness one bit.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are hoping Onterrio Smith can help win them a Grey Cup.

Smith, meanwhile, is hoping the Bombers can get him back to the NFL.

Original Whizzinators and positive drug tests aside, it looks like it could be a match made in heaven.

The Bombers officially signed the suspended NFL running back yesterday to a two-year contract, including an option. Smith, 25, will arrive in Winnipeg on Tuesday for the start of the team's rookie camp on Wednesday.

"I produce a talent that's pretty rare," Smith said yesterday from Marina del Ray, Calif. "I'm not saying that out of arrogance or cockiness or anything like that. I honestly believe that I really am talented.

"... It's a great opportunity for me to come in and get some football back under my belt before reinstatement to the NFL."

Bomber GM Brendan Taman believes Smith is too good to play in the CFL, and that's why they signed him despite three positive NFL drug tests and the fact their No. 1 tailback, Charles Roberts, is upset that NFL-calibre competition is coming to town.

CLEANED UP HIS ACT

As for the marijuana use that earned him a year-long NFL suspension last May, Smith claims to have cleaned up his act.

"I still get tested by the NFL four times a month," he said. "Where I stay at now, I still attend meetings, so, yeah, I've cleaned up."

Smith's year-long suspension was slated to end next Friday, but the NFL told his agent last month he wouldn't be reinstated until October. Smith doesn't know why his suspension was extended.

The Minnesota Vikings released Smith to let him pursue a CFL career, but it's believed the NFL will continue to randomly test him while he's with the Bombers.

Taman said it's unlikely the Bombers will test Smith themselves (the CFL doesn't have a substance abuse policy), but the GM did admit Smith will be on a relatively short leash.

"If he comes into practice every three days and he's half-buzzed and he doesn't know what he's doing, well, obviously he's not going to be with our club," said Taman.

The GM doesn't think Smith would be as infamous as he is if he hadn't got caught last April with The Original Whizzinator, a artificial penis designed to beat drug tests.

Taman compared Smith to Mike Sellers, who revived his career with the Bombers in 2002 and 2003 and returned to the NFL in 2004 with the Washington Redskins. It should be noted, however, that Sellers' only offence in the NFL was getting arrested on drug-related charges that were later dropped.

Smith has much more baggage, but Taman believes he is ready to turn his life around, too. The GM also did background checks on Smith's attitude in general and heard nothing but good things.

And if he plays half as well in Canada as he did in the NFL, well, Taman will certainly be fine with that. The 5-foot-10, 215-pound California native appeared in 27 games for the Vikings in 2003 and 2004, rushing for 1,123 yards and seven touchdowns.

"If he comes up here and has a pretty good year, we're not going to see him here next year," said Taman.

Smith has also been named in a civil lawsuit in which a Minnesota woman accused him of sexual assault in 2004, but police didn't lay charges and Taman is under the belief that the accusations are baseless.

"It's not going to interfere with him being with our team," said Taman.

Humbled Onterrio Smith heads to Manitoba

Admitting he was "young and careless" and had a problem with marijuana, suspended NFL running back and former Viking Onterrio Smith turned to the next chapter of his professional career Friday morning when he signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

"For me to be in the position that I am now, I would say that it was a problem with the marijuana," Smith told the Winnipeg Free Press. "Yes, it was.".....................

...........................Although the CFL does not have a drug-testing policy, it does permit the NFL to test suspended players while they are in the CFL. Smith said the NFL has been testing him four times a month. His agent, Doug Hendrickson, said Smith has been in drug rehab programs for seven of the past 12 months and is drug-free.

"Over the past year, I have grown so much as a man as far as taking on more responsibility with my kids and becoming a family guy and having sit-downs with my mom and my grandmother, and trying to stay out of the limelight," Smith told the Free Press. "I took things for granted and kind of lost my hunger along the way.

"I figured out football is what I want to do and this is my life, and I'm going to push at it for however long as I can."...........................

............................."It's going to be interesting," said Brendan Taman, the Blue Bombers general manager. "There's no question he's quite a player. Now we have to see how he handles himself.
