Former NFL running back Onterrio Smith faces DUI charge

By Ryan Lillis - rlillis@sacbee.com

Last Updated 11:50 am PDT Friday, May 2, 2008

Former NFL running back and Grant High School legend Onterrio Smith was arrested early Friday in Sacramento on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said. Smith, 27, was booked into Sacramento County Jail just after 4 a.m., jail records show. He was arrested at Morrison Avenue and Disk Drive near Del Paso Heights.

Smith was also held on a warrant for driving with a suspended license and other traffic infractions, according to jail records.

A former running back for the Minnesota Vikings, Smith violated the NFL's anti-drug policy three times and was denied reinstatement to the league in 2006 for not complying with mandated drug counseling. The same year, he was cut by Winnipeg of the Canadian Football League.

Man, this guy could have been great. I'm sure he's depressed and still hasn't completely grown up, and the downward spiral continues to perpetuate itself.

didn't switz have a rather strong opinion on this guy?
Yes, I thought he had the talent to be a top runningback. He did. He just didn't have the mentai makeup.
I so agree. Smith had great vision, quickness, and lateral movement. He could catch, too. I loved watching him in the limited time he saw the field. Unfortunately his penchant for trouble set me back a couple of years in a dynasty league.

The knucklehead cost my wife our FF league title in 2003. Maybe the cops can add theft of a FF title to his list of charges. :goodposting:

Yeah, amidst all his problems...financial problems, drug abuser, suspended drivers license, fines and fees, child support, street fighting, etc., I'm sure he's losing lots of sleep because your wife lost her fantasy title in 2003. Sometimes guys need to get some perspective on how silly this fantasy football stuff really is. I miss the days when people cheered for their favorite team because they loved their team (now its all about fantasy teams and stats) and this fantasy stuff didn't warp every guppy's mind.

Tongue in cheek down? Sheesh...

This story made the local news here in Sacramento, since he played his HS ball here. A reporter tried to interview him when he was released and Smith declined. It was very obvious that Smith had put on quite a bit of extra weight in the last couple/few years (and not muscle).
