Draft research just became a whole lot easier

You need to check this out.

ESPN.com has expanded its NFL draft tool, and you're a draftnik or football data junkie, you very well could get lost for hours sorting through all the information to answer just about any draft question you can imagine.

The database includes every draft choice since 1967 and can be searched by round, position, college, pro coach, college coach, high school and high school state. You also can search through any player who won a major college award.

One of the big AFC East questions heading into the draft is whether the Miami Dolphins will select a receiver with their 25th pick. Fans realize that Dolphins football operations boss Bill Parcells doesn't have much of a track record for that.

How long would it take to research that info by thumbing through media guides (if you had them all) or searching on-line?

It took two seconds on ESPN.com. I changed the year to "All," switched the position to "WR" and dragged down to find Parcells in the coaching field.

The search quickly returned two first-round receivers: Mark Ingram in 1987 with the 28th pick and Terry Glenn in 1996 with the seventh overall pick. Galloway was the infamous selection that convinced Parcells he had to leave the New England Patriots because Robert Kraft wouldn't let him "buy the groceries."

I also checked to see how many Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets were in the system. Much to my delight, I discovered the Los Angeles Rams selected receiver Tom Graham in the eighth round in 1972. No relation.

comments on WRs drafted by top coaches in the first are pretty interesting at link though

Could use this to find out how many 1st rounders drafted by each team made the pro bowl. I know the pro bowl is not all that but at least it is recognition from fans and players.

You could then look at which positions were most successful by team based on which players made the pro bowl. Create a rating system for each team based on their past drafts and by how successful they were drafting each position.

I doubt I will get around to it. But could be an interesting thing to see.

Why is the thread titled "Oops" ????

Im not the biggest fan of ESPN and how they do things but bashing them for this seems unwarranted and petty.

Sure , they made a minor typo in the article but the real story here is the fact that ESPN added a great tool to their site.

drafthistory.com is another good reference for draft information. They don't have query tools but have a lot of great reports, including transactions, super bowl QBs, multiple picks in rounds, etc. If ESPN added coaches that would be useful and something I don't think I've seen anywhere else.
