Open store bought Hummus left out overnight - OK to eat? (1 Viewer)

When in doubt throw it out.

Probably OK, but I wouldn't risk food poisoning trying to salvage something I spent a few dollars on.

Would you eat chickpeas that had been left out all night? How about canola (not olive, wth?) oil?

McDonald's special sauce is mayo left out in the sun for 3 days so I am sure hummus left open for 1 night is fine.

Yeah what's in hummus that requires refrigeration?
There's a possibility of getting sick, but very, very small I'd think. There's probably a little lemon juice in there to help the cause. There's probably not alot of salt/sodium in there, but probably enough to hold off any bugs for a night. And it was no doubt made with canned chick peas that were cooked all to hell with some kind of preservative or acid for good measure.

I can't think of any reason this would be more dangerous than eating other commonly non-refrigerated items, like peanut butter or, in many households, butter. Outside of meat, you could get away with many foods, if it's just overnight. Especially a pre-packaged product. Hell, there's a lot of old grandma's that don't even refrigerate mayonnaise.

I've eaten many a slice of pizza that got left out overnight. It's been a while, but on many a drunken college night, we'd be too drunk to remember to put it in the fridge, and it looked awful tasty the next morning.

Joe, hike up your skirt and eat that damn hummus.
