Just started this series. Have to say I'm impressed so far. First episode was a bit slow, but it's really picked up. Great characters so far.

Definitely in on this (3 episodes so far).
Weeds didn't have a ton of staying power, but I really like Johan's style (and Weeds was, at times, a very good show). She's apparently got a fetish for suburban white chicks doing things you don't normally expect of suburban white chicks, but that's fine.
This actually the first of the Netflix series' that I've watched (outside of AD). I saw it promoted a little, but not nearly as much as "House of Cards". I'm glad because this seems like the sort of series that works best without much in the way of expectations. I could see someone expecting it to be really funny being disappointed. Not a ton of funny moments (I laughed pretty hard at the "Mad Men" thing though). Just some interesting characters, mostly acted very well, and an interesting story. You just start watching and, for some reason, want to keep watching.
I think they hit a HR with Taylor Shilling, and I'm very curious to learn more about the Russian cook and the Jamaican lady. The crazy chick from American Pie is great too. She's great in all her scenes.
I saw it's already got a 2nd season ordered.

9 episodes in and this thing just keeps getting better and better. Taylor Schilling's going have to get some hardware for this. She's absolutely killing it.
I think this is the best new drama I've seen since Breaking Bad. I love Justified and Parenthood, but they didn't start out with the bang that Orange does. I can't really pinpoint why, but it doesn't really feel like any other show I've ever seen (and I've seen way too many TV shows).
Great drama about an interesting group of women with some great moments of mostly dark humor. The prison serves as a nice plot device. They do some of the typical prison stuff, but they do it better and more thoughtful without going over the top.
Pornstache Sobotka completely creeps me out and makes me laugh at the same time. He's the closest thing they have to a caricature on the show, but it's well used.

I think it's certainly got that kind of potential.
Not a huge fan of most of the Pennsatucky stuff (they got a little ridiculous with her) but as a device to get to the ending, it was worth it. Love all the other characters though.
Can't wait for the next season.

I've got a thing for Natasha Lyonne (I have since American Pie). She's not classically hot either. That strung out thing of hers does it for me (which apparently isn't completely acting for her).
I noticed she kept being credited as a special guest star and she's working on another show with FOX. I hope she's back next season, but I guess she might not be.

Piper's conversation with the girl in the wheelchair was amazing. An all-time great scene and, to me, the scene that ultimately defines the season.
They don't give Yoga Jones (or is it Namaste Jones?) much to do, but when they do it's always fantastic. The scene with the track star chick was great.
Not totally in love with the whole Daya/Guard storyline, but they played it out pretty well. Particularly, Red and the gang explaining how her only option was to nail Pornstache. It was a pretty powerful moment when that psycho whipped out a condom.
Kind of a common theme with a lot of these storylines. Even if the story itself isn't completely engaging, the performances almost always carry it and the scenes are engaging anyway.
We need more of the brother.
I'm pretty indifferent about Larry. Biggs did a find job, but we need more of Polly and the brother next season.
I'm excited about Maria running the kitchen. They haven't done much with her character yet, but it seems like there could be plenty there. Plus I'm excited for the prisoners to start getting a little more spice in their diet.
Red pissed off and plotting will also be nice to follow.

Aside from the subtle lesbianism throughout, I love the storyline and have only watched 4 episodes - can't wait to finish it. With this and House of Cards, I do not miss the cable that I cut in April.
BTW, the opening song by Regina Spektor is

And that's with mostly women that are average or below by TV show standards. They even rough up Chapman a good bit when she's in prison. She's still very hot, but dear Lord, drug smuggling Piper is out of this world hot (well, as long as she's not wearing shoulder pads).

Yeah I was kinda disappointed when I saw that it had been renewed for season 2. I'm only a few episodes in but I was kinda thinking/hoping this season covers her 15 months and then we're done. I guess she could still get out and the end of this season but then what happens next season?

Seems odd to like a show (not that you specifically said that), but want it to be a short run.Going to season 2-4 isn't really the same as a show going to season 6-10 when they should've stopped after 4 or 5.
I assume this is because you've only seen a few episodes. The show's not really about seeing Chapman make it through her 15 months. The show becomes more and more about everyone else (though obviously, Chapman is still the main focus).
There are a ton of stories to tell here and it's pretty simple to add more and more (it's also not hard to extend Chapman's sentence). Kohan's made it clear that Piper was the vehicle to get in to a place populated by a lot of Latino and black women and tell interesting stories involving them.
And I think (and hope) you guys are going to be very disappointed. Kohan also said, paraphrasing, but not by much, that she could 'go on forever with this ####'. (don't have the link handy). She did say that she'd stop when she didn't feel like there was anything interesting left to do or that she just got bored (not that her Weeds track record was good with that, but this is already far better than Weeds ever was).

3 episodes in. Liking it so far, really focuses a lot more on the drama than the comedy. Not complaining, was just expecting more of a comedic series from the person behind Weeds.
The lead actress is a really great actress, surprised I have never seen her in anything before.

Agree about Weeds. It was pretty good at times, but quickly became terrible and went on far too long.
From the first season, I'm pretty confident this will go a lot better.
Actually, this show seems to correct a lot of my main complaints about Weeds. They tried to go more comedy than drama and simply didn't have enough good characters to sustain. It stayed a shallow show for however many seasons it was on. Orange seems much more intent on being a drama with some humor along the way and seem more intent on developing characters.

Yeah, driving a good concept like Weeds into the ground is why I think this show's better off with a short run. Maybe she doesn't get out at the end of this year, and they stretch it across a couple seasons? I'd be OK with that.

I think a 15 month sentence, told at the speed the show seems to be telling it, would be about right. I do think that modern shows benefit from having fixed lengths. The show has obviously already agreed to depart from the actual Piper's experience judging by the memoir (there was nothing like Pornstache or the Pennsatucky incidents in the book), but it still strikes me that there's a sort of fixed-length story to tell here. Maybe two or three more seasons.

I think the first season only covered three or four months or so. The track star spends two weeks in the SHU, and the screwdriver incident is pretty early in Piper's tenure. Thanksgiving isn't long after she gets out, and we end up either at or very shortly before Christmas.
