A new law that took effect this week in Oregon will allow residents in rural counties to pump their own gas — a divergence from the state’s decades-long history of having attendants pump gas for drivers.

This seems like something out of an idea for Footloose 2.  We want to be able to pump our own gas, but the preacher is against it.  I am not sure what is more sad, that there was a law like this, or that people seem to be worried how to use this newfangled gas dispensing contraption.

Well, okay....I know the rest of the country is having a nice laugh at the expense of my fair state here, but consider this:  Oregon's rural areas are really rural.  It's a much bigger state than many people would guess and the little towns and counties affected by this change are populated by people that just aren't the jetsetting type.  I'm guessing many of them have never left their hometowns.   Couple that with the fact that the lobby here (which is pretty powerful, for reasons I'll never fathom) has put the fear of GAWD into these people about what can happen at the gas pump; these aren't sophisticated folks and they scare easily.  So some - not ALL - are upset over this.

I for one would welcome the opportunity to pump my own gas again.  I figure I've wasted a good 12 hours of my life waiting for the pump jockey to either emerge from the store with a glacial pace to start pumping my gas or to come back when I'm full and put the nozzle back.  It's agonizing having to wait for another human to do a job I can do in much less time because I have a sense of urgency this other human does not.

When I was in Oregon the key to getting good service was jumping out of the car and grabbing the pump and claiming Texas.

New Jersey is the same way. I have to drive thru it to get to my folks in Boston; in the past the gas prices have been cheap, and it was kinda nice to have someone else get out and do the 'work,' but now it has evolved into a process where they pump gas and maybe do your windshield and sometimes ask for a tip. The prices for gas have gone up, but I don't think that is related to having full service gas.

Now this is driving thru on turnpikes and stopping at rest areas, so I don't know about regular gas stations, although the full service is a state law.

Whenever I drive to Portland I make sure I fill up before leaving. Who wants to touch that gross handle.

What really happens is you pull in you forget about this weird rule and get out to pump your gas and some guy comes up to you and you are thinking WTF does this guy want.

It's because Chris Christie passed an enormous gas tax.

After seeing numerous videos of people driving away from a pump with the gas nozzle still attached to their vehicle, I'm not sure having an attendant do the work for us is a bad thing.

Why am i thinking this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHJbSvidohg while reading your post?

Sorry - had to do that.  It was just right there, ripe for the picking.

He's gone from one of my favorite politicians to a complete pile of poo.  The last straw for me was the whole debacle with closing parks and beaches on the July 4th weekend.

Love when people double down on bad policies because of jobs.  I recall being in Venezuela and some guy was painting the stripe in the middle of the road with a brush and bucket. "Don't you have machines that can do that?"  "Yeah, but then someone will be out of a job".  Congrats!

this never happened once, never mind sometimes, please.

Do you live in NJ? It has happened to me (Xmas trip couple weeks ago) and my folks on their trips. Could it be that they are hitting on out of towners on the Turnpike and Gardenstate?

The town where I lived in Massachusetts until a few years ago has a bylaw against pumping your own gas. There are a handful of others as well. Their thinking is trying to protect the smaller service stations and preserve jobs.

I do and not one time.

If a place is busy, most attendants are cool with letting you pump.  But some of them are still Nazis :lmao:

I wonder if they hunt for folks who have out of state plates!

Curious about something ... maybe some NJ or Oregon FBGs can weigh in:

Say I really don't anyone pumping my gas for me. So before I cross into NJ, I decide to fill up my car and also fill up two 10-gallon gas cans and stow them in the trunk. After a while of driving around in Jersey, I decide I need to top off the car's gas. My car is parked at a restaurant, at a hotel, at a big-box store, doesn't matter. I pull out a gas can, open the gas cap, and commence filling up.

A cop sees me doing this. Do I get in trouble? Am I breaking a law?

No

Eta technically

But here's the catch: the driver pumping their own gas doesn't get ticketed. Instead, the dealer who runs the gas station is cited for the violation under the law, if they fail to stop the illegal pumper

OK ... so it's totally legal for a car owner to fill their own car from a gas can in their own driveway or at most places in general? But it is NOT legal for a gas station proprietor to allow that same car owner to use a gas can (or the gas pump itself) on the premises of the gas station, correct?

Will Jersey/Oregon gas-station attendants fill gas cans for you if you ask? I presume there are limits, but a 5- or 10-gallon can is not a biggie, right?

Of course they fill gas cans

It's the operation of the pump that's the 'law'

I did this this summer. I had no idea I could not pump my own gas. I apologized and he finished me off. It was wierd.

The idea of waiting for someone to pump gas for me is completely alien to me. I grew up in Michigan doing it, and it saves time, money, and hassle. I couldn't imagine Florida having such a thing. Gas stations would be even worse whenever a hurricane approaches.

I was a petroleum engineer in Oregon. (That's what I told girls) The year was 1993. Went to pump this guy's gas and he said that he would do it, didn't want me to get gas on his motorcycle. I informed him it was the law, and he was not allowed. He advised that if I took another step, he would beat me to death with the hose.

I was 18 and a tough guy...I looked him straight in the eye and said, " I only make 4.75hr, #### it...lets commit a crime." I stood there and watched him fill his own tank.

Moral of the story, gas attendants think the rule is lame also.

it's not that big of a deal.  been in Portland for almost 2 years after living all my live in Chicago / Indiana.   I've only had a few instances where it took 1 to 2 min for someone to come over and start pumping me.   I don't think twice about it now.

The Town of Huntington here on the Isle of Long does not allow people to pump their own gas. Nor does the State of Joisey.
Fo reals? How the hell did I not know that? You sure? It's hard to believe that I've never gotten gas (err - car fuel) in Huntington because this seems totally foreign to me.

and #### joisey

Lived in NJ my whole life. Never had this happen or even heard of it.

Also was an attendant from 13-18 and worked with numerous people and never heard of them ask for anything.

Maybe they were calling you guys ****? And you heard tip?

Easy. I saw others doing it (giving tips) also. Maybe they were being generous because of cold, but I have heard it happen to others. And it seems to be a more recent thing, so it may not have been happening when you were an attendant.

New Jersey blows - I got out of my rental car to head in to the convenience store at the gas station, and the guy ran over screaming at me.  I guess you tell him what you want, and he gets it for you.  Suck it - I want to browse for the perfect salty snack, you stupid state.

Wut?

Somewhere between Newark and Union, NJ, at a gas station, there were snacks and drinks available in a hut with a door.  While the guy was pumping my gas, I got out of my car to see what snack looked good, and he ran over yelling at me to get back in my car.  To buy the snacks, I have to tell him what I want, and he goes into the snack hut and brings out the items to sell to me.  Screw that.

Was this before or after he asked you for a tip?

It's probably the small stands that are an exterior office. You going in was like going behind a counter at a store. Or he was just a wack job

In Oregon motorcycle can pump their own gas.

Communication break down right there. No such thing going down in Joisey.
