Oh, he'll play. There's no doubt. Don't use the Rams cutting of him as an indicator of his ability to play. The Rams merely cut him b/c they could not find a trade partner for the remaining $21mm+ of this contract. Pace will play...and start at LT...for some lucky team this year.
I think he'll play too but I don't see him signing in the near future. Probably closer the middle to end of training camps if not after them. A big man like he is doesn't want to go through 2 a days if he can avoid them.
Pace plays this year. He had a pretty good year last year starting 14 games. He wasn't Orlando Pace Dominant last year but then the opposing D's were just running at us with everything they had last year.
I would also expect him to be in camp. The book is out on the guy. He avoids training camp as much as possible. A new team is going to want to ensure that if they are going to invest in the guy that they want him in camp. I look for a 4 years deal with a decent signing bonus that is backloaded. I see more than $10 in a signing bonus but I don't see him playing the 4th year and most likely not the 3rd.
He'll find a home. He just wasn't a wise investment for the Rams at this point. He hasn't played 16 games since '05 and they're trying to build continuity. The fact that he ended 2008 healthy will help him find a job, but it's hard to figure out how much he has left. I see Philly and Oakland as possible destinations. Hell, even Cinci could be, though I think it'd be unwise.
I agree, it'd be nice for them, but I tend to think he'll go to someone with a lesser need. He's a LT available in an OT-heavy draft year. So teams that take Pace might be missing out on a chance to draft a young, long-term solution that will equal or outperform him sooner rather than later. Thus I suspect he'll go to a team that could use a line upgrade, but isn't expected to target one early in the draft.
