Orlando Rubes: Moving There (1 Viewer)

Johnny Rock

Footballguy
Wife wants to move to the Orlando, Florida, area to be closer to my family, warmer weather and do something different. With family there already, I can move quickly (or move in temporarily with EvilGrin).

Who has leads on executive recruiters/head hunters ?

House rental market?

Foreclosure market?

Taking questions, advice and leads. Feel free to PM me if needed.

OOF.... Avoid. Orlando is hell on earth when it comes to somewhere to actually live.
Why's that?
How much time have you spent in Orlando that doesn't involve Disneyland or Universal Studios, GB? I'm guessing not too much if you're asking this question...
I love it there
To each his/her own....

IMO it's the worst of florida (crime, heat, traffic, non-english speaking population, drugs, limited REAL jobs, sprawl, homelessness, lame downtown....etc.... without any of the benefits that you SHOULD be enjoying living in a state that is essentially one giant coastline.

I spent 2-4 weeks a year over the course of a decade in Orlando... It would take a pretty massive salary bump to entice me to actually live there. Soul-less hell IMO.

I don't mind downtown Orlando. It's not an urban center by any means, but you are isolated from the tourists and there's a pretty decent bar and restaurant scene.

in Metro West
Well, there's your problem. West and south Orlando are, like, the grossest places on Earth. The area from downtown to Winter Park is really nice. The east side of town is a schizophrenic patchwork of super-expensive neighborhoods sitting across the street from horrible ghettos.

Bingo. As bad as Florida is in general, at least most places there have some redeeming features. Not Orlando. :X

It's not as bad as all that, johnnyrock. Orlando is the 99th most dangerous city in America based on violent crimes per capita. There are many, many worse.

That said, I did move to the coast. Take that for what it's worth. But if the Orlando area is set as tour destination, I can help point you in the right direction. There are some really cool areas that visitors never see in which you can be very happy. If you tell me what kind of area you're looking for, I (and Cbus and others) can definitely guide you.

That's from somebody who lives in Memphis!

I can help too. I live by UCF in East Orlando/Oviedo.

One sister lives in the 417/408/Curry Ford Road area. We like the area, her family and husband are awesome. Built-in friends and social network. Ideally, not counting all the reasons icon mentioned, I'd like to live next door to her.

Other sister and her family are great too but not as thrilled with the Ocoee side. Still a short drive.

Brother in Tampa but he can be a nomad moving between states on a whim.

This is a huge deal quitting a job, selling a house and land, finding a job or starting a business, moving the family to a new state, schools, etc. I'm trying to break it down into steps but it can be overwhelming. The reason Orlando has been zeroed in on is my sisters and BIL's being there.

There are many places in the country I'd like to live in. Choosing a different place and "going for it" is a lot without family to rely on and no job locked in. I could give 30 days notice at my job now and live with my sister until my house sells. That's huge.

Gator Shawn I remember you giving me some Orlando advice one other time. I appreciate all you guys. I REALLY want to live next door to EG.

I'm open to other areas I guess. I'd love to be on the water. The job or jumping into entrepreneurship will determine location though.

My wife wants to do something different having lived her whole life in MN. But frankly we have acreage on water and the seasons are spectacular. I fear we'll regret it but there's always land for sale if we want to return someday.

I'm rambling. I'm really looking for people who may have recruiters and contacts in Florida to build my network.

I likely need to write a business plan too. I don't want to stay at my current job.

Ha...born and raised in Ocoee, live on the east side in Cypress Springs. If someone thinks Orlando is just Disney and Universal then they've only visited. It's no big metro city, but I'm not sure anyone is under the impression that we are a big city anyway. College Park, Winter Park, Tuskawilla/Winter Springs are all nice neighborhoods.

Lake county is nice.Mount Dora area really nice 40 miles north of Orlando.Either coast is less than 2 hours away for fishing or beaches.Fresh water fishing is great plenty of lakes.

You might as well look at New Smyrna Beach then before we close the gates. If you live in Orlando you'll be here every weekend anyway. Still some good waterfront deals on the intracoastal which can be great but the market is picking up. It has been considerably more crowded this summer than we're used to but it is a wonderful small community with great restaurants, good fishing, and serious drinking.

Got married there. But how do I make money? Not financially ready to retire yet.

Hard to say, not knowing your profession or skills. But I can say that these days it seems as long as you have broadband, ambition, and are within an hour of a major airport there are a lot of options. But the only real localized industry around here is boat building and it is cyclical at best.

Orlando is 100% suburbia USA. If you want newer construction, shopping, good weather, pools, golf, international airport, strip malls, Chick Filet, etc. Then it's a great place. I have heard that near Winter Garden & Winter Park are nice.

The downtown scene isn't spectacular but the Arena is nice. They also have made Church Street better, but its not a huge downtown.

I would lean towards living near the people you all know down there. Happy wife happy life.

Orlando is the one city in FL I'd never consider living in...I dislike everything about it. That said, there are some really nice areas in and around Orlando.

As for the weather, I'd say if you like stifling, suffocating heat/humidity, tons of rain, and don't care much for breezes, it might be right up your alley.

I can't imagine living in Florida and being more than a few minutes drive from salt water. Seems like you might as well live in Mississippi or Alabama.

IMO, the suburbs of most FL & southern cities are pretty comparable. The same developers, chains, etc.
