Giants' Umenyiora carted off field with injured left knee

Associated Press

Updated: August 23, 2008, 9:06 PM ET

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora was carted off the field in the second quarter of the New York Giants' annual preseason game against the New York Jets after his left knee "locked up" on Saturday night.

X-rays were negative but further examinations are planned Sunday, the team said.

The 26-year-old could not put any weight on his leg. He was helped off the field with his arms wrapped around the shoulders of two trainers.

The injury happened with 10:48 left in the half on an incomplete pass by Brett Favre on third down.

Umenyiora started all 16 games last season and had 52 tackles and a team-high 13 sacks in earning his second Pro Bowl appearance. He added seven tackles in the Giants' run to the Super Bowl.

The Giants are a bit thin at defensive end this season with the retirement of seven-time Pro Bowler Michael Strahan. Justin Tuck has replaced Strahan. New York also signed veteran Renaldo Wynn in the offseason.

If Umenyiora was sidelined for any considerable time, the Giants could move strongside linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end. He was switched to linebacker last year so the team could put its best 11 players on the field.

I know the OP was pasting the story, but I also saw this with Jason Taylor. Neither one was "carted," which I assume actually means a cart was in use. Shotty journalism by the original source here.

Per Rotoworld:

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that Osi Umenyiora will need surgery on his injured knee and miss the entire 2008 season.

Three things this impactsWe will watch the Giants secondary be making a ton of tackles 20 yards down the field. I'd be suprised to see J Tuck get more then 6 sacks all year. Wonder if a player ever has been quadrauple teamedWinston Justice may be able to play against the Giants this year.

They almost have to move Kiwanuka back to DE. They can play Danny Clark at SLB. He is decent enough. There is no way they can leave the current DEs as is.

Giants Move LB Kiwanuka To DE, Replacing Umenyiora

Paul Schwartz, New York Post - [Full Article]

As expected, the New York Giants wasted no time determining their best course of action when confronted with an unwanted decision: Who replaces right defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who is out for the season with torn cartilage in his left knee? Mathias Kiwanuka, a natural pass-rushing defensive end converted last season strong-side linebacker, will be moved back to end, The Post has learned. It's doubtful the team would make such a drastic move if there was any chance of Michael Strahan coming out of retirement.

Danny Clark has been moved to SLB to replace Kiwanuka, with Gerris Wilkinson now a potential every-down WLB.

I liked Antonio Pierce a lot before, but now no Gibril Wilson, no Strahan and no Osi? He'll almost undoubtedly see an increase in solos if he's healthy and perhaps more room for big plays.

What about Tuck?
Assuming Strahan doesn't come back, I would venture to say that this would make things tougher on Tuck. He won't receive the benefit of having Osi on the other side, which means Tuck could see more double teams as the opposing team focuses more on stopping him with Osi gone.
