Otis diet fad of the month thread - Potato mania!!1 (1 Viewer)

I don't love every thing Michael Pollan has ever written but I really think the KISS approach he suggests with the following quote is as good as or better than any of the current diet fads: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

If you want a more specific, actionable plan, the Mediterranean diet is very sustainable and has consistently shown to reduce adverse cardiac events in adherents (http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1200303)

Atkins Diet is not a long term solution to staying in shape and maintaining a body weight you want.
your logic isn't wanted in the fad diet thread.
True...they are "fad" because they don't last and you become fat again.
then they to Paleo next year. And vegetarian the year after. Then they get desperate and go juice cleanse. Before ending up back at Adkins plus twenty pounds from four years ago.

I'm actually looking for someone to change my mind on this. I'd love to be able to eat hamburgers and steak cooked in butter every night without concern for it shortening my life.
Even if we could prove to you that unlimited dietary cholesterol and saturated fat had no adverse health consequences, why would that mean you could eat hamburgers and steak cooked in butter every night without adverse health consequences? Those foods contain a lot more than just saturated fat and cholesterol.

This lecture by Denise Minger presents a decent overview of some of the issues with eating meat.

It is quite possible (even likely, IMO) that Americans, on the whole, eat too much muscle meat.

But focusing on dietary cholesterol or even saturated fat won't make that point very well. The idea that dietary cholesterol is unhealthy (for most people) has been pretty well refuted and doesn't seem to have any real proponents among serious researchers, so far as I know. The idea that saturated fat is bad still has some prominent defenders, including Walter Willett at Harvard, who is an expert on nutrition if anybody is, and is very influential. But his position on saturated fat is becoming less widespread, and in fact we know of some cultures that get about 50% of their calories from saturated fat (in the form of coconuts) and yet who are in great overall health and are completely free of heart disease. If there's bad stuff in meat, it's very likely not the cholesterol or (IMO) the saturated fat, so it makes little sense (again IMO) to focus on those components.

It's about self control and not stuffing your face & sitting on your ###. Most people that go on a diet gain the weight back. It's about changing eating habits and exercising.

Fair enough... I defer to my core argument that his diet consisting largely of ground beef, bacon, skirt steak, cheese etc is no bueno for nutritionally ambiguous reasons :lol:

That said, I'm guessing there are more tagental factors with regards to the coconut-centric cases... could be an anti-inflammatory component or some other neutralizing factor that hasn't been studied enough yet... could be other environmental factors, etc.

My cholesterol is great. I like my heart. :shrug:

Not to discount the post as you know I have a healthy dose of respect for your posting,... but forcing the acknowledgement of variables in the nutrient profile of our diet while failing to discount other variables outlined in the article feels a bit intellectually dishonest.

If you have to drink beer then Guiness is the way to go. The original low carb, low call brew.

The stuff you can eat on Atkins is pretty cool. You will likely start to feel like crap in a few days however, just power through and it will pass.

MT and you other diet geeks thanks for your input. I was just arguing with a buddy yesterday about the no carb diet being bad for the heart. He was explaining the types of LDL and a bunch of stuff that was new to me. Even threw the "how do you win a football game" analogy at me :lol: when I said diet is all about net calories. In about 10 days I'll be looking to transition from a cal focus to a keto focus to get rid of that last 10-15lbs so keep dropping the knowledge in here :thumbup:

 
I can't think of one drawback to taking in massive amounts of saturated fat over a long period of time.
When I went low-carb back in like '06, I had bloodwork done right before I started and then again 6 months later. Talked to the doc after the first test and he scolded me pretty harshly about my cholesterol levels being so high for a guy my age. And then after 6 months of "massive amounts of saturated fat" I talked to him after the bloodwork came in. "Holy sh## how did you get your cholesterol down so fast?"

I had dropped over 40 lbs and literally every aspect of my bloodwork was significantly improved.
Same exact experience here.

All my levels went down very significantly. I'll dig up the numbers tomorrow.
Interesting. How often do you guys get bloodwork done?
I donate platelets every two weeks, and thus get my vitals checked by the Red Cross at that time. They have improved steadily each visit.

I don't know what to tell you. If you claim that high saturated fat intake is inherently unhealthy, I think pointing out several cultures that thrive on diets high in saturated fat is the exact opposite of intellectually dishonest. I think it's relevant and probative.

It's not iron-clad proof, because there's no such thing. Any observation will have alternative explanations. Are gluten-containing grains automatically inherently unhealthy? The Swiss mountaineers who thrive on a diet of mostly sourdough rye bread and dairy seem to be evidence against that notion -- or maybe cold weather is protective against grain consumption. Is seafood unhealthy? Evidence from Japan says no -- or maybe the Japanese have special genetics for tolerating fish. Are potatoes unhealthy? The Irish were known for their good health while they got the majority of their calories from potatoes -- but maybe it was the beer they drank that offset the adverse effects from potatoes. Is saturated fat unhealthy? There are numerous cultures that thrive on coconuts or dairy, which are both very high in saturated fat -- but of course there are alternative explanations.

Such observations aren't scientific studies, but that doesn't make them intellectually dishonest. In any case, if you prefer scientific studies, here's a large meta-analysis examining the relationship between saturated fat intake and cardiovascular disease. Conclusion: there isn't any. (Of course, that's not iron-clad proof, either, because there's still no such thing.)

I have to admit that you might be right about that. It's funny watching him take on a guy who's obviously being a huge tool and systematically beating him into the ground. All while ignoring the tool's little laughing emoji's and know-it-all cockiness. If I were {icon}, I'd take a week or two off from posting after that ### whooping.

It's another rehash of Lepitin vs. Ancestral Tendencies that was much better summarized in the NYT piece which was discussed here in a multi-dozen page thread nearly 2 years ago.

 
I really think the key is to not give a #### about what you eat. By that I don't mean to not care about eating healthy, I mean to not put so much emphasis on the connection between eating and taste in general. Sure, I love me a good steak...or stuffed filet of flounder...or 5 Guys Burger and fries...but really- on a day to day basis- just eating because I need to is okay by me.

It can be that utilitarian. A state of mind. More often than not I do just that. Eat and move on to other stuff. That's why Atkins worked well for me. Where it otherwise for me, I could potentially be a house. As it is- any weight gain since I was serious about my diet has been because I stopped eating healthy and started eating for taste again. My bad.

That last study was a great link, thanks for sharing.

The concern wasn't that the previous studies didn't show evidence against sat fat being an issue... it's just that they had significantly more moving parts / variance in key factors. My issue was just with saying "Sat fat isn't bad because see here it's cool with these guys who only eat coconuts / milk.. when those people were almost twice as active as americans, and were analyzed in a season of peak consumption of that item, etc. That's all. Wasn't meant to be a slight.

I'm a bit surprised by the findings but what has been shown doesn't change my stance that a diet high in less-lean animal proteins like ground beef, bacon, cheese, is inherently bad. I might have been amiss in the specific target of my ire (sat fat / cholesterol) but I've yet to see any significant study saying my overall assessment of the diet was wrong.

Unfortunately not everyone is as responsible as John Bender when it comes to their Atkins approach.... and I would be VERY wary of the approach that some take of "Eat as much bacon and cheese as you want!".

Anyways.. good discussion, I was hoping you'd Jump in Maurile. Thanks for the links. :thumbup:

If my means of killing a slow afternoon at the office offends you, I'd strongly suggest changing your perspective a bit and maybe not taking what I post so seriously. I know I usually don't. :thumbup:

What's the over / under here? 4.5 days?
I'm thinking it's more like 3.5-4, but the line is moving. Day 1 was a breeze. I feel a little like garbage this morning, and I don't know if that's because of the very low carbs yesterday or because our 4 day old is waking us up every 3 hours....
