Milestone Monday When I started this 6 weeks ago @ 183lbs, I had 2 goals. 1. Get under 170 and  2. Stick with it until April 1.

One goal down, half-way to the second.  :football:

Even though I didn't get in the competition, this thread has been great M-F motivation for me. Thanks doods.  :thumbup:

Ok time to buckle back down.  Terrible weekend.  Back at 200.   I know if I let it go up even a pound more I am in trouble.  

The lack of discipline I've shown is sickening to me.  

Today I start anew...again.

down about a pound this week. Today is my birthday and I wanted to be back below 200, but I guess three steak dinners out in a row makes that pretty tough...

Women are on track to see 8 times, 800%, growth in cancer related diagnosis and death in in the next 10 years.  Most of the cancer progress from ending smoking has been completely obliterated by obesity related cancers like stomach, throat, cervical, and colon.  Ones that leave you in much worse shape than breast cancer when you are done, and breast cancer is on the rise as well but seems mostly independent of weight gain as far as anyone can tell.

This #### is going to kill us all, and this week SI gonna put some HAEZ girls in the mag.  Because curves right and we can't hurt people's feelings.

I have an eating disorder... is that a medical condition?
I get the idea of being as healthy as you can at any size - but it seems like a crutch for 98% of the people who are in that boat and claim they want to be healthy.  Maybe I'm just not educated on how big a problem may be (shouldn't even say maybe) but I know for myself when I've been overweight and for the vast majority of people I know who are overweight they just don't do the things necessary to change.  I don't want to sound insensitive to anyone but it's my experience at least.

And I know you were joking around cave man.

 
Culdeus - what percentage of people truly have a medical condition which doesn't allow for them to be thin?  1-2%?  5%?
All I can really say on this is that I have a good friend that works as a radiologist in a lab, which also moonlights as some way that weight loss surgery patients get some type of isotope testing done on their thyroids to test for some type of cancer prior to surgery among some other markers which would make them predispositioned to obesity.  These are the fattest of the fat and yet none have ever turned up a condition that they have declined WLS on.  

I would say 1 in 10 million.  Maybe 1 in 100 million.  I mean look at pictures from times where food was scarce, the 1800s war time, etc.  How many fat people show up in those photos?  None.  We didn't evolve away and mutate into fat monsters, we got here by choice and poor public policy.

I suck at dieting.  Weekends and booze kill me.  Two weeks ago I had all you can eat and drink at the Phoenix Open for five days straight.  Was so much fun but I'm sure I put on like 5 pounds from it.  Wife going healthy now though so that'll help. 

Taking a new approach here.  I played 10 hours of softball on Saturday and am starting crossfit today.  I think I just need to start working out like I used to and that'll actually get me excited about being fit and healthy.  I know Chaka is going to yell at me, but I seriously suck at just straight up dieting when I have little to no other sources of stress relief.

You can make it as simple or as complex as you want to, but it all comes down to consistently eating well, getting plenty of rest, and managing stress levels.  No supplements needed.  Keep those things in check and you'll set yourself up for quality exercise.  Any cracks in that foundation and it gets increasingly more difficult.

It may be unpopular with some, but I think it is near impossible to achieve and maintain most goals without exercising if you're going to cheat over the weekend and/or are prone to mid-week issues (i.e. work travel).  Best case is a frustrating yo-yo but always coming up short of where you say you want to be.

 
Stephen Guyenet's book is out: The Hungry Brain. One of the very few books on the subject of overeating and obesity written by a true scientific expert in the field, not just a journalist or popularizer, and not someone with an agenda that leads to cherry-picking studies, etc.

 
Gonna be tonight before I can update.  My week was pretty terrible.  Most work I've missed in a while thanks to family issues.  Punting on even looking at a scale until next week.  And even then I travel most of this week. :kicksrock:

Lost 0.2 pounds for the week and 5.8 total since the start. 

My progress is disappointing but I am still impressed by those of you that are losing weight in bunches.  Congrats.

Left work early, feeling terrible.

Just had 2 bowls of homemade chicken soup with some crackers.  Feel a little better.  Should keep my eating to a minimum today.

Leptin Resistance: Cause or Effect of Obesity?


Obesity is characterized by increases of both fat mass and circulating leptin levels (72115116), suggesting a state of leptin resistance in which elevated leptin levels are required to overcome a defect in the leptin signaling cascade. Unlike in states of insulin resistance, in which a healthy pancreas can simply secrete more insulin as needed, increased body fat mass is required to maintain hyperleptinemia. Leptin resistance, therefore, offers a plausible mechanism to explain the defense of an elevated homeostatic “set point” for body fat mass. In support of this hypothesis, fat loss induced by caloric restriction elicits compensatory responses in obese individuals that promote the recovery of lost fat (including increased hunger and metabolic efficiency) (72115116), which can be suppressed by restoring plasma leptin concentrations to pre-fat loss levels (72).

The hypothesis that leptin resistance contributes to obesity pathogenesis is supported by evidence that rodents fed a purified, high-fat diet (HFD) acquire a striking loss of leptin sensitivity in ARC neurons (117118). Because targeted deletion of leptin receptors from any of several hypothalamic neuronal subpopulations is sufficient to cause obesity in mice (119120), the acquisition of hypothalamic leptin resistance is a plausible explanation for the defense of elevated body fatness in animal models of diet-induced obesity (DIO). Genetic interventions that prevent hypothalamic leptin resistance also protect against DIO (121125), suggesting that the former is required for the latter to occur. Moreover, leptin resistance is detectable in ARC neurons even after relatively short periods of HFD feeding, before substantial fat gain (118). At the cellular level, inflammatory signaling has emerged as a potentially important mediator of leptin resistance (Fig. 2) (126). An induction of proinflammatory cytokines and other markers of inflammation is clearly evident in the hypothalamus of rodents with DIO (122126) and, just as inflammation in peripheral tissues contributes to obesity-induced insulin resistance, cellular inflammatory signaling also potently inhibits leptin signal transduction in neurons (122125).
