Otis's Suit Epiphany (2 Viewers)

Got the two suits (a Black w/ textured "striping" Carr and a SWEET subtle dark green (almost looks grey, hard to explain) Jack Victor), plus a very comfy pair of Vince Camuto's (RIP gb) for like 500-600 bucks all in.

Now need a tailor. Haven't been really happy with one since the guy I grew up with retired 7 or 8 years ago. <_<

I will never go to joseph a bank again. I usually hit up the clearance suit rack at Macy's and order it in my size. Can't beat that IMO.

Has anyone tried one of those 4-way stretch suits like XSuit or Sene?

Am I a fool for thinking about getting one of these 4-way stretch suits and believing it might actually look good enough to pull off as professional attire? All these stretch suit companies seem to be online only so I can go try one on or look at one in person.

Yes, this is a super old thread bump. Seemed like it had the most suit discussion vs. others. Merge or redirect me if there is a better thread for Suit talk.

I gotta tell you that if it’s not wool it won’t look right. Linen maybe in summer, seersucker if casual, but always wool.

You're not a fool as the ads they run are very good.

But I'd stick with a traditional fabric for a suit if you're talking professional attire.

Budgets are always a personal thing. I like the JCrew suits. Personally I think Sid Mashburn hits the best mix of value and quality and is more my vibe. https://shopmashburn.com/collections/sid-mashburn-suits-tuxedos

I'm not an expert by any means but I've owned a couple Jos A Banks suits over the years and my two cents is to keep an eye on which "collection" you're buying from as they do vary in quality quite a bit from the low end collections to the top. I know at least one of mine is the "Reserve" collection and the quality is pretty good at a great price - during one of their seemingly constant clearance sales. Stick to 100% wool and pay attention to what kind of wool is listed in the description. Its not terrible if there is a small amount of synthetic fabric mixed in - like 2%-3% or something. Not long ago I got a pair of jeans and a couple dress shirts from them and they are very nice at about $25 each. Also, and I know this makes me seem extremely vain, but when I got the suits fitted I asked my tailor to remove the Jos A. Banks branding labels on the jacket liner. She laughed but did it for me. I guess I didn't want to be in a meeting and take off my jacket and have everyone in the room see that label on my jacket just out of pure vanity.

If you get just one, go charcoal.

If you get a 2nd, go navy.

Get it fitted properly (they do in store tailoring), get one of the Sid Mashburn white dress shirts that fit right, a decent belt, a good pair of leather black shoes, and you'll be better dressed than 95% of the people you run into.
Appreciate the replies and advice. I'll check those out. I'm definitely looking for solid navy. Maybe a black one that could pass for a black tie events.

I have a navy Coppley with a real slight pattern and a charcoal faint striped Zegna. I got these years ago, gained some weight, now I'm back down in range to maybe wear them again with some tailoring. Had a couple of other lesser name suits that are too big now and look sloppy and not really worth paying money to tailor so that's kind of why I'm looking. I for sure need some new black shoes too.

Another thought on this @beef

Some of this is the "buy fewer but better things" thing.

A nice Sid Mashburn Virgil #3 in charcoal here is $1,800. https://shopmashburn.com/collection...-kincaid-no-3-suit-charcoal-high-twist-s38455

That's a lot of money. But my guess is you'd be happier with it than 3 suits that cost $600 each. You'll look better and I bet feel better in it.

Just my take. But I'm getting more into the "fewer but better" idea.

Absolutely! I'm at the "buy fewer but better" phase in my life. I used to be real thrifty, but that's where I regret things now. Saving a few bucks, only to replace it later.

If you're comfortable buying online, another good option that's in a lower price range and has good quality and value is Spier and Mackay.

Charcoal is my #2. Your 1.1 should be Midnight Blue. Works for all types of occasions ( I wear it to business stuff, weddings, funerals, etc) and looks a lot better than Navy or Black. Cosign with the importance of tailoring.
