Cowboys brass, Owens reach workout agreement

01:55 PM CDT on Thursday, April 20, 2006

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – Owner Jerry Jones said receiver Terrell Owens and coach Bill Parcells have reached an agreement regarding his off-season workouts.

Jones declined to divulge the details of the agreement.

This is not an unprecedented move. In Larry Allen's final two off-seasons with the Cowboys, he did his own weight-lifting program that was built around bench presses instead of the clean and jerks that Parcells prefers, but did the same cardiovascular workouts as his teammates.

Although off-season workouts are voluntary, Parcells emphasizes them. Players must complete 40 workouts in a 10-week period that began in March.

Owens attendance in the club's off-season workouts has been sporadic, although there has never been an issue regarding his conditioning or work ethic. Still, Parcells wants the players to participate in the program so he can monitor their conditioning and the players can bond with their teammates.

"Bill and T.O. have worked that out and they're on the same page," Jones said. "It's not an issue. All I can and should say is that everyone is comfortable with the way it's working."

I read it. What I got was this: T.O. remains a high maintenance prima donna that could not give his new and highly repected coach some respect on this issue. Instead, in his first act of fitting in with his new team he demanded, and got, special treatment, treatment that before was reserved for Cowboy legends, with injury, and who had served the franchise for a dozen years. Parcells refused to comment and Jerry Jones in an attempt to hide the growing rift again spoke on behalf of Parcells since he can not trust what might come out of Parcells' rightfully disgusted mouth.

What if TOs workout is better than Parcells workout? It doesnt seem like Parcell's workouts have created any TO-like specimens.

This has nothing to do with getting into shape. T.O. will be in shape. He will be a Shannon Sharpe, David Boston, Thomas Jones type specimen. This has everythinhg to do with T.O. needing special handling. This has to do with Parcells having no comment when usually he cannot shut up, and with Jerry Jones speaking the company line for Parcells. Already it is clear tht Parcells is no longer the man. In this, his lame duck season, he is taking a back seat to Jerry Jones. This is, in my mind, significant because Jones has never believed in discipline and it was that pervasive attitude that lead to the Cowboys last downfall. Indeed Jones brought Parcells in for the discipline he offered and now he is undercutting the same. This trainwreck is, I believe, closer than people think.

Im being devils advocate here ... even though I heart TO ...If you knew something you did put yourself in a position to be more successful than your boss told you to do, what choice would you make?

That philosophy has worked out well for him in the past.

Nah, if Parcells could handle that crackhead Lawrence Taylor then he can handle TO.

I'm glad you all are more concerned about this than Jones or Parcells.
It is mostly Giants, Eagles and Foreskin fans who are in denial of what T.O. will do to them when the season starts. The Cowboys are going to own that division, I understand that it is hard for the others to face because the last time we owned the division, we came away with three rings. ;)
