Forget throwback uniforms, the Packers against the Eagles really went back in time, at least for a team that has run some variation of the WC offense for over 15 years

Even from the Shotgun the backfield often had a Offset I type of formation (rb to the side of Rodgers, fb to the other side and up formation

It resulted in a record day for James Starks, for the most yards in a playoff game by a rookie GB RB (123y)

Now the Pack has run these offensive sets before this season, but not to this extent. Play after play the Pack had two fb or a fb and a te in the backfield to block.

So, oh wise SP, was this a one off affair, or do you think that this is a trend for the Packers, and perhaps others?

Philly's defense offered up a smallish front, and the Packers game planned to exploit it with a power run game. Obviously, most teams are terrified of the Packers passing attack, and rarely put an extra defender in the box. Even after Philly did start putting 8 in the box however, the Packers still found success running on them. Atlanta also offers up a smaller front, and have given up 4.6 yards per carry this year (25th in the NFL). They've also allowed opposing teams to complete 65% of their passes (only 3 teams allowed more). With perfect conditions in the dome, I'd expect the Packers to pass more than last week, but I think we'll still see plenty of Starks and the power run game.

IMHO, the offensive game plan was specific to the Eagles, but could obviously be used against any team that has a similar defensive situation (i.e. not very strong vs. the run and a smaller defensive front). Establishing the run game is even more important in the playoffs than in the regular season. As such I expect the Packers to keep using variation of their power running formations - especially as they were so succesful.

Agreed. And interestingly enough, they flip flopped Clifton and Bulaga on a few different formation to take advantage of Bulaga's run blocking.

Who knows what McCarthy will do this weekend? He rarely features the same looks twice in a season, much less in consecutive weeks, but if he thinks it will work against the Falcons I'm sure it will be in his gameplan. He's had the three back set in his offense for a few years now, but we've never seen it to that extent. McGinn noted that Ryan Grant's injury came on a run from that same set against the Eagles in week 1.
