I believe this game opened up at -5.5 but the line came down because of all the injuries to the Lions DL on Thanksgiving.

Romeo Dobbs is still in the protocol but it looks like he is trending to play.

Jaire Alexander, who knows, always difficult to say if he is going to be ready. LaFleur didn't offer any insight in his last presser.

Since their first meeting Week 9, the Packers had a bye week 10, and this will be their 4th game in 18 days. Their 3-game winning streak came against 3 teams with losing records who are a combined 14-22.

Same for the Lions - 4th game in 18 days - and their bye week was back in Week 5. Since the last meeting:
  • Week 10 - at Houston SNF Goff threw 5 interceptions, Lions came back from a 23-7 halftime deficit to win 26-23 on a walk off 52 yard FG by Jake Bates (who also hit a 58 yarder with 5:01 left.)
  • Week 11 - Jacksonville 52-6 largest win margin in franchise history, team record 645 yards total offense, scored 7 touchdowns on their first 7 possessions.
  • Week 12 - at Indianapolis 24-6. On the Colts last 7 possessions, they ran 25 plays and gained 85 yards, finishing the day 11/28 passing, including 4 of their last 17 attempts.
  • Week 13 - Chicago 23-20. Tale of two halves. Chicago got it's first FD with less than a minute left in the first half. Detroit outgained the Bears 274-38. In the second half, Chicago scored on 3 of their first 4 possessions, while Detroit - after matching the Bears first TD with a 79 yard drive - had two punts and their first missed FGA of the season as the Bears climbed back into it. Chicago outscored the Lions 20-7 in the final 30 minutes, 13-0 in the 4th quarter, before imploding during a wild final sequence when they were able to run only one play in the last 32 seconds despite having a timeout remaining.
In the last 4 games, Detroit has given up 81-271-1 on run defense. They went 12 quarters - 2nd half at Hou, all 4 quarters of Week 11 & 12, and the 1st half vs Chi - without surrendering a touchdown on defense.

On offense since Week 9, Detroit's rushing attack has totaled 141-632-7 in the last 4 weeks. Since the bad game in Texas, Goff has gone 74/103 (71.8%) with 5 TDs and no turnovers in the last 3 games.

The Lions had the 7th best Overall DVOA through 12 weeks since 1979, behind only 2007 NE, 1985 CHI, 1998 DEN, 1991 WAS, 1995 DAL and 2018 KC. Their subpar performance on Thanksgiving has now knocked them out of the Top Ten overall DVOA since 1979.

I, of course, cannot stand the Green Bay Packers. They were in our way for 30 years.

But I like Matt LaFleur. He's from Mount Pleasant, MI, where his dad was a starting LB on the CMU 1974 national champion team, and then he was a defensive assistant for 22 years. His dad was friends with my uncle. I remember Matt deciding to go to Western Michigan, but they tried to convert him to WR. He transferred to Saginaw Valley State and led his team to the D-II playoffs three years in a row. His 2 starting WRs went on to play 17 seasons in the NFL between them.

LaFleur fell off my radar for a couple years as he went through a couple grad assistant and low level college coaching jobs (2 memorable years under Chip Kelly at CMU.) He was the offensive coordinator at tiny Ashland College in Ohio when his buddy Robert Saleh, who roomed with him when he was a grad assistant for Kelly, called him up and said they might have an opening. That 2008 Houston Texans team was coached by Gary Kubiak, who had just promoted Kyle Shanahan to his OC. Their youngest offensive assistants were LaFleur and a skinny kid from Yale by the name of Mike McDaniel.

Thanks for the post @BobbyLayne Much appreciated.
No weather concerns with Dome, but Noise will be historic and potentially distracting for GB.
The Det DL Injuries give me pause and I can see a high scoring shootout game (like 42-38 Pit/Cin game this past week).

This game means a lot to both!

The fans have been amazing the last 3 years.

Jaire and Doubs should be back for GB-- still will be without Edge cooper our most athletic LB but all-in-all, a relatively healthy team for week 14.

Hopefully we can give you guys a game

I generally don’t predict scores. I don’t gamble, it doesn’t have any meaning for me personally.

I hope the Packers come out with intensity and give us everything they’ve got. The more hard games we play now makes us stronger for the playoffs. You’re always going to face adversity.

When (not if) things go sideways, that’s a test of who you are as a team. Just looking at the Lions 2024 season, I am more impressed with hard games than blowouts. To me overcoming 5 interceptions and being down 16 at the half, or coming up with 3 sacks on the final drive of the game after you’ve been outscored 20-0 in the half and are hanging on - that’s the stuff that battle tests a team’s perseverance.

That is the kind stuff champions pull off. Winning blowouts by 38+ 3 times in a season is some impressive glitter but it’s still just one win,

Of the 388 NFL games this year, 307 have been decided by 8 points or less.

79.12% of games come down to one score.

Green Bay beat Detroit in Ford Field 53 weeks ago. They’re a better team this year than last.

I fear that the Detroit run game will simply steamroll a Packers D that has been good against the run this season, but IMO largely overrated due to facing mediocre teams. If Detroit’s OC is smart — and he is — we will see a lot of swing passes out of the backfield, and a bunch of 8-12 yard passes in the middle of the field to ARSB and LaPorta, both of whom will see a wide open center of the field.

Jordan Love has been resilient all season, but he hasn’t been particularly good. After a great 2nd half of the 2023 season, Love is back to his old trick of 2-3 critical throws each game that are way too high, often resulting in INTs. This was a knock on him in his early years, it looked like he figured it out last year, but once again his footwork is off……and when that happens, he throws high. I get that he’s got the hardest job in sports — but he simply has to do better.

I truly hope for a good game, but expect a blowout in favor of Detroit.

Great game to kick off week 14
A big fantasy week for many of us
Nice that The NFL gave both teams the same week to prepare after Turkey Day
Lions defense keeps taking hits and it showed in the second half of last weeks game
But with a week to prepare I think they play better this week despite the injuries
Green Bay is a solid overall team and playing well
I'd still like to see a more consistent Jordan Love
If he has one of his not so good halves in this game it will cost The Packers
Both teams run the ball well and I think that's the key to this game
Whoever controls the line of scrimmage with the run game will win
So with that one two punch The Lions have in the backfield
And being at home
I give The Lions the edge in a big division matchup that should be fun to watch
My pick...

Detroit Lions- 27
Green Bay Packers- 23

Doubs yes, Jaire? With them still “evaluating” I think its 50/50 at best that he plays.

Handy guide to keep track of all the new numbers you’ll see on Thursday:
  • #25 Jamaal Adams
  • #66 Myles Adams
  • #10 Kwon Alexander
  • #43 David Long
  • #96 Brodric Martin
  • #4 Emmanuel Moseley
  • #69 Al-Quadin Muhammad -
  • #53 Trevor Nowaske
  • #99 Za’Derius Smith
  • #47 Ezekiel Turner
  • #78 Jonah Williams
Bolded are the 4 new guys signed after Thanksgiving. MCDC said they’ll all get snaps on Thursday night.

Question: if Jacobs is out for Green Bay, or a back-up is needed to rest him......who would that be? E.Wilson or Brooks?

you've learned well, luke.

Doubs yes, Jaire? With them still “evaluating” I think its 50/50 at best that he plays.

I don't expect to see Jaire and even if he plays he won't be near 100%. Ben Johnson's hardest decision will be whether to torch this defense by run or pass as both will be there for the taking.

Experience seems to show if Jaire doesn’t feel 100%, he doesn’t play. Exception may have been a few weeks ago when he them had to leave to the game again early after aggravating the knee.

practiced 3x in a row this week so hes either prepping to play or theyre showing him as practicing to throw detroit off?

I think hes going to try and play. We will see.

I just hope Ben & detroit fans stay humble-- It aint easy winning Super Bowls and thats what they all play for and we all root for. They should take it home this year.... but if they don't?? Things change really fast in the NFL. Look at how quickly it ended in SEA and SF.

I doubt Jaire plays this week. They need him to be 100% for the playoffs and they are notoriously conservative when it comes to injury.

Only laying 3 1/2, at home??? So on a neutral field, Vegas has these two teams almost evenly matched. Even with some injuries that is very little respect for the kitty cats.

Caleb torched the Lions in the second half and I think that carries over to this game. Love will have a field day. Lions should win on the ground. GB 38-31

I’m surprised with the Detroit blowout predictions with all the defensive injuries. I’m completely avoiding betting this game.

[Justin Rogers]

Allen Park - These days, the Detroit Lions defense is a M*A*S*H unit. But there’s no time to cry over spilled milk during the NFL season. The unit still has to go out there on Sunday — or in the case of the past two weeks, Thursday — and put its 11 best on the field and play the game.

This week, against Green Bay, some of those 11 might be taking their first snaps for Detroit. The Lions added four defensive players this weekend, poaching veterans Kwon Alexander, Jonah Williams and Myles Adams off other teams’ practice squads while adding former All-Pro safety Jamal Adams to their practice squad.

And while the turnaround to get ready for a Thursday matchup might seem unrealistic, the Lions don’t really have a choice. So even though those players won’t be able to digest the entire playbook, there’s one thing defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is stressing above all else to his new recruits.

“We can shrink the playbook down as much as we want, but it’s the way that you play that’s the most important," Glenn said. "Most of the guys that we bring in, they understand that and we try to make sure that we emphasize that as much as possible. …Here’s a saying that we say in our defense room, it’s not what we play, it’s how we play.

“If I can go in with four or five calls and they can play fast, they can play physical, they can play violent, that overcomes a lot of scheme,” Glenn continued. “You can have as much scheme as you want, but players make the scheme. Actually, players make the style of play better than the scheme if you think about it the right way and our guys do a good job of that.”

Still, the Lions are mitigating leaving too much to chance by specifically targeting players they know. Linebacker Kwon Alexander, signed off Denver’s practice squad, was with coach Dan Campbell and Glenn in New Orleans. Defensive lineman Jonah Williams was scouted by general manager Brad Holmes when the Rams added the defender as an undrafted free agent out of Weber State in 2020. And defensive tackle Myles Adams, who is coming over from Seattle’s practice squad, played at Rice when Detroit’s assistant defensive line coach Cam Davis was a graduate assistant at the program.

Davis and some of Detroit's other lower-level defensive assistant coaches are another key cog in the onboarding process. When the team acquired Za’Darius Smith in a trade earlier this month, it was Davis who spent extra hours working with the veteran pass rusher to accelerate his understanding of the scheme and his fit within it.

This week, Davis, Shaun Dion Hamilton, Jim O'Neil and David Corrao will be among those working overtime to ensure the newcomers are ready to go.

“Those guys are huge and it’s hard for me to actually put into words exactly what those guys mean to me and how they go about doing their business because there is a lot on their plate,” Glenn said. “I expect a lot from them and my job is to prep them and get them ready for the next opportunity that they’ll get if that’s going to be a true position coach or if that’s actually transitioning to a coordinator sometime.

“…They will grind with these guys as much as they can to get them to understand exactly what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “They know exactly the vision that I have on defense, and they coach it exactly like I see it. That’s a good thing. Once you have guys across the board that’s on the page, they know exactly what I’m looking for and they coach it to that point, all I can do is give those guys props because they do a hell of a job and I’m glad they’re on my side.”

Game of the year for me. So many implications based on the outcome of this game. Absolutely hyped up for this one! With wife heading out of town Thursday afternoon and kids asleep, I’ll be able to watch most of this in peace.

Work Xmas party on Thursday, I have a feeling I'll be ducking out early to catch this game.

Question: if Jacobs is out for Green Bay, or a back-up is needed to rest him......who would that be? E.Wilson or Brooks?
Highly doubt Jacobs sits out this game. If so, I think Brooks may get the carries with Wilson being the 3rd down guy.

I have the top 2 as being Lions then Bills, then flip a coin between Eagles & Packers, then a small gap to Ravens-Vikings.

Those are the 6 legitimate SB contenders in my mind.

Next 5 weeks will bring our divergent opinions into sharper focus.
No Chiefs??

I get they have looked pretty fraudulent in their wins, but until somebody defeats Mahomes in the playoffs I'm keeping them in a top contender tier.

Realistically, don’t think they make the AFCCG. Defense has been regressing, no explosive playmakers. They’re the B2B champs and have won 3 out of the last 4, so I can appreciate the view they deserve to be in the conversation.

That said, with Mahomes and Reid, I agree they always have a chance. And I’ll add Chris Jones because he has such a knack for the timely havoc play.

I don’t think it’s their year. I don’t mean any disrespect, but they have the worst point differential ever for an 11-1, and by DVOA they’re I think the third worst 11-1 team since 1979.

The Chiefs are elite in getting the call from the crew in the last 4 minutes, so we should factor that in as well. They’ll be a tough out for whoever beats them. Bills, Steelers & Ravens are all better teams.
