Packers-Lions Preview

DETROIT (AP)

Detroit and Green Bay, longtime rivals and current contenders, will have much at stake when they meet Thursday night in the Motor City.

The NFC-leading Lions (11-1) are aiming to stay ahead of Philadelphia (10-2) in the race for the conference's best record and Minnesota (10-2) in the NFC North with a win against the Packers. Detroit can also clinch a spot in the playoffs with an 11th straight victory that would set a franchise record.

“We’re in playoff football right now,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “This is the type of stuff that you live for and it’s also the type of stuff that gets you ready for the tournament.”
Green Bay (9-3) also has a lot to play for because it can pull within a game of the Lions if it can split the season series with a slight upset as 3 1/2-point underdogs.

“This game is going to be important for us moving forward toward the end of this thing and we’re going to treat it as such,” Packers safety Xavier McKinney said.

Green Bay’s ability to slow down Detroit’s run game might be pivotal. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, the first teammates in league history to run for at least 10 touchdowns in consecutive seasons, have combined to average more than 140 yards on the ground per game. The Packers limited San Francisco's Christian McCaffrey to 31 yards on 11 attempts and held Miami to 39 yards rushing in their past two games. It was the first time since 1995, and just the second time since 1950, that they gave up fewer than 45 yards rushing in two straight weeks. Montgomery ran 17 times for 73 yards and Gibbs had 65 yards rushing and a touchdown on 11 carries last month at Green Bay.

“They played Montgomery the whole first half and then the second half they came with Gibbs,” McKinney recalled. “They got a good 1-2 punch.”

Home field has not been an advantage in the series lately. The road team has won four straight games, going back to Detroit closing the 2022 regular season and Aaron Rodgers' career with the Packers in a 20-16 win at Lambeau Field. Green Bay has won five straight NFC North road games, including last year at Detroit on Thanksgiving.

McKinney and Lions safety Kerby Joseph each have an NFL -high seven interceptions, leading the rest of the league by at least two. Joseph had a pick-6 in the most recent meeting against Green Bay and has picked off four passes in four games against the Packers. “He’s a ballhawk,” Packers quarterback Jordan Love said. “He’s going to make the plays when the ball’s in the air, so he’s definitely a guy you’ve got to know where he’s at.”

Lions coach Dan Campbell was taken aback at a news conference recently when a reporter informed him Gibbs had a post on social media showing some of the team's strategy. “I'd rather our stuff not be out there,” Campbell said. Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur feels the same way, though he said it doesn't provide a competitive edge to see another team's terminology on a whiteboard. “Guys understand that nobody wants their information out there for the whole world to see, so we try to keep everything in house here,” LaFleur said. “But I don’t think it’s like the end of the world, either.”

Both teams will play a third game in 12 days. “How the whole organization has handled this has been really impressive,” said Packers defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness, who had a sack in each of his past two games. After the game, each team will get a minibye break. The Lions will host the AFC East champion Buffalo Bills on Dec. 15 and Green Bay plays at Seattle later that night.

a rare good game on Thursday night

Wes Hodkiewicz
@WesHod

Per NFL Research, tomorrow's game between the #Packers and Lions features the highest combined win percentage (.833) between two teams in any Thursday game in December or later in NFL history.
It's tied for fourth-highest win % in any primetime game played in December or later.
Since both played last Thursday, there is no short week either. Can’t wait.

Projected Detroit Lions defensive starters Week 14 TNF v GB:

DE Za'Darius Smith, Al-Quadin Muhammad
DT Alim McNeill and Brodric Martin (or Chris Smith?
)LB Jack Campbell and David Long (Turner? Niemann? I don't know)
DBs Top 5 ready to roll

Outside of Muhammad and Martin, I fell good about the defense. The depth could be an issue. I am kind of worried about the OL without Decker. If anyone else gets banged up, it will be a problem.

AQ had 6 pressures v TEN. 5 pressures on Thanksgiving, with a sack + a PBU on the Bears final drive. He’s playing at least as well as Davenport was.

Thank You Bobby for doing all this, you enhance the games each and every week for the Lions with your tremendous amount of depth and knowledge
I know everyone looks forward to them
GL tomorrow night, I'll have it on while we celebrate my Mother In Law's 70th Birthday

-We did pretty good tonight on the pre-party I gotta say, had her in bed asleep by 8:30-9:00...fine red wine does the trick every time

51.5 is a huge number. Guessing that means we’re going over that. 30-27 Jake Bates walk off.
I love the conviction, I do, and also lean over, but after all these injuries on D popped up it makes me think Detroit should/will try and keep that unit off the field with more ball control and grind the clock some. At least maybe not their typical balls-out offense, ha!

Not knowing Detroit well enough I'll now defer to BobbyLayne to get his thoughts on how plausible that may be.

Well Bob?

Makes good sense they'd prefer to keep the D off the field by stringing together some long drives. Pretty sure Matt LaFleur is thinking the same thing for his offense.

GB lost the middle 8 the first time around. Game was close, 10-3, when Detroit hit a FG with under a minute to go in the first half. Two plays later Love made a horrible decision while being blitzed and Joseph took a pick 6 to the house with 32 seconds left. Then Detroit came out and had a lengthy 70 yard drive to go up 24-3 with 9-1/2 left in the 3rd.

They stopped GB in the red zone a few times, forcing them to settle for FGs and turning it over on downs late in the game when Jacobs got stuffed on a 4th & 1. After GB finally scored a TD (+ 2 pt conv) with around 4 minutes left, they never saw the ball again. Montgomery picked up four first downs and they knelt it out.

Green Bay abandoned the run once they went down big. Their running backs averaged 7.15 and had 111 yards after contact. Jordan Love played terrible but I think we can attribute that, at least partially, to the groin injury he was dealing with (he had missed half of the previous game, healed up during the bye week.) Plus they had like 10 penalties. I know they've been talking this week like it wasn't what Detroit did to us, we were just our own worst enemy. Love had 3 fumbles in the rain (none lost.) It was just one of those weeks, not much was going right.

Road teams have won the last four meetings going back to the last game of the 2022 season when Detroit kept Green Bay out of the playoffs by winning the last SNF game of the season.

It's a pretty popular narrative this week that Detroit has just had too much attrition, no way they can play the level of defense they have played all year, just too many good pieces missing rn. Well they still got Alim McNeill, Za'Darius Smith, Jack Campbell, and their 5 best DBs. They have an advantage at P & PK, Packers have a big advantage at returner with Kalif Raymond on IR.

Coaching: two of the best, that seems like a push.

Packers are missing their best corner + one of their better LB. Doubs is out, Detroit's offense is healthy except for Decker (Dan Skipper will make his 3rd start at LT - they'll give him help by having the RB/TE chip the edge on the way out.

Green Bay struggled in the red zone Week 9. After that game they were 28th in RZ efficiency. They have been at over 65% in the 3 games since, climbing up 11 places in RZ offense. They're playing well and come in with a lot of confidence. Really controlled the game the last time they visited Ford Field.

Big challenge for Aaron Glenn and the defense. We'll see how it plays out. I have a feeling the new faces are going to working with a simplified set of rules, they're trying to keep things simple for the guys who have been in the building less than a week. One of the most important "rules" in Glenn's defense is staying in your rush lane, setting the edge, and doing your assignment. When you try to do too much - like do the job of the guy next to you because he's new or your new and the trust factor hasn't been developed - that's when teams start gashing us on the ground. It's a very interdependent style of defense and when you don't have cohesion it just doesn't work very well.

Both teams had trouble generating pressure in the last meeting. I'm not too worried about the back end, they have been playing lights out. PFF has Detroit as the 4th best coverage unit in the NFL. Carlton Davis III has been stellar, Terrion Arnold gets better every week, and Branch + Joseph are the best safety combo in the game rn. Amik Robertson will be the one on Reed most of the night although they might work in Emmanuel Moseley some.

Seems like the kind of game that will come down to which OL is winning the battle and which team is running more effectively.

Run defense was my biggest concern and it's even more of a concern with Reader out. Everyone has to step up. But as you mentioned, there are plenty of playmakers still playing on the defense.

I expect a close game and I'm glad we are playing at home.

Yeah, gap integrity is going to be key. Will be interesting to see if they give big boy Brodric a shot or throw someone else inside alongside McNeill. AQ Muhammed has had a couple strong games, think he’ll be the edge opposite Z.

I’m really not sure who they will put beside Jack this week. Ezekiel Turner played well vs the Bears. But they probably trust Norman or Nowaske more atm.

I’m dubious Jamal Adams has much left in the tank, but Kwon Alexander was playing well for Denver in 2-3 games they called him up. I know he was a guy Dan/AG worked with before in New Orleans

Green Bay +3.5 seems too easy, so it's probably not.

Feel like both teams will want to run the ball which may slow down the game a bit and also go under...so it probably wont.

DET 31, GB 27

As an aside, any GB homers know who is the better handcuff for Jacobs? E. Wilson or C. Brooks?

All I care about anymore is a game with few flags.

The NFL has turned into a game where fans can't even cheer until they know a flag isn't coming out. That's not good.

I swear every time we make a 3rd down stop, I reflexively look top right of the score chryon

:penalty:

Packers by 7
I also feel like the Lions are due for a let down before the Playoffs start, the Packers seems like a good week where they could lose a close one and use it as motivation for the rest of the year. How often are we discussing an 11-1 Lions team?

And there are 2 teams right on their heels in their own division

Referee for Packers at Lions — John Hussey

His crew averages the second fewest flags this season

Good news IMO, this is going to be a very physical game & I would hate to see a lot of laundry out there tonight
This is exactly what I'm talking about, had no idea that Hussey was light on throwing flags but it seems to fit his personality during the games
It should provide for a good flow during the game.

I think it cold go either way, I'd be mildly surprised if either of them blew the doors off the other.
I love a good physical football game, sounds ripe for the RB duo from Detroit and Jacobs has been great all year for the Packers, like to see some smash mouth football at times tonight and then set up play action both ways to rip the cover off the secondary in these defenses.

With Dan Campbell being the coach, the type of players this team has, and it being a division game, there is zero chance of a letdown.

Might as well throw one on every play and then just wait for replay assist to fix it. Wonder how long it will be before we start seeing flags come out after plays are completely over?

As someone who would allow most other uniform choices I wish they would ban yellow shoes, I keep thinking it's a flag on the field.

Heading into tonight’s pivotal Packers-Lions game, no other NFL team has more than seven defensive players on injured reserve; Detroit has 13.

Going light. Was sure it would be Mo+Jamal+a DL.

Anyway, makes me wonder if the other teams are accurate.

Does that mean that they had to make the PB for the team that drafted them?

ETA: Like Slay and Swift made the PB for Philly but weren't drafted by them.

Pretty much.

Stop calling penalties like Illegal man downfield if they are not egregious and don't impact the play. I get if it's obvious, but seeing a lot of barely past the line or penalties for illegal formation when the OL man is about 6 inches from where he is supposed to be. Hard to watch and maddening when a big FF play is wiped out when there was no direct impact on the play.

Should be an interesting game. I feel like both teams would be wise to adopt a more pass heavy approach than normal given how banged up both secondaries are.

Green Bay should really be getting Tucker Kraft matched up with David Long, who is a liability in coverage. I also think Jayden Reed vs Amik Robertson is a very winnable matchup for GB, if they ever decide to give Reed more than 6 targets. I could also see this being a week where Christian Watson gets deep.

For the Lions, Jaire Alexander and Corey Ballentine being out, in theory, should mean JaMo and Amon-Ra open all day, but I do wonder if they'll feel comfortable cutting it loose. Rookie Safety Javon Bullard has been manning the slot due to injuries, which feels like a recipe for a 10-catch game for Amon-Ra, unless he gets a ton of help, which feels unlikely given the priority of stopping the Lions running game.

This is a coin flip for me, as the Lions are really banged up, and the Packers are actually much better built for a game indoors than they were for the rainstorm of the previous meeting.

Lions Inactives for tonight:
  • Reader (shoulder)
  • Onwuzurike (knee)
  • Paschal (knee)
  • Decker (knee)
  • Manu
  • Awosika
  • Moseley
Moseley draws the short straw with needing so much support elsewhere.

Packers inactives
  • CB Jaire Alexander
  • CB Corey Ballentine
  • LB Edgerrin Cooper
  • OL Jacob Monk
  • WR Romeo Doubs

Concerned for my Lions tonight, tough destroying a division rival on the road and coming back and beating them at home. Still think the Lions pull this off but GB covers. Also betting on the overs for both teams and the players, let's have fun!!

Do not like the Lions uniform choices this year. Hate the all white, hate the all blue unless it is the throwbacks, love the all grey, favorite is the classic road white jersey with grey pants. Bottom line only have grey/silver pants.
