Packers Daily Briefing 04.29.09: Favre edition

By Greg A. Bedard of the Journal Sentinel

Apr. 29, 2009 9:31 a.m.

Like the swallows returning to the cliffs of San Juan Capistrano, spring in Wisconsin is marked by speculation about a certain Mississippian's tractor-riding habits.

Here we go. Again.

In an obviously choreorgraphed move to maximize publicity -- immediately after the NFL Draft and during a dead point for league news -- Brett Lorenzo Favre was released from the New York Jets.

Favre and his agent, Bus Cook, requested Favre's release. It now means he is free to sign with any other team without anyone having to pay a penalty to the Packers.

So if Favre starts scratching again, he's back in with a twirl of the fax machine in Roger Goodell's office.

Favre said the procedural move does not mean he is returning to the game.

"Nothing has changed," Favre said in a statement. "At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."

Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger, who broke the story, has some more background this morning, including these tidbits from a Jets source:

This is the second time Favre's camp asked for his release since February. With Mark Sanchez in the fold, they thought they could pressure the Jets a little bit more.

"Secondly, the Jets didn't want any "Favre drama" hanging over their heads with Sanchez trying to find his way. If Sanchez struggled this summer in training camp, for instance, the club didn't want the specter of a possible return by Favre hanging over their heads."

"Sure, the Jets didn't have to grant Favre his wish, but they had nothing to gain by holding onto him and trying to get some compensation (he cost them a third-round pick) if a team wanted to sign him. They felt a mid-round draft pick (at best) wasn't worth the headache."

Here are my thoughts on the topic:

Favre keeps having these itches. Must be the Mississippi humidity. Isn't there any medication for it? Please?

Favre lied repeatedly last year about his interest in coming back after his first retirement.

There are now three possible outcomes: 1) Favre stays retired; 2) Favre signs a one-day contract to retire as a Packer and then has his jersey retired on opening night; 3) Favre returns to quarterback the Minnesota Vikings.

The second option is probably the longest at this point. Nothing I've heard has indicated there's been a softening of the hard feelings against Ted Thompson in the Favre camp. In fact, a Favre source said as far as he knows, the feelings are as hard as ever.

If Favre really wasn't coming back or had no interest in coming back, he could have just said: "Despite this move, there is zero chance I'm returning to the game. I'm done. I'm not changing my mind." But he didn't. His statement were poured over. Everyone in his camp knew what the reaction would be. They still went ahead with those ambiguous words.

The Vikings have about $14 million in cap space even with the rookie pool factored in.

The Vikings have only one game in cold-weather -- Favre's major weakness as 39 years old -- all of next season: Dec. 28 at Chicago. Five of Minnesota's final eight games are in the Metrodome. The other away games are at Arizona and Carolina.

With Adrian Peterson in the backfield, Bernard Berrian and Percy Harvin to throw to, West Coast offense buddies Darrell Bevell and Brad Childress to deal with, the Vikings have to be tempting.

Having Favre in the fold can't hurt ticket sales or the team's pursuit of a new stadium, which is needed for the Vikings to remain there.

People in Favre's camp badly wanted him to gain his release last year so he could play for the Vikings and "stick it" to Thompson.

There is still the issue of the tear in Favre's biceps tendon. Jets doctors said he should have surgery if he wanted to return. Favre, as far as anyone knows, did not have surgery. That being said, Dr. James Andrews' office is a short drive for Favre. The injury can also heal with rest. But it wouldn't be healed by now.

I'm wondering how much Favre fans can take. Obviously this constant back and forth has to be draining, and the thought of Favre in purple nauseating.

When Zach Thomas had a chance to go to the New England Patriots, he said no because of how weird it would be and how he couldn't do that to his Dolphins. Jason Taylor recently said he couldn't see himself playing for the Jets for the same reasons.

Besides retiring a Packer, there's no other reason for Favre to ask for his release other than to keep his options open. Options lead to inquisitiveness. Inquisitiveness leads to interest. Interest leads to action.

In my opinion, Favre will return to the NFL and quarterback the Vikings next season.

He picks his words well, certainly does not slam the door on any possible return.
He could teach Bill Clinton a thing or two about parsing words.

the farve to the vikes talk was back on the radio up here today. They made it sound like all Bevell had to do was make the call and he'd be up here.

This would be a really good way to get rid of Childress, a la Ray Rhodes.
Favre is sort of like the Pepe le Pew of players - convinced that his presence is not only welcomed but sought after and unaware of the stench he leaves in his wake. Childress had better watch his back and make sure a white stripe doesn't suddenly appear there.

Agent: Favre has no plans to un-retire

By Chris Mortensen

Brett Favre's agent Bus Cook reaffirmed Wednesday that the veteran quarterback has no plans to end his retirement now that the New York Jets have released him.

"He's retired, he doesn't have any desire to come back, and that's the way it is with Brett," said Cook. "He's mowing his grass. He's working on his farm. He enjoys that stuff."

Cook said he originally asked the Jets to release Favre after the season as just "the order of business. Brett wants to retire as a Packer and that's just part of it."

Favre could not be reached for comment. As Cook cracked, "He can't hear that phone on his tractor, anyway."

if that's the case, why ask for and receive your release from the Jets? Maybe there's some reason for it but if I'm Favre or his agent what do I care if the Jets hold my rights for another year.

I have no idea what Favre is planning and won't speculate, but there are many conceivable reasons why he might want to be released from his contract after it is known that he won't play again. The contract probably subjects him to various obligations and restrictions that he might want to be relieved of (such as drug testing, union membership and probably various prohibitions on certain activities or business opportunities).

Sure thing, Deanna. :goodposting:

He's a first ballot HoFer, but at this rate, he might enter in the year 2032. At this point, it is beyond ridiculous why he's even in the news now. He's retired. He needs to STAY retired. That, or sign a one-day deal with the Pack and retire for good.

Why ESPN has to dedicate 5+ minutes, and has it as a lead story on NFL Live today, is beyond me... :goodposting:

Seems to me the answer was given by Cook above. To retire a Packer he has to be released first so he can sign a 1-day deal.

He did send in his retirement papers which he didn't do last season. If he goes to the Vikings Woodson and Harris will be :sadbanana: :excited:

Well... no. Maybe. I don't know. I don't believe myself half the time. And I NEVER believe a woman. But the question above wasn't whether he's to be believed, the question was "why ask for and receive your release... what do I care if the Jets hold my rights for another year" and that is the reason given, and a plausible one.

Can't believe anything the Favre camp says, especially Bus Cook. From the Packer blog at JSOnline:
And in the interest of context and disclosure, Cook said the following a year ago this month to Los Angeles Times reporter Sam Farmer in his story that stated Cook was quietly gauging potential trade interest in a then-retired Favre:

"He's retired, period, point blank."

Cook had this to say to Peter King of SI.com at the time about the report:

"It is absolutely false. Absolutely false, and you can quote me on that."

Favre also talked to King about the report:

"That's the last thing I'm thinking about. I have no idea where that came from, but it certainly didn't come from me. I'm happy about my decision and I haven't once said, 'I wonder if I made the wrong decision.' I know it's the right one.''

"It's crazy to me that I'm the guy they're all talking about, and the story is out there everywhere, and I have nothing to do with it. It's not something I'm thinking about. It's kind of funny. Even when I'm retired, they won't let me stay retired.''

After months of speculation, Favre asked for his release from the Packers on July 11.

Plane Flies From Minneapolis To Hattiesburg, And Back Again

Posted by Mike Florio on April 29, 2009, 10:59 p.m.

It probably means nothing.

But, let’s face it, Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport is hardly a major hub of transportation.

Only five flights arrived there today, and only six departed.

One of the arrivals came from Minneapolis, and one of the departures headed back there.

The plane from Minneapolis arrived at 9:11 a.m. local time, and left at 4:14 p.m. local time.

It probably has nothing to do with one of the more famous residents of Hattiesburg. After all, he’s retired from playing football, and he has no intention of coming back.

Favre said so himself. “It’s all rumor. [There’s] no reason for it.”

Oh, wait. That was last year, when Favre shot down in early July talk that he wanted to come back.

Since he was telling the truth then, he’s surely telling the truth now.

This would be a really good way to get rid of Childress, a la Ray Rhodes.

 :lmao: :lmao: :goodposting:

wouldn't surprise me if the injured bicep was nothing more than a ruse or a stunt..did it really need surgery and did an MRI

prove or show anything?

the old 'make like your hurt and then retire, then, we'll ask for your release so we can get you out of NY and onto another roster for 2009'..

one question:

Does this mean that John Madden will un-retire as well?!

When has Favre blamed his failures on something or someone besides himself? He wasn't making the throws he usually made. He was hurt.

Brett Fave is very close to being an afterthought for me. If he gets anywhere near wearing purple, it will be like he never existed as a Packer for me. I"m serious. I'm done with this garbage.

He hasn't gotten bi ceps surgery. My bet is he won't because he hates surgery. He could be throwing even more picks after Clay Matthews hits him a few times.

Bring it Brett.

He looked like an older version of the brett favre I knew.If you are injured to the point it hurts your teams you don't play and you don't make excuses after you suck.

Im not going anywhere near Favre watch other than to say, injury or not, I don't think he has much left and I don't see how any team would want the distraction without a big enough payoff.

And I don't think he has enough to take Minny or any other team to the Super Bowl anymore.
