What the heck is a "football-playing Jesse?" Packers GM Ted Thompson calls Calhoun that in the article. Never heard that phrase before in my life... is that some sort of Wisconsin saying?

What means this?My bet is McCarthy won't last long. He wasn't very good with the Saints. He definitely wasn't standout with the niners- granted he didn't have the tools. I don't think he has it to be the HC. Favre and him could work well together, they have history.
As far as V Davis. So glad niners scooped that guy up. Possibly the best player to team out of the first round. He's a savage and teams are going to have a very tough time covering.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Ok, what do you know that Ted Thompson doesn't? Especially since they have concluded exactly one mini-camp and no games.TIAMy bet is McCarthy won't last long. He wasn't very good with the Saints. You have to be kidding me? Thompson did everything right in this draf. Drafting Calhoun when your O line STINKS, would not have been smart. Feel good story for a kid form Wisconsin, sure, but not smart. Taking OL help, as much as you can get, is smart.Another faulk-up by Thompson not being able to get Calhoun.
Whose the next GM and Coach and QB of the Pack going to be once the current regime is finally ousted?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Nothing misleading about it. Davis said he didn't want to be drafted by the Packers. That's a slight. And Thompson is quoted in the article as saying he liked Calhoun a lot. And that's all the headline says -- they really wanted him, which is true. They did. They liked Spitz more but that doesn't change Thompson's quote about Calhoun and how he wanted to get him. That is one misleading title. How again did Vernon Davis slight Green Bay? Big f'n deal. If Green Bay drafts him, a feel good report probably comes out that he was so happy that Green Bay took him. It's all BS at this point.
Also, Spits was the guy they wanted. If they wanted Calhoun, the could've had him.

I've never heard of it before, but this suggests it might indeed be a Texas saying:I am from Texas, and I have never heard it. Nguyen is what Slocum calls one "football-playing Jesse." To those in New Jersey or Los Angeles, that would mean the 213-pounder from Rockport-Fulton can play some ball.

Everyone? Walker and now Davis saying this after the draft?"It's a pleasure to be here," Davis told reporters at a news conference the next day at 49ers headquarters. "I've always wanted to come here. I was sitting at the table yesterday and Green Bay was up and I was telling my agent, 'I hope Green Bay doesn't take me. I definitely don't want to go there.'
HAHA. Rather go to the 49ers than the lowly Packers, seems everyone wants to either stay away or get out of Green Bay. Too funny.![]()

Yup...must all be Thompson's mistakes...Favre fiasco...a player contemplating retirement.Davis would've claimed to have been very happy to be with the Packers had they picked him.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Are you kidding me?The situation here is that a player is basically saying; "I'd rather be drafted LOWER than goto a sorry-#### team where even though I would've been drafted higher and gotten more gauranteed money, I didn't want to go".

Oh, and if I were so inclined to count down Thompson's mistakes over the last 2 years:
1. Walker Fiasco
2. Favre Fiasco
3. Aaron Rodgers?![]()

and Hawk:Vernon Davis. This tight end is faster than Holmes and most other wide receivers. He has the tools to be rookie-of-the-year and heaven knows the San Francisco 49ers will use him from day one.
But think about it. You’re the opposing defensive coordinator. You look at the 49ers and see Antonio Bryant at one wide receiver spot and Arnaz Battle on the other side. Or maybe it’s Bryan Gilmore. You look in the backfield and see Frank Gore. Then you see Davis and scratch your head.
Who are you going to double? Are you going to let a rookie tight end beat you when nobody else on the team can?
No wonder Davis cried at the announcement. This is the 32d-ranked offense, balanced nicely by the 32d-ranked defense. Jerry Rice couldn’t make a difference by himself. Check back in five years.
A.J. Hawk
As much grief as the 4-12 Packers got and deserved, they had the eighth-ranked defense, No. 1 in pass defense. They just didn’t have many playmakers.
Hawk is a can’t-miss playmaker who will fit into the defense faster than Brian Urlacher fit in Chicago.
Unlike Urlacher, who came into the league as a safety and had to feel his way into the middle linebacker position after the Bears started him at strong linebacker, Hawk is a born and bred outside linebacker who led Ohio State in tackles for three years in a row. Ohio State was the team that had all three starting linebackers drafted among the first 76 players, two in the first 18.
Being that I'm from Texas, I feel I may be able to shed some light on this saying. I think it's actually British and usually used as " You Big Jesse".I believe it means a girlie man or maybe even a queer. Might be more like calling a man a big baby. Not 100%. But I have heard it before. What the heck is a "football-playing Jesse?" Packers GM Ted Thompson calls Calhoun that in the article. Never heard that phrase before in my life... is that some sort of Wisconsin saying?

This thread was useful in ONE way, knowing to doubt and think twice about every analysis put forth by Iron_Far.The guy didn't pull an Eli and say he wouldn't play there, "Don't draft me!" He didn't say anything when he got interviewed because unlike you, he wasn't gonna say something stupid and burn his bridges. GEE, look at all that money he gave up dropping ONE WHOLE spot. But he really showed them by saying AFTER the FACT that he was "thrilled" where he ended up and didn't go to Green Bay.Davis would've claimed to have been very happy to be with the Packers had they picked him.

I can confirm that "Big Jesse" is a term of abuse in England. But I don't think Thompson used it in that sense here.football-playing Jesse
Maybe Thompson & Calhoun have a Brokeback Backfield thing goin' and Thompson was saying that he wished queer Calhoun was in another division because he can't quit him?"We liked Brian Calhoun a lot," Thompson said. "I especially liked him a lot. I think he's an outstanding football player. Everybody's talking about his height. This guy is a football-playing Jesse. Dude. Well put.You said exactly what all the Pack faithful have been thinking but are scared to say for fear of being labeld "mindless homers". And youre a Donkey fan IIRC.LOL, MitYH.
GB had a great draft, IMO. The only pick I questioned was Spitz so high. I'm worried he might be a little soft to play in the bigs - we'll see. The 2 LBs were outstanding picks & immediately upgrades the Packer LB corps well above last year. Jennings, if he doesn't start, will be a significant contributor in the passing game. Colledge is the real deal and will be better than most think, probably starting at OG in his first year. Rodgers & Blackmon were spaghetti-against-the-wall picks at WR to help with returns and give some young depth at a depleted position. Ingle fits GB very well and will get at least 2 years to learn unless Rodger falls on his face completely. The rest of the players are solid depth on the O-line, D-line, & secondary.
They moved in the draft adeptly to stock pile picks while not falling too far. They handled the Walker situation as best they could given that Walker was going to do everything in his power to screw over GB. Not sure what the fuss about Favre was - I thought he ws coming back all the time. People knocking Aaron Rodgers are probably the same people who raked Brees when he wasn't a stud-in-a-second QB (very, very few QBs in the history of the NFL are, and Rodgers is learning a ton on the sidelines while being able to practice at NFL speed for a couple of years - ideal situation for a young QB).
As far as last year's team, well, I wonder how many teams could start their 4th WR & 5th RB for any period of time & rack up any appreciable number of Ws. That Gado was their leading rusher & Chatman was their 2nd leading receiver and that GB lost 8 of those 13 games by 7 pts or less is a tribute to the Packers of last season & a warning for all other teams they play this coming season.
Could this be the worst bump ever? It's the worst one I've ever seen. This thread is pretty useless right now.Maybe Thompson & Calhoun have a Brokeback Backfield thing goin' and Thompson was saying that he wished queer Calhoun was in another division because he can't quit him?"We liked Brian Calhoun a lot," Thompson said.
