Packers win recruiting battle for DT PickettBy John Clayton

In perhaps the most competitive negotiation Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers beat out the Bills and the Rams for Rams defensive tackle Ryan Pickett.

Terms of the agreement weren't available. Pickett was visiting the Bills but had stayed in touch with the Rams, hoping to get an offer that would bring him back. The Packers talked Pickett into his first visit over the weekend and there was some thought he might not have totally liked his visit.

Those thoughts were proved wrong when the Packers stepped up and gave him a deal. Pickett will replace Grady Jackson as the run-stopping defensive tackle in the team's 4-3 scheme.

Pickett's signing along with the addition of safety Marquand Manuel and re-signings of halfback Ahman Green and defensive end Aaron Kampman are being used as recruiting tools to help prevent Brett Favre from retiring.

Favre is watching the Packers' free-agent acquisitions to see what kind of team they will have. If he likes what he sees, he is expected to postpone thoughts of retiring for another year.

Finally! A visible step in the right direction! Now it's time to kick back and watch management work. I wonder about the terms of the deal.

I agree. Very happy to see a signing like this. I do worry some that he had his most productive year in a contract year though. Although the Rams were trying to resign him as well. Good solid signing. He'll help. I'd also like to see Grady signed back to help with a rotation.

Has anyone else heard this supposed NFL Network report that the Packers have offered Ty Law a contract? iT was mentioned in one of the three thousand Redskin posts, but I haven't seen a link...

Is this true?

Pickett is a good player.....when he wants to be. Last year, he really made a big improvement in his dedication and the results showed.

He'll be a force for the Pack for years. I'll really miss him as I thought he would complement LaRoi Glover very well.

Trying to make Farve happy???????
That will be the talk...but they had Pickett in before the talk of the Favre will come back if they do something stuff started.also resigned Barry, Peterson, Gardner....

Packers need that 5 pick for A.J Hawk. 3 buckeyes on defense can't go wrong!

What I would really like to see is Favre Owens connection for a year. Bring in T.O for a one year incentive contract like K.C is offering and turn Favre and Owens lose! Send FAVRE out a winner!

I sure hope Hawk ends up with GB. Hawk would love to play for the Packers and it would be a great fit!

IMO, the most safe/can't go wrong pick for Green Bay at #5.
