Feds approve powdered alcohol; Palcohol available later this year

The U.S. government has approved a brand of powdered alcohol that can be mixed into a drink or sprinkled over food.

Palcohol will be available later this year, The Telegraph reported.

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved seven new version of Palcohol this week, including Margarita and Cosmopolitan flavors.

The company briefly touted its product online as a solution to the rising price of liquid alcohol, Lehrman Beverage Law reported.

Whats worse than going to a concert, sporting event, etc. and having to pay $10, $15, $20 for a mixed drink with tax and tip. Are you kidding me?! A statement on the company initially read. Take Palcohol into the venue and enjoy a mixed drink for a fraction of the cost.

Shortly after the announcement by federal government, the Palcohol website was changed. It now reads, in part: We were caught off guard with the release of some of our labels by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). As a result, people visited this website that we thought was under the radar because we had not made a formal announcement of Palcohol. Clearly, this site isnt finished. More information will be forthcoming.

Sure, sounds like it could save some money at venues, but geez this seems like a really bad idea in terms of drinking and driving.

So I can add powdered alcohol to liquid alcohol and get even more drunk a lot quicker? This ought to go over well.

11. Can I snort it? We have seen comments about goofballs wanting to snort it. Don't do it! It is not a responsible or smart way to use the product. To take precautions against this action, we've added volume to the powder so it would take more than a half of a cup of powder to get the equivalent of one drink up your nose. You would feel a lot of pain for very little gain. Just use it the right way.

I can't imagine how painful it would be to snort a half cup of powder all at once.

Well, I did go to high school in the 80s, so I can imagine. Just not at my age.

Oh wow, so it hurts too! :excited:

While on one hand it seems awesome and alot of fun, I am sure there are people who will not use this responsibly and ruin it for the lot of us. First idea that comes to mind, folks who have been drinking all day making double and triple volume "beers" from a soda/ice water inside the stadium for an NFL game regardless of being 86'ed or not at the beer concession stands. Sure you can do that now if you get someone to sneak in a flask, but this is just making it really, really easy to conceal.

Sounds like a "stock up before it's taken away" situation a la 4Loko.

That reminds me of another way people will use it.

So their selling point is that you could sneak a gallon sized bag of a mystery white powdery substance into a sporting event and add it to a trash can sized amount of liquid to give you the equivalent of a couple of beers?

Worldwide, flask makers are quivering in their boots.

:lmao:

seems like it could be potentially dangerous

I imagine we'll be hearing about a hazing incident/fatality involving this in the near future...

I also imagine it will easy to overserve...

Bad possibilities aside, is the future vision here "K-cups for booze?" Because, if we could do that right, it would be pretty awesome. Can't see alcohol makers/importers being too happy about this though. Interesting concept.

So according to their package, 100 ml of the stuff is equivalent to 1 mixed drink. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...

Not interested. I know I am in the minority but I drink good beer and wine more for the taste than the buzz.

how is this suppose to be convenient.. half a cup of powder for 1 beer? how do they expect one to sneak this into a venue

OUTRAGE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!

A 1-quart ziploc would contain 8 drinks. That seems reasonable.

Oh, it's going to cause some confusion.

A friggin half a cup of powder makes a single drink? So stupid.

I went from very excited to completely disappointed in less than a minute. Now I know how it feels for the women I've been with.

College students everywhere rejoice! This would've been an incredible development when I was in college, since my school was militant about sneaking alcohol into dorms.

Guys, I think that blurb was saying it would take snorting a half cup to get the equivalent feeling of one drink. That doesn't rule out the possibility that it takes much less than half a cup, added to liquid, to give you the equivalent of one drink when used the RIGHT way, aka when drunk.

That's what I thought at first too but let's think about this logically: why would it the more of a product that hits your bloodstream to achieve the effect of a product that's being diluted with water?

I think they just threw that out there as a hail mary and hoping people don't actually snort it.

kinda shocked the TTB approved this. should be interesting to see how the A.B.C. [for example] tries to reconcile this within their prevue.

Cut it with coke. Problem solved.

Meh. I'll stick to whiskey and cocaine.

I really don't see this leading to the sort of binge drinking issues that people might assume. It doesn't sound very convenient and no doubt it taste like garbage.

Even for stadiums, airplane bottles are still probably just as convenient and you can get decent tasting versions of those.

Yeah a slim flask with some high proof bourbon is probably more convenient.
