Palmer update (1 Viewer)

Here is the article from ESPN.com

I went to Bengals camp the other day and Plamer wasn't even in uniform. He was just tossing the ball around for about 15 minutes behind one end zone.

Despite all of the optimistic rhetoric, and the fact Carson Palmer has suffered no significant setbacks in his rehabilitation from a severe right knee injury, there are no guarantees yet that he will be in the lineup when the Cincinnati Bengals open the regular season at Kansas City on Sept. 10.

The odds still favor Palmer but, as the Bengals prepare to begin the second week of training camp, no one seems capable yet of quantifying the possibilities.

Because, frankly, no one knows.

"I'm still not completely healthy," Palmer allowed after the team's Friday night camp scrimmage. "I'm still not back as far as timing and rhythm are concerned. The more reps I get, the better I feel. I need to be more athletic in the pocket and get back to the technique I've always had an always relied on. It will take time, but I'll get there."

One of the league's fastest emerging stars -- and a most valuable player candidate in 2005 when he finished second to Peyton Manning of Indianapolis in the league passing derby and registered an impresive 101.1 efficiency rating, while leading the NFL with 32 touchdown passes - Palmer suffered two torn ligaments in his left knee and a dislocated kneecap in a Jan. 8 playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the ensuing seven months, the grueling rehabilitative pace set by the 2002 Heisman Trophy winner and top overall selection in the '03 draft has been documented in magazine feature articles. There have been suggestions that Palmer, 26, is remarkably ahead of schedule in recovering from the kind of injury which can take 9-12 months to rehabilitate. And the widespread hints that he would be able to start in the regular-season opener have been so broad that his readiness for the meeting with the Chiefs, which would come on the eight-month anniversary of the surgery to repair his knee, has been taken for granted in some quarters.

Notable, however, is that neither Palmer nor coach Marvin Lewis have issued any public pronouncements about the opening game. Privately, the Bengals' brass is cautiously optimistic about Palmer's chances for being ready to go from the outset of the season, but caution is clearly the operative mindset.

Said Palmer last week: "It's unrealistic to say that I'm going to start against the Chiefs. It's realistic to say that I might start against the Chiefs. That's my goal. We'll just see how it works out."

The reality might come into better focus this week. Cincinnati coaches spent part of this weekend closely reviewing the status of Palmer's rehabilitation in the first week of training camp and might be prepared to ramp up his workload. Unlike the last two summers, when Palmer logged 80-90 percent of the snaps during training camp, he has taken only about 40 percent so far this year.

Palmer participated in the Friday scrimmage, completing four of nine passes for 59 yards, and conceding that he struggled at times to knock off some of the rust that developed in the spring, when he wasn't on the field as much as he had been in the past. The former Southern California star, who sported a brace on his left knee in the scrimmage, did not take part in the team's annual training camp "Mock Game" on Saturday.

In that session, journeyman Anthony Wright, signed as an unrestricted free agent in the spring, threw for nearly 300 yards and took a huge step toward winning the primary backup job and the right to start in the regular-season opener if Palmer isn't ready. Of course, Palmer still has five weeks to convince himself and the Cincinnati organization that he is fully recovered and ready to resume his role as the starter.

But the more practical evaluation period, in terms of playing time in the preseason, likely will be much more compressed. There is virtually no chance that Palmer will play in the Aug. 13 preseason opener against Washington. In fact, it's more likely that Palmer will not get on the field until Aug. 28, the third preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.

"I'm going to do whatever I get cleared to do," Palmer said. "If the doctors think I need more [snaps] and give me more [snaps], I'll do it. If they want me to back off and they say I need more rest, I'll do it. I'm just going to do what they say."

Just my opinion, but I don't think he plays until after CIN's bye week.
That has always been my opinion. And frankley if I were a Cincy fan, that is what I would hope for. I mean the guy is taking it very slow right now and proclaims he is not completely healthy, can you see him playing in 35 days for the opener?

But what was there that even suggested he won't be in the opener? Clearly it's just speculation. Granted he's coming off injury and that alone makes it a question. But there is nothing I read that changes his goal or the optimism that he will likely start game 1. No new info that I read. In fact it reinforces the idea that he will be the starter.

i read that as a suggestion that he won't be in the opener

So when he said, and has all along, that it's his goal, in spite of what everyone has felt all along, that it's unrealistic, you feel that this is now something new? It's always been his goal. It's always been unreal that he would make it. But nothing has changed and that's my point. There is nothing new here.

you are right, I doubted his ability to come back so soon after his injury, and Palmer himself is confirming that he isn't ready yet . . . People, it's your 4th round pick, do with it what you will . . . and remember it's also your 2nd round pick (CJ) and your 5th round pick (TJH) . . .

good luck . . .

Seems to me like Carson meant to say "it's unrealistic to say I'm definitely going to start week 1" and the reporter ran with it. Like was discussed in a few threads, he, Daunte, Deuce, Walker etc are going to go thru some knee swelling. It's a bummer when you're all excited it's feeling so well. The swelling will go down and his knee will become more normal. I wouldn't be surprised if that created a seed of doubt in his mind.I also wouldn't be surprised if "Carson will definitely play in week 1" put a screeching halt to how hard Wright and the others are trying to impress.

Disclaimer: Proud owner of CP in both early draft leagues, where I stole him in the 4th and 5th rounds (which is 3 and 4 rounds after Peyton, a QB that had less FF points than Palmer last year), one of which is a dynasty format  :)

Bengals QB Palmer gets 80 percent of practice snaps

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The comeback of Carson Palmer took another step forward this morning, when the fourth-year quarterback took 80 percent of the practice snaps.

The increase came at Palmer's request and after doctors and medical staff were consulted to see if his surgically reconstructed knee could handle the workload -- which is now doubled compared to the 40 percent of snaps Palmer was taking during the first week of camp. "We increased Carson's snaps," coach Marvin Lewis said. Said offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski, "That's a good sign."

Palmer said his left knee feels better and stronger each day, though it might not show. Palmer excited a surprisingly large crowd this morning when he rolled out and scrambled 15 yards down the far sideline when his receivers were covered. "Even when I open it up it's not real fast," Palmer said.

Asked if he would start Sept. 10 in the opener at Kansas City, Palmer said, "That's the long-term goal. Now it's about practicing every day." Palmer will not practice tonight, keeping with his routine of going once a day. He will, however, be working out on his strength and overall conditioning. Lewis was evasive when asked if Anthony Wright had won the No. 2 quarterback job over Doug Johnson. "Not for you," Lewis said when asked if he had made his decision. Wright took the live snaps in practice that Palmer did not. Lewis did Palmer would not play in the preseason opener Sunday night against Washington at Paul Brown Stadium. Wright is expected to start, based on practice workload and the value of his contract compared to Johnson's.

You didn't steal anything . . . obviously, there is a reason why he went in the 4th or 5th . . . we have yet to see if the knee affects his game . . . check back in six weeks . . .

Guy at USAToday is guessing 2 preseason games out of him. All in all it's just alot of reporters guessing

I bet he starts openr and goes off for 4 Tds
I'll take that bet. Even money?
I have had a similar injury to what Palmer had. I can tell you this type of injury lingers for a long time. If Palmer is hit the wrong way just once he is done for the season.I wouldn't touch him until the mid to late rounds. He is too much of a health risk. And there are too many good options at QB to take such an injury risk.

Did you have Palmer's doctor do your surgery and have the same rehab trainers as him....................NOT!! These guys are in a different postion than you and I and are treated as such. I have had should surgery twice and both times it didn't recover fully. Why you ask? I suppose I didn't have the same doctors doing the surgery as say a Ben Sheets or Cris Carpenter would have had. Get my point!!

I may not have had his doctor. But, I also didn't have 350 pound linebackers chasing me around either.Trust me,this injury is a serious one.
