Panther camp (1 Viewer)

This wasn't typed by me, but by some guy named Justin on a Panther mailing list I subscribe too, and I forward on any other reports he sends out. Still thought people might be interested...

Well I didn't expect to be attending any of training camp this year, but things fell into place and I found myself in the general area of upstate SC on the opening night of camp, so decided to go check it out.

As you might expect, the biggest cheers were when Cam Newton walked out on the field and then during drills he hit Armanti Edwards (yes him) with a nice deep pass that Edwards had to adjust for and made a great catch with coverage.

Cam looked as you would expect a rookie 1st rounder to look. He made several nice throws, looks like a big NFL QB, has a presence about him and then had an occassional mistake here and there. He only took off running on one play, but his pocket presence and movement make Clausen look like the scared little rabbit surrounded by wolves that he was last year. When the team went to 11 on 11 and there were people flying around, Clausen just gets caught up in the mass of bodies around him, gets happy feet and looks totally out of place. Cam towers above them all, keeps his eyes down the field, moves fluidly in the pocket and either makes a throw, or in the one instance, makes a move and takes off and is gone before you know it.

Current QB depth chart...

Jimmy Clausen #2

Cam Netwon #1

Tony Pike #16

I guess I forgot or didn't know that Matt Moore wasn't going to be here and is now with Miami.

Everyone, myself included, that has begged for TE help since the days of Wesley Walls....welcome to TE heaven. Here is the current list of TE's on the roster...

Jeremy Shockey #80

Greg Olsen #88

Gary Barnidge #82

Ben Hartsock #84

Greg Smith #85

Richard Brockel #47

There is some new rule in the CBA that restricted many players from not practicing last night. Among them (and perhaps a few injured, not sure) were Olsen, Kalil, Beason, Thomas Davis, Charles Johnson, DeAngelo Williams, Olindo Mare, Charley Martin, Chris Gamble, David Clowney and James Anderson I think.

Nice to see Otah back in at RT. That moved Geoff Schwartz in to RG with 1st team.

The RB's are just as stout as they have been

DeAngelo Williams #34

Jonathon Stewart #28

Mike Goodson #33

Tyrell Sutton #22

Josh Vaughn #32

FB's

Tony Fiammetta #42

Rashawn Jackson #38

WR core has Steve Smith and David Gettis as the starters and Brandon LaFell coming in as the 3rd receiver. Biggest surprise of the night was that Armanti Edwards was actually catching everything thrown his way. I know its just one night of practice, but it was nice to see that from him.

Steve Smith #89

David Gettis #12

Brandon LaFell #11

David Clowney #87

Armanti Edwards #10

Trent Guy #19

Wallace Wright #15

Charley Martin #83

Jamorris Warren #18

Kealoha Pilares #81

Darvin Adams #86

I will be honest, didn't watch the defense hardly at all except in 11 on 11 drills where the biggest thing I noticed was there was almost always a LB blitzing. Not sure if they were working on blitz pickups or if this is a sign of what to expect from our defense.

If anyone has a question just let me know and maybe it will jog my memory of something else that was seen.

I thought that's a big part of why they drafted him--his general athleticism. Don't think anything other than emergency QB was ever in the plans. Like what he says about Cam Newton's presence in the pocket.

Until he catches a ball over the middle I am not holding my breath. The dude looked scared to be on the field last year.

Olsen is their best TE. He was wasted in Martz's system the last 2 years.

Imo, Shockey is done(I hope I'm wrong).

this is what ron rivera does, i think. he's all about pressuring the QB. he had a tremendous front four to work with in Chicago. it would seem that he sees the strength of the defense of the LB.
