Panthers Fire Henning (1 Viewer)

Bad move in my opinion. Will elaborate more after WSLs are over.
How can you say this is a bad move? I counted at least three games where he called plays that lost them the game. The most notable one was the Minnisota game where they tried that trick play on the KO return. Then against Cinci who was one of the worse teams in the NFL against the run the whole year, in a close game, RAN THE BALL THREEE TIMES in the second half? And..Carolina had the 24th overall offense in 2006, WAY worse than 2004 AND 2005?IMO, this is a decision that needed to be made.

I heard they also fired the OL coach and the secondary coach. It was said before that Keyshawn would be back if they kept Dan Henning. Apparently he has an out in his contract, but it has to do something with going back to Dallas if TO moves out of Dallas. At least, that's what I recollect. Don't take it for gospel.

Interesting.

I'd also be inclined to say that John Fox had better watch his own back, with Bill Cowher lurking around Tobacco Road. If Burgher Bill gets the itch again, the Dixie Kitties might be a really good fit for him, with Kris Jenkins and Julius Peppers anchoring the defense.

Holy ####! Dumb move Carolina...dumb. Henning = One of Parcells guys. :sadbanana:
Henning is a very friendly guy in NFL circles. For example he was friends with Fox and I don't think he ever coached with him before the Panthers. Anyone that's been associated with the Giants probably knows him well. He was a Falcons and Chargers HC so he probably knows people there too. Very friendly guy.If I'm not mistaken, it's possible each have an openning at OC.Mora gone, new coach can always= new OC.Hufnagel re-signed and I still haven't seen them definitively name Gilbride OC for 2007, just the last game or two in 06.Cameron is a "hot" coaching candidate. Were Henning, Coughlin, Marty, and BP were on the same Giants staff? early 80's late 70s?

imo, it was 2 seasons to late. I echo the sentiment from above that most of his playcalls were baffling and some downright wrong. I'm not disappointed. looking forward to who they will get.

great move by the Panthers. Play calling was VERY weak this year. And yes, there is no excuse for NOT getting your star player (Smith) involved in EVERY game. Smith, Delhomme, and Williams dynasty owners should all be happy about this move.

Doesn't Henning have long history o the O's being boring and quite predictable? I think Wayne Fontes fired him once, which really isn't a knock against Henning

Bad move in my opinion.
QB play is not his fault but....whatever, that's kinda how it works in the NFL blame game.
The offensive playcalling was way worse than Jake's ups and downs this year.
If a QB isn't doing well but they have two very good backs(one being an up N coming rook) you think they should pass more?I understand the need to get it to Smith as he's a playmaker but if whether the QB will get it there is a question, that's the problem IMO.

Um yeah, the dude called 9 passes one game. 9 ####### passes!! be gone Dan, steve smith owners rejoice everywhere.
Didn't the Panthers win that game? :goodposting:
:lmao:
I had to go look it up.The Panthers won the game at Atlanta 10-3

Weinke was 4 of 7 with a TD

Steve Smith did not have a reception in the game.

The Panthers ran the ball 52 times

I think the biggest problem with Henning's offenses was the lack of a consistent running game. He got one good year out of Stephen Davis but has not had a 1000 yard rusher since. Even though they got to the NFC Championship last year, they had one of the worst rushing averages in the league. They did better this year but often the rushing game would seem to disappear in the second half. I like Henning and I think he is a good coach but at the same time I think this offense needs someone who can get some more production out of the running game.

Wonder what that means to Foster and Williams...

I suppose we'll only know when his replacement is hired.

They were also 7 of 8 converting 3rd downs without a QB taking the snap. This was actually Hennings finest game of the year.

I've liked Henning and his offenses throughout his career. If the Panthers want to go in another direction that's fine, but an NFL team is going to be getting a great coordinator. Actually, come to think of it, it would be no surprise to see Coughlin reach out to Henning and bring him aboard as OC for the NYG.

I believe that Ken Whisenhunt and Henning are long-time friends. Wouldn't be suprised to see Henning end up in Arizona as their OC.

The knock on Henning was predictability. When the average fan in the stands can usually predict the next play, especially on third and long, you know the multi-million dollar defensive guys on the other sideline can too. He's a nice guy and I hope he finds a great new job, but I'm looking forward to some surprises on offense in Charlotte next season.

Ding ding! I'm excited to see who they bring in. Chances are it will be a grind it out, smash-mouth O-Coord. that fits the needs of Fox's offensive running style. Personally, I'd like to see the Panthers offense be a juggernaut that is anchored by an attacking running game that fuels the passing game, i.e Denver's offense. The Panthers have the personnel to do just that. That's what I'm hoping for. As for Henning, maybe he will go back to Washington to join Gibbs? He has a long list of current and former coaches that could be interested in him.

Dan Henning was on Joe Gibbs' staff in the early 80s. His son went to my high school and was a qb. I doubt htere is room for him on Gibbs staff though. If this happened last year, I could see Henning joining the Redskins, but not with Saunders here.

If I'm not mistaken, it's possible each have an openning at OC.

Mora gone, new coach can always= new OC.

Hufnagel re-signed and I still haven't seen them definitively name Gilbride OC for 2007, just the last game or two in 06.

Cameron is a "hot" coaching candidate.

Were Henning, Coughlin, Marty, and BP were on the same Giants staff? early 80's late 70s?
Henning coached with Parcells back at Florida State in the early 70's and again as an assistant (QB coach) when Parcells was the HC with the Jets...Henning was also the OC with the Jets under Parcells guy Al Groh. Parcells and Marty have not been on the same staff to my knowledge...Parcells and Coughlin is well documented with the Giants.Jerry Jones would never let this happen, but I would love to see Parcells come back with Henning as the OC in Pittsburgh.
I'd have to do more googling. I thought they were at one time. Quick search found this mention``We do some tackling drills, but really, Marty and I had that conversation with Bill [Parcells]. We all kind of said the same thing, `Those drills are great. We used to do them.' None of us do them anymore."

but it's hardly conclusive

Parcells first came to the Giants in 1979 as the DC for Ray Perkins...Schotty was the DC for the Giants in 1977 under John McVay and then Schotty moved on to Detroit for the 1978-79 seasons as their LB coach...after this he joined Cleveland as their DC and DB coach under Sam Rutigliano until 1984, when he replaced Sam as HC. That article is just old school coaches talking old school...
I just found it too.BB and Parcells joined the Giants in 79, Marty was from 74-77.

I knew that article was "just that" but as I said, it was the first thing that came up googling. I've seen lots of articles/interviews/radio whatever about those guys being close, I knew they were all Giants assistants. I just assumed they were on the same staff at one time.

Thanks for the info.

Still pretty sure if there's an openning those teams will consider their friend, Henning.

I'll agree that Henning wasn't entirely responsible for all of the Panther's offensive woes this year, he never seemed to be able to adjust the gameplan effectively. When you are only averaging about 2 yards per carry like in some of the games this year, do you really think a draw play on 3rd & 7 is going to do the trick? Regardless, Henning had worn out his welcome in Carolina and keeping would probably only have added to the dissent in the fan base, so this move was likely for the best. Just my .02 cents.

It is what it is said:
And I agree with you, Henning still has alot of connections...but none closer than Parcells. They are very tight.
He says he has been talking with Parcells and 'something is in the works' according to a secondhand source that heard him on Sirius. The other news is that the Panthers interviewed Ken Zampese, QB coach for Cinci to fill their OC spot. I really like this interview and I hope they hire him. I don't know much about his offensive philosophy, but he has done a good job with the QB's for the Bengals and the Panthers could use a fresh pair of eyes.

Is that Ernie's son?

The Panthers' problem is primarily the OL. Losing Wharton hurt them last year.

Play calling looks a lot better when people get blocked.

 Very good info on both Henning and Zampese...Henning is just the kind of move that would bring Parcells back for another year in Dallas. Henning can step right in for the now departed David Lee, and along with Chris Palmer, gives Charlie Tuna two of "his guys" to maintain his offense and keep young Romo in check. Which in turn helps to keep somebody else in check.

If this comes to fruition, I would also expect to see another Parcells guy come in on the D side. Too bad Al Groh is signed on thru 2010...he would be another very close friend of Parcells who goes back with him nearly a half a century ago ('68), as Henning does. Getting those guys who you pretty much came in with, like a Henning, could really rejuvinate Parcells...huge security and loyalty factor here.

If Pasqualoni gets promoted to DC in Zimmer's place, I wouldn't be surprised to see Parcells possibly reach out to a former player for his LB coach...Harry Carson (Fox G-men analyst) would be an interesting play here. Somebody who could really school the inside on the extra responsibilities they have with a free roaming Ware on the outside.

Would love to see Parcells come back for another round with some of "his guys" along with an increasing input on the draft and free agency...
I wouldn't be surprised if Pepper Johnson is interviewed. He was interviewed when Mangini became DC for the Pats.

Groh won't make it to 2010.

Sounds like the Panthers are very interested in Jeff Davidson. link

MOBILE, Ala. - The Carolina Panthers are in contract talks to make former Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Jeff Davidson their new offensive coordinator, according to league sources.

A deal could be finalized as soon as tonight.

Davidson apparently edged out Panthers quarterbacks coach Mike McKoy, who will remain on the staff.

Davidson will replace Dan Henning, who was fired after an 8-8 season.

I don't know much about him, but he seemed to do a good job as an offensive line/TE's coach when he was with New England. He was made OC half way through the season last year with the Browns, but they had a lot of problems. It's hard to judge his play-calling based on a situation like that. I guess he shares Fox's offensive philosophy if the Panthers are this interested in him.

Sounds like it's a done deal.

MOBILE, Ala. - The Carolina Panthers finalized a contract with new offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson on Tuesday night. Davidson was the offensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns the past two seasons. Prior to that, he was an assistant with New England as the Patriots won three Super Bowls. Davidson, 39, replaces Dan Henning, who was fired after an 8-8 season. The team also officially announced tight ends coach Dave Magazu will shift to offensive line coach.

:hifive: ####### great...the winning tradition of the Browns teamed up with the guiding force of the Panthers' stellar TEs. :goodposting: Wonder if we still have room for Shell or Kotite on staff.

I was hoping that Zampese would be hired, but I can live with this. As simey pointed out, it is really hard to judge him on his OC experience in Cleveland as he took over in the middle of the season. Any new OC is going to be somewhat of a mystery, so I am at least looking forward to how things change next year. I hope the Panthers can get a better running game going and maybe figure out that the TE is someone you can throw the ball too.

They've done this in Cleveland - Heiden/Shea while never top ten were often targeted on 3rd and in the red zone. Droughns has had a couple of good years as well

I think you missed his history with the Patriots. I would bet in time you'll like this signing. I wish the Pats could have got him back somehow.
